The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s 1. Goodfellas (48 Viewers)

3. Boogie Nights (1997)

Directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, Heather Graham

Synopsis:
The rise and fall of a late 70s porn star.

You’ve got the touch! Sung by Mark Wahlberg as Dirk Diggler.

“The Touch” is my favorite scene. I still argue to this day that it would have been a huge hit except that the bass got in the way of the vocals.

This movie is a revelation. I could watch it a zillion times and it would never get old. All of the actors are outstanding. There are some very very dark moments in this- perhaps the darkest is when Roller Girl confronts the guy who knew her in high school. Or when Dirk is alone with the dude in the car. Or the court case (the guy who played Julianne Moore’s husband was John Doe from X!) So many classic moments, feel Iike I’m not doing it justice here.
Never seen it :bag:

OH COME ON!!!!
Because of GM shaming I watched it last night. Doesn’t do anything for me. Had I seen it before I would have called into question the entirety of your list for ranking this at #3.

Well, yeah, this is like - um - imported Italian nylon. And its like a special edition, limited silk print. And it was done by this really famous - um - design artist, from Italy.

Every scene in this movie works. I've lost track of how many times I've seen it.

Watched Heat last night, for the first time. It was OK, definitely good enough for top 100 of the decade, nowhere near top 20, imo.

Also watched part of the Matrix, but lost interest about 2/3 way through.

Wings of the Dove might be more your speed, Gladys.
Sorry, just not into shoot outs and special effects. I do like suffering though.

Pretty sure I’ll like Boogie Nights.

I made it less far than you with the Matrix. Thought it was dumb.

Heat is hardly about special effects. This wasn't The Rock. The dialog alone makes this a great film - forget the action sequences. Acting was top shelf too.

Boogie Nights is a national treasure. I'm sure you'll hate it.

For me, the action is the juice

The dialogue was decent in Heat, but not congruent with how people speak irl. And the major shoot out was ridiculous. Hard to argue it doesn’t have a great cast.

I’m not looking for a documentary, but prefer police/crime thrillers to be a bit more realistic.

And based on descriptions here, I’m pretty sure Boogie Nights will be right up my alley.

He said he likes the suffering, so he might at least like the 2nd half of Boogie.

For Term I will recommend a PSH double feature. Since he likes the darker side, how about Love Liza? It's on Prime, and one that come up in my research.

They trained like crazy for that shootout, and they show it for some police training as an example of how to change a clip(magazine?).

Looks intriguing, but I don’t live the fast-paced Prime lifestyle. :kicksrock:

I’m just speaking in terms of the probability not being shot by half of LAPD, even if you aren’t dragging a wounded colleague.

Was that a first watch of The Matrix?
I remember disliking the painful stop/slow motion action scenes, and am aware of its cultural influence, but never had seen more than bits and pieces.

Now, I’ve seen a bigger piece, doubt I’ll watch the rest.

Cool that you watched it. Not everyone loves every movie. Might be best to stick to reruns of Little House on the Prairie. ;)
I dislike wholesome movies even more.

No, Termi, dialogue in movies is not congruent to the way people speak in real life. Welcome to movies.

I imagine you walk around speaking like the cast of Titanic?

Fair point. I am so along for the ride by then that things like that don't bother me. I also think it helps that Pacino is so over the top, that I am on board when the action goes that direction a little. It has flaws, but I just love the ride, and I don't seem to get tired of watching it.

Your taste in action movies is as bad as your opinion on backing into parking spaces is good.

:D
You’d think an impatient person would enjoy the fast pace, but they mostly drone on with the thoughtfulness of a back-up alarm.

Oh, no criticism, I’m a fan of both. A better question would be which police/crime thrillers do you like the most?

I really like exposing human depravity, which was far more evident in SOTL than Heat.

Silence and Goodfellas are great. Stretching the definition of the genre, Unforgiven, Fargo, and No Country too. Also liked the Departed and Wolf of Wall Street.
