The 100 Greatest movies of the 1970s. 1. The Godfather (2 Viewers)

i mean for christs sake tim the boys are thirsty in atlanta and theres beer in texarkana and they are going to bring it back no matter what it takes you tell me a better plot for a movie ever take that to the bank brochacho
Look when he starts the show by saying Billy Jack 1, 2, 3 isn't on the list, he's already starting way behind the pack. There is little hope that Smokey & the Bandit cracks the top 10 let alone #1 brohamus.

Star Wars was/is a cultural phenomenon that still rages on today.

#20?

Lord man.
Tim is asleep at the wheel. This is a top 10 movie of all time. I like the next Star Wars movie better but this movie was mind blowing at the time and launched the franchise into the stratosphere

19. The Last Waltz (1978)
Directed by: Martin Scorcese
Starring: The Band, The Staple Singers, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Neil Diamond
Synopsis:
Documents The Band’s last concert in San Francisco with guest stars.

Its the beginning of the beginning of the end of the beginning- Robbie Robertson

IMO, the best concert film ever made. Such great performances, including “Coyote” by Joni Mitchell, “Caravan” by Van Morrison, “I’m a Man” by Muddy Waters, and this one, the most classic of all:

Thread officially blocked from my account after the Star Wars placement. Perhaps the most important movie of the last 60 years. Essentially started the concept of movie franchises and this one has the following of i dunno ... a couple billion people. Empire Strikes Back is a better film, but SW was indeed the Beatles of movies.

But is this a ranking of the most iconic movies of the 70s or tim’s personal rankings?

Personal ranking threads and the disagreements within are way more fun. If we just want a list of the most popular movies, IMDb already exists.

I assume not his personal rankings since SW wouldn't be in his top 50 if he says he doesn't like it

This is not the 100 most important movies of the 1970s. If it was I’m still not sure Star Wars would be the #1 choice. It would certainly be higher. But I don’t think that 20 is an inappropriate ranking in terms of greatness.

Who says I didn’t like it? I love Star Wars. I’m not a fan of the franchise.

It’s the ranking that Tim thinks Rolling Stone writers would put together.

You're not ranking the franchise though.

I don't know how by any measure there are 19 movies from the 70's better than Star Wars.

Edit: Well, I guess there is one...as we're seeing.

It’s like a combo. There’s a few movies he ranks despite not being a favorite of his.

It's worse. It's neither.

Leaving on movies he doesn't even like. If it's opinion, then great. But then come up with 100 movies you like, and leave off the ones you don't.

If this is personal rankings, and he didn't like Mad Max, why is it on the list?

I could not disagree more that this is a bad decade. I think it's the best. Mel Brooks, Scorsese, DePalma, Lucas, Spielberg, Cassavetes, Coppola, Friedkin, Monty Python, horror classics, sci-fi took a massive jump, blaxsploitation classics, cult classics, on and on. There's more quality across different genres in this decade than any other.

There’s not a movie on this list that I don’t like: I can note flaws and still like the movie. Mad Max was enjoyable.

I also think the 70's were a great decade for movies.

Avatar checks out.

This is a travishmockery, an outrage and it cannot be allowed to stand.

No Smokey and the Bandit AND Star Wars is #20. Men have been shot for less.

(Please Note: I do not condone any actual violence against our good man, Timsch O'Chet. I am merely saying if it were legal, we should shoot him. But alas it is not.)

We could always make him watch Smokey and the Bandit.

18. Chinatown (1974)

Directed by: Roman Polanski

Starring: Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway

Synopsis:
A private eye discovers corruption in Los Angeles regarding the water supply.

She’s my sister AND my daughter! - Faye Dunaway as Evelyn

Seminal classic here. The less said about the director the better. One of Jack’s top 5 roles.

How does it hold up? Never seen it. I was born in 74.
If you like Film Noir it's one of the best.
Godfather of Noir for me. L.A Confidential (which is brilliant) does not happen without this film.
I guess I am not a fan of Noir then. I didn't really care for LA Confidential either. It was fine but I didn't think it was as great as all the accolades.

It’s very difficult to know what happened to he and his wife and separate that from the ending.

What a movie. I’ll never forget where I was and who I was with when I saw it the first time (I did not know the backstory nor was I anything but a film ingenue). I couldn’t sleep and wrote my new girlfriend on this newfangled thing called email about it. We dated for two years or so after. Crazy movie.

Ohhhhhh nooooooo

I need to revisit LA Confidential. I only saw it once and it wasn't very memorable.

Wow....I really love that movie.

L.A. Confidential was a really good movie.

Can’t remember for the life of me what it was all about, but enjoyed it immensely. Very QT and very hush-hush.

Every time I watch it, it moves up higher on my all time favorite film list.

17. Taxi Driver (1976)

Directed by: Martin Scorsese

Starring: Robert DeNiro, Cybill Shepherd, Jodie Foster

Synopsis:
An NYC taxi driver and Vietnam Vet is fascinated with prostitution and guns.

You talkin’ to me? You talkin to ME? - Robert DeNiro as Travis Bickle.

This is a dreamlike film. It actually reminds me of some European movies I’ve seen such as 8 1/2, in that it doesn’t seem quite real as you’re watching. New York City is really ugly in this movie (as opposed to an upcoming film on this list in which it is presented as beautiful.) This is obviously one of DeNiro’a greatest roles.

is it like a criteria on your list that the director did something creepy with an underage girl or what i seem to sense a pattern in tims choices here hell hal needham from smokey was a good man whose friendship with burt reynolds inspired tarantinos once upon a time in hollywood and who did a lot of great stunts made a bunch of timeless movies but who was by most accounts just a good dude and not creepy so he probably never had a chance on old timmys list take that to the bank brochachos

DeNiro improvised the famous lines quoted above
