Tell me more about Ron DeSantis (1 Viewer)

I will be curious to see how he handles pressure. I don’t get much info about him but when I see clips he’s usually getting wound up from a question.
No doubt. He's a hot head which may play well to the MAGA crowd, but is/will be a turn-off for most.
From afar and someone who would very likely never vote for him I don’t see being a watered down version of Trump is the way to win.

For the love of God don’t let this be how he plays it

Needs some voice coaching. Very whiny.
Whiny and combative. Poor people skills. No charm, doesn't engage well. Fake looking smile in photo ops. Had a buff look, but now appearing chubby. Destroyed by Gillum in the 2018 debate. Trump might do the same in a 2024 GOP debate. These things shouldn't really matter much, but they do.

Otherwise, he checks a lot of boxes.
But does he wear a red hat?

He is both a Yale and Harvard graduate with honors I might add. He is no watered down version of Trump. I really don't get where you guys come up with that.

Does he sound or look anything like Trump here.

When I say that he reminds me of Trump, it's more the bullying/vindictive/victimhood side of things - nothing to do with his intelligence. Honestly, it makes me more nervous he is a front runner when he displays those tendencies and is more intelligent.

I've been to Pine Island many times glad to hear they are making progress there. One of my favorite places in Florids is right off of Pine Island. Cabbage Key haven't heard how they faired hopefully the hotel there wasnt destroyed.

The stupid culture war stuff. Very Trumpian.

Oh and this

"What the governor's done is pretty remarkable," Biden says of DeSantis' handling of the storm.

Karine diversity hire already trying to figure out how to walk that statement back.

How about here? or here? or here? or here? or here?
No,no,no,no,and no. Pretty good buddy maybe you should try for a job with CNN.

Trying to make a point using the hurricane. You do realize people are suffering. Maybe you don't because I'm sure you wouldn't do that would you?

Nice try though.
Huh? You said you don't understand why some of us think he's a watered down version of Trump, then link a flattering example of a hurricane presser. I provide five not so flattering examples to answer your original question and you accuse me of politicizing the hurricane? Not your best work, gb.

Hey I've seen all the unflattering videos of DeSantis. How could I not ? Media always trying to find something anything, sometimes manufactured to make him look bad. Like 60 minutes for example.

I will say the encounter with the students was not a good look , but far from Trumpian not even Trump lite. More along the lines of a guy who was fed up with the mask nonsense.

So my apologies if I came on a little strong . I try not to do that because it leads to nothing productive as far as conversations go.

Just a little touchy about hurricanes.

Cabbage Key
More expensive than Martha's Vineyard. Big $$$$, it's on my bucket.

ETA- The Pine Island bridge has been repaired enough to reopen. That's pretty amazing for 3 days of work! Go FL!
I've stayed at the Tarpon Lodge while passing through on Pine Island, it's amazing!

Tampa woman tied to flights

Reports allege it was Perla H. Huerta luring migrants onto Massachusetts-bound planes.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN ANTONIO — The mysterious woman who allegedly lured dozens of migrants onto Gov. Ron DeSantis’ flights to Martha’s Vineyard from San Antonio, Texas, has been identified by several media outlets as Perla H. Huerta, a former combat medic and U.S. Army counterintelligence agent living in Tampa.

The New York Times reported late Sunday that a Venezuelan migrant who was working with Huerta to recruit migrants confirmed her identity, and a migrant in San Antonio whom Huerta had unsuccessfully sought to sign up identified a photo of her.

CNN reported that a friend of Huerta’s confirmed her identity in a photo provided by a migrant. Pictures have been circulating of the woman — until now known simply as “Perla” — after she allegedly recruited many of the 48 Venezuelan migrants outside a city-operated shelter in downtown San Antonio and moved them to a La Quinta Inn before they were flown to the upscale Massachusetts island at the expense of Florida taxpayers last month.

