No Starship Troopers, no Gattaca, no The Rock, no Galaxy Quest, No Before Sunrise, no 12 Monkeys. I thought for sure Back to the Future part tres would be on here. Hell, I'd even argue that Home Alone deserves a place on this list. Not to mention some of the low level 90's movies that no one but me would put on a list. I'm pretty convinced that Tim is AI that didn't live through the 90's.

The only thing good about it is Newman's score.I remember when he gave a Thumbs Down to the Natural.I was looking at some of Roger's lowest rated movies, and it's a list of some of my favorites: Dead Poets, The Master, Usual Suspects, Elephant Man, Clockwork Orange, Fight Club, Fast Times. Beetlejuice is on there so I did agree with something on the list.It's just hard for me to imagine a movie critic thinking none of these movies deserved even an average rating.

Strong agreement. It’s all wrong even down to Redford being totally miscast. Sure he had a great look for the part, if he had played it in the late 60s but but 84 he was almost 50 years old. Insane to cast him as a young naive baseball prospect.Sure there is. It's just awful. Dorky, maudlin plot that makes no sense at all. Quick thoughts on the last few...
The Shawshank Redemption is, in my view, one of the five best films ever. Not making the top 10 for the 90s alone is madness, but it is what it is. A perfect film in every way. Is there a sadder sequence in any film ever than the one when Brooks get out of prison? And the music there, just a piano mainly with those melancholy notes, is the chef's kiss.
Good Will Hunting is one I would have had top 20, so it being 12th feels about right. "It's not about you, you mathematical ****!" is still one of the corniest lines ever (no one would ever say that), but it's otherwise a fantastic flick. Robin Williams deserved that Oscar, Matt Damon was awesome in the main role, and while Ben Affleck isn't nearly the actor that his best friend is, the scene where Chucky tells Will the deal ("I would give anything to have what you got.") is awesome, and Affleck nailed it.
The Unforgiven is great and has probably four or five of the greatest lines ever. "We all have it coming," Very quotable movie, despite its nature. The reason I think it might be the best ever adaptation (besides The Mist) is because I loved the story line of the movie better than the book. The movie focused way more on Warden Norton and Andy stealing his money was MUCH better than the book where his friend on the outside invested Andy's own money for him while he was in prison.I saw this movie once years ago and thought "meh" though in my defense my tastes have changed in the past 20 something years so I might like it better now.I think a lot of people might argue The Shinning and while I haven't seen a ton of the films/shows based on his books-I did really really like The Mist

I don’t think it’s dreadful but it’s extremely overrated imo. It’s very very flawed. The two things it has going for it: the score and beautiful cinematography are very strong and cover up for many flaws. There are definitely things to nitpick (like Redfords age) but it's a movie. Every movie you have to suspend some disbelief but it's a great sports movie and hits all the checkpoints.
I have never heard of this movie and have no idea what it is.

So as I wrote earlier I am no expert on foreign language films- this is the best one I’ve ever seen but I haven’t seen that many so let me add that this is one of the greatest films I have ever seen period. It is both a very serious film and a black comedy (the quote I used by Delpy, indeed her whole character, is an example of the latter, as is the hilarious dream sequence in which Solly envisions Hitler and Stalin waltzing together). There are so many amazing, powerful scenes. Let me list a few:
1. The Soviet school, which is presented prior to the Hitler Youth school, very effectively shows the horror of totalitarianism from the left. (The candy scene.)
2. The horror of war when Solly loses all of his German comrades in Russia in a matter of a few seconds.
3. The swimming contest at the Hitler Youth school when the camera widens out to reveal a huge swastika in the pool- brilliant.
4. The complete horror and misery of the Warsaw Ghetto is presented only through a blurry, tiny glimpse from the streetcar- again brilliant.
There is so much more. Brilliantly acted, brilliantly filmed.

And people have different ways to look at ratings too. Maybe he graded all the Oscar type dramas on a curve like I do with genre movies. It's just a quirk or pet peeve that I have when I see movies by great directors with good acting or cinematography getting 2/10 type ratings from critics or even people around here. The worst I usually get with stuff like would be a 4/10 on my scale, which is a movie I finished, didn't like, but there was something interesting and I could see why other people would like it, and could even recommend it to people I thought would click more with it. I also think grading from 1-4 stars is silly too, soI don’t think it’s dreadful but it’s extremely overrated imo. It’s very very flawed. Planning to watch it this weekend. Very open to the possibility it belongs higher.
As an example, I would much rather watch The Player than Shawshank. I like both but prefer one over the other, quite strongly.
