The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s 1. Goodfellas (99 Viewers)

Their top 10: Malkovich, Rushmore, Unforgiven, Res. Dogs, Out of Sight, Chungking Express, Dazed, Toy Story 2, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas.
I have no idea what chunking is and out of sight? Really?

Agree the rest are leaps and bounds above Shawshank though, Rushmore maybe the exception there
Out of Sight is a fantastic movie, as is Chungking

Tim really disrespected Chungking Express.
Is it confirmed Chunking not showing up?
I can guarantee one of my top 20, also by Wong Kar-wai- Fallen Angels- will not be on this list.

but that's one I haven't seen since the theaters- which I walked out of completely amazed by. similar reaction to Dreamlife of Angels- I think Belgian?- that I know won't be here either. haven't seen either again... and I wonder how either of them would hold up for me.

eta: I mentioned rewatching So I Married an Axe Murderer recently... one of my faves from the period and in my memory from the original vieiwing, a fantastic comedy. found it pretty poor on rewatch, outside of some still really funny bits. so I'm getting nervous about some of these that I've held in such internal high regard....

Out of Sight didn't grab me as much- fun, but probably not in my top 100. Chungking... definitely. fantastic movie.

eta: oh damn.. .just realized one of my all time top 10 is 2000, not 90s as I remembered. Yi Yi.

Fallen Angels holds up great. Criterion has a great collection of Wong Kar Wai films that I bought during one of their 50% off sales a couple of years ago.

it was so stylized, and I think later imitated, I was worried that that hyper-stylized story-telling I was so amzed by would feel dated or cliche at this point.

For me Out of Sight is one of those I didn't get to until later and it grows on me more and more as I watch it. Just a cool, sexy, very well shot and acted movie. Shawshank in a way is the opposite for me - I have loved it since the first time seeing it, but I do have it memorized and I find myself grabbing other movies over it now.

Regardless, my point was a bit what you bring up with the foreign movies as well. I get the impression that many in the thread don't bother with foreign language movies, so right there lists would be varied. Also the AV club list included documentaries, which also usually gets skipped over in lists. THEN add to that people doing the lists have different criteria for the list - is it movies that represent the decade the best?, is is just your favorite movies that came out in the 90s?, do you watch all genres and movies from around the world? That is the stuff that makes these different lists and discussions great. It becomes boring seeing the same 15 movies rotating through everybody's top 10 lists as though there is no difference in opinion on these movies.

16. The Matrix (1999)

Directed by: The Wachowskis

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving

Synopsis:
A computer hacker discovers that humanity is trapped in a simulated reality.

There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.- Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus

What Bladerunner was for the 1980s, The Matrix was for the late 90s: a science fiction film so brimming with new ideas and visual effects that it basically changed cinematic history. In that sense it may be one of the most important films on this list. However, as always, I rank it in terms of entertainment value. When I first saw it I didn’t consider the impact it would have. I watched it, was absorbed in the plot, the characters, the martial arts and use of different speed cinematography, and I thought, “that’s really cool.” Pretty much feel the same now.
The Matrix was on last night. Hadn't seen it in awhile so I watched, mostly because of this thread. Still good.

12. Good Will Hunting (1997)

Directed by: Gus Van Sant

Starring: Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck

Synopsis:
A troubled math genius undergoes therapy.

You’re not perfect sport, and let me save you the suspense: the girl you met, she’s not perfect either. But the question is whether or not you’re perfect for each other- Robin Williams as Sean

Damon and Affleck’s brilliant script is filled with long monologues: totally unrealistic, but so quotable and they really work in the film. Who can forget the scene when Will takes down the onnoxious grad student? Or the much more serious scene when Robin Williams takes down Will? Or the scene towards the end of the film when Will pointedly explains why he might not want to work for the defense industry? These are all classic.
Also much love to this film for introducing me to the music of the late Elliot Smith.