The San Antonio Express-News, citing unnamed sources, reported Monday that the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, which includes San Antonio, considers Huerta, 43, a “person of interest” in its criminal investigation into the incident.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Johnny Garcia said in a statement Monday the office had not confirmed or identified any persons of interest in the ongoing investigation. Asked about Huerta, Garcia told the Express-News, “We are not publicly identifying anybody.”

The Associated Press tried numerous phone numbers and emails for potential matches for Perla H. Huerta or possible relatives, and got no answer or the lines were disconnected.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar has said he’s looking into whether the migrants were lied to or if the two flights last month broke any laws. Some migrants have said they were enticed with McDonald’s gift cards and promises of jobs and housing that never materialized.

U.S. Army spokesperson Madison Bonzo confirmed to the AP that a Perla H. Huerta left the military in August and served as a combat medic and worked in counterintelligence. She held the rank of master sergeant when she left the service and had deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and Djibouti.

DeSantis said he used contractors for the operation, but he has refused to release details or the contracts.

A Huerta was documented in public records several times, including under another last name, as living in a condominium near the south end of Bayshore Boulevard. She bought the condo in May 2019 for $335,000, according to Hillsborough property records. The address is also listed on her 2020 voter registration, when she signed up without listing a party affiliation.

Court records show that Huerta has also personally dealt with the state’s property insurance crisis. In 2020, she sued Southern Fidelity Property & Casualty insurance, alleging a breach of contract after the Bayshore condo, referred to as her residence, sustained “considerable damages” from a “sudden and accidental water loss,” which she said the company failed to adequately cover.

The most recent filing in that court case is a notice that the Florida Department of Financial Services is working to liquidate Southern Fidelity Insurance — since it is one of several Florida insurance companies that has gone under this year.

A woman wearing a real estate company shirt answered the door Tuesday to Tampa Bay Times reporters at the Bayshore condominium where cardboard boxes could be seen inside.

The woman did not give any information about the house and did not say if she knew Huerta. She did say no one by Huerta’s name lives in the house now. When reporters asked her name, she closed the door.

The property has been on the real estate site Zillow for close to 100 days. The listing states the home has three bedrooms and three bathrooms and is 1,617 square feet. It is listed at $489,000.

The townhouse sits in the Ballast Point neighborhood, a few blocks south of where Bayshore’s iconic waterfront stretch meets Gandy Boulevard. Heavy traffic moved north along the narrow roadway Tuesday afternoon beneath a canopy of tree branches.

A car with a Texas license plate was parked near the condominium Tuesday afternoon.

A man who was inside walked out to meet a woman who had recently arrived. Neither identified themselves or said if they knew Huerta. Both walked back into the house and later left in two separate cars, both with Florida license plates. The woman’s Jeep Wrangler had a New England Patriots bumper sticker on it.

While they were all inside, a real estate agent whose client was interested in the house arrived.

The man, who did not provide his name, said he did not know about Huerta or the history of the property.

Figure's Perla is a Pat's fan (reporters spied her bumper sticker). A Tampa resident her house is on the market but the press is hot on her tail.

That is how many campaigned the last several years. Both TN senators basically ran campaigns that they would do what Trump wanted....or painting themselves as the Trump supporting candidate.

I doubt any Democrats use that with Biden ! :ROFLMAO:
Biden definitely does not have millions of fanatics that follow his every word like a cult.
Exactly which is why the accusation of Biden Bros is so funny.

I'll repeat what I've said in the past: DeSantis' "RBF" problem is substantively meaningless but could end up causing a political problem for him if it helps cement his image as an asocial weirdo
Hey GB hope all is well. I read some of the comments on that thread or whatever it's called on Twitter. So I wonder how many pictures were taken to get that Still to make him look dejected. I know sometimes I look down when I'm walking I'm sure you do as well. If someone took a picture we might look dejected. Reading those comments you would think he is the most unpopular Gov ever. We both know the opposite is true.

It's like Twitter is bizzaro world. Maybe Elon can fix it but I doubt it.

Hey Rusty, I don't disagree with you. For anyone who doesn't know, RBF stands for "Resting B#### Face", and refers to exactly what you're talking about: how your face looks in those moments when you get caught on a candid photo. I have a similar problem, so to an extent I sympathize with DeSantis (it's also one of many, many reasons why you'll never catch me running for dog catcher, much less governor). And I could be totally wrong that it ever becomes a thing people notice. Still, in the white-hot spotlight of an (expected) presidential campaign, if it keeps happening, particularly when he's around members of the Biden family, it could become an issue, mostly because it feeds into the notion of DeSantis being somewhat of an odd duck

For me, it doesn't feed into the notion he's an odd duck. It feeds into the notion he's a ****.
Well, you're probably not the type of voter he has any chance of convincing. If we end up with a Trump-DeSantis primary, it will be interesting to see how much Trump goes after him on his personality. He does have a talent for zeroing in on people's weak spots

Bullies tend to have that built in talent.

The problem is the Democrats in FL . Can't seem to find another Lawton Chile's or even a Bob Graham. Instead they throw out people like Gillum or for God's sake Crist. At least Crist doesn't have a substance abuse problem that we know of. If you investigate and go back far enough you may find our home owners insurance problem started with Crist.

Florida Democrats are hapless. Their bigger problem is that they can't develop any strong Latino candidates in South Florida. That should be their natural base, but instead they get hammered with charges of "socialism" which holds down their margins in the region (even as they get killed in the rural parts of the state).

Gillum did a lot of things right politically, and if not for his personal baggage would have probably won. But there aren't a lot of "sober Gillums" coming up through the Dems' farm system.

While I didn't vote for him as governor, I was pleasantly surprised by his first few months in office. I have a liberal social bias, but conservative fiscal bias, so I don't necessarily vote in lockstep with Democrats. However, I refuse to vote for the MAGA wing of the Republican party, so as long as Desantis caters to their politics, I'm out.

Biden definitely does not have millions of fanatics that follow his every word like a cult.
You guys aren't noticing all the Biden flags, Biden bumper stickers, or Biden rallies where everyone wears blue hats and chants **** Donald Trump? There are even news stations devoted to the Biden rally coverage. Open your eyes.

Want to report I just got back from the Palm Beach Home Depot -- getting tools etc to go help my wife's cousin who's house in Arcadia was under 4 feet of water  -- anyway, went to get pull on rubber boots --and all that was left were -----white ones

Amen. Gillum went to the same Jr. High I did in Miami, albeit I went many years before he did. Before the election he gave us hope. After, well not so much. He attributes his fall to the meth hotel with his "buddies" to post election loss depression. He was very sharp in the debate against the now gov.

I had hope for Fried at first too but she fizzled badly.

I voted for Crist because he stank less to me than the alternatives and I felt he had the only chance to unseat the greater of two evils. Just like I voted for Biden. And I'm not a dem, quite the indy.

Gillum almost beat DeSantis 4 years ago, lost by just 0.4%. If he were Governor, we'd still have a balanced budget, people and companies would still be fleeing high tax states. He proposed an increase in the corporate tax rate to give teachers more money, but with a GOP controlled house and senate, I don't think that would've happened.

Regarding the insurance crisis, I think it started with hurricane Andrew in 1992. But it has definitely gotten much worse since DeSantis became governor. The optics of trying to deal with the crisis in a special session in May, just a month before the start of hurricane season, is bad. Especially given the emphasis by DeSantis in the regular session on dealing with wokeness.

>>Costs also have skyrocketed. In 2019, when DeSantis was sworn in, Floridians paid an average premium of $1,988. This year, it’s now $4,231, triple the national average, according to an Insurance Information Institute analysis.<<

Florida’s latest homeowners insurance crisis is a mess decades in the making

I think there is one waiting in the wings that could win and make a good governor and I would vote for. Jerry Demings has all the makings of a good Governor. He's a good leader has ran a pretty large county and was an excellent Sheriff.

rubber boots --and all that was left were -----white ones
Now all you need is a clown mask to complete your Halloween costume.
Geez guys I've got a pair of those exact same ones in my garage. I use em as waders when I go to mosquito lagoon to fish. At least I don’t wear a red hat with them.
I was actually cutting Ronnie a break there -- white rubber boots are common in coastal areas. Thank heavens they didn't have my size though

I don’t know nearly enough about insurance but shouldn’t Florida homeowners have to pay more since they are in a Much higher risk of hurricanes?
Absolutely. As I remember, the post-Andrew (1992) increases in premiums were mostly legit, although there was some fraud and overpayment. Many people upgraded their homes or added pools (my sister) with the insurance money. Roof and entry standards were upgraded and eventually insurance policies were revised to have huge deductibles for roof damage to keep down premiums and questionable claims. That was the the status around 2014 when I sold my house near Miami Beach. Since then, fraud has increased, and is a major contributor to premium increases. There is also a debate about how to calculate the actuarial risk. What if Ian had hit Tampa Bay? The damage could've been 2 times worse, or perhaps 10 times worse. How do you factor that into premiums and insurance solvency. That's for damage from wind, but what about flood insurance premiums for those in low-lying areas, and should they even rebuild? The Leonardo Arms condo had approved plans to build a seawall on Ft. Myers Beach before Ian because there was only a few feet of sand between the condo and the gulf at high tide ... now I wonder what their plans.

I don't blame DeSantis for the insurance crisis, but premiums have more than doubled since he became governor and are likely to go up more. Holding a special session in May to address (ineffectively) this just a month before the start of hurricane season has bad political optics. Ian coming a couple of weeks after the Martha Vineyard stunt compounds the bad optics. And then DeSantis saying the media was hoping for Ian to hit Tampa to hurt him politically ... what is DeSantis thinking?

Bad Ronald at it again, killing trees:

Projects worth $175M killed

DeSantis rejects funding, including $2.5M for some of the last forested land in Pinellas.

BY LAWRENCE MOWER AND TRACEY MCMANUS

Times Staff Writers

TALLAHASSEE — The $2.5 million that a panel of lawmakers granted last month to the West Klosterman Preservation Group was supposed to save the 14 acres of untouched forest in Pinellas County from development.

But the grant was killed along with financial pledges for scores of other projects across the state after Gov. Ron DeSantis failed to take a necessary step to distribute the money.

The awards were part of a provision for “local support grants” tucked into the state budget that the governor had signed in June.

The panel of lawmakers awarded 238 projects last month across Florida worth $175 million, including more than 30 in Tampa Bay. The two-year battle to save the West Klosterman land appeared won.

But with no announcement, DeSantis failed to distribute the money to state agencies by a Sept. 30 deadline dictated by state law, meaning the $175 million of local projects across the state are now unfunded.

“The preserve is environmental resiliency,” said Kay Carter, treasurer of the West Klosterman group. “I feel it is shortsighted to continue to leave projects like this unfunded and unprotected.”

With the state flush with billions of dollars in reserves, the move is a not-so-subtle dig at Republican lawmakers and the latest assertion of power from Florida’s boundary-pushing governor.

DeSantis’ office did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

With the budget surplus, DeSantis should be investing in land purchases around our beautiful springs, coastline, forests, and elsewhere. This would be an opportunity to cement his legacy - you know how they have those plaques at parks, like Teddy Roosevelt's name at Muir Woods near San Francisco. That's how I would be thinking if I were governor.

Wouldn’t the premiums be tied to the property value though? That would be a big reason for increased rates. I don’t feel too sorry for any of the insurance firms as every other commercial seems to be a insurance commercial.