I'd probably have this in my top 3-5. One of my favorite movies and I was incensed that it lost Best Picture to Titanic.

Interesting. I've seen this movie probably 10-15 times and the music has ever stood out to me. I'll have to check him out.

Elliott Smith lived in Portland as does the director of GWH, Gus Van Sant. It's a very haunting sound that Smith produces, but it worked beautifully in this film.

The house that Smith occasionally lived in and recorded some of his music is now owned by Shin's lead singer/founder James Mercer.

I like this movie very much. But Louis CK's take down of it is very funny. (obviously NSFW)

Saving Private Ryan is brilliant with an emotional powerhouse finish.
My only complaint is that they filmed every battle scene with the jerky handheld camera which made perfect sense with the chaotic opening scene, but got a little tiresome by the end.
Sounds eerily similar to Shaving Ryan’s Privates.
Another classic albeit a different genre
Right up there with The Witches of Breastwick and The Hills Have Thighs.
Throbinhood - Prince of Beaves
Sorrest Rump
The Firm

Very first thing i thought of when i saw this ranked.
Unlike most movies Tim has listed in the top 20 so far, it doesn’t deserve a one in front if his number
Not sure I would have this top 20 as you can pick holes everywhere, but it got Robin an Oscar and Ben and Matt out from under the shadow of Kevin Smith lol

But like Woo films, which I genuinely appreciate, wouldn't rate highly enough to list them.

File this under something interesting to probably just me, but I'm going through Siskel & Ebert's top 10 movies by year for the decade of the 90s and only one of Tim's movies ranked 90-100 made one of their year-end lists with Siskel ranking it #10 in 1995 (see if one of you can guess it).

Let's see how the movies ranked 80-89 fare.

11. Unforgiven (1992)

Directed by: Clint Eastwood

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris

Synopsis:
A former, aging outlaw takes on a final bounty.

I’ve killed women and children. I’ve killed everything that walks or crawls at one time or another. And I’m here to kill uou, Little Bill, for what you done to Ned. - Clint Eastwood

So good. Is it the greatest western of all time? I can’t quite go there; I’ve got The Searchers and High Noon on a level of their own. But after those two this is as good as anything I’ve seen in this genre, including Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns which are also classic. The late Gene Hackman is simply brilliant here as well.

The best ever adaptation of a Stephen King story
I saw this movie once years ago and thought "meh" though in my defense my tastes have changed in the past 20 something years so I might like it better now. I think a lot of people might argue The Shinning and while I haven't seen a ton of the films/shows based on his books-I did really really like The Mist

I remember loving this when I saw it the first time in the theater. I started a rewatch multiple times, but never finished again. Not sure why.

Is it confirmed Chunking not showing up?
no. Earlier Tim said there were going to be only 2 Foreign Language movies. So it's either Chungking Express which I've never seen (or heard of until this list) but is held in high regard or Run Lola Run or The City of Lost Children, If it's Chungking Express or The City of Lost Children that means Run Lola Run missed out which is crazy and The City of Lost Children should never be this high. Its quite a quagmire but either way there will be a riot.
Heavy hitters here. This was my 7 when I did my list and man I wonder if I underrated it.
isn't this what you guys call chalk?

Definitely better than Shawshank

Guess I will probably be the lone dissenter on this. But I never understood the love for Unforgiven. Watched it once, was bored out of my mind. Despite the universal love for it never could bring myself to try and watch it again.

Their top 10: Malkovich, Rushmore, Unforgiven, Res. Dogs, Out of Sight, Chungking Express, Dazed, Toy Story 2, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas.
Tim really disrespected Chungking Express.
Is it confirmed Chunking not showing up?
At this stage almost certainly.
If it is in the top 10, i will take back everything bad i have said about his rankings in this thread. Same with.Three Colors Red
But it wont be.

Looking at the top 100 movies from Rolling Stone gives me a fair idea of what the top 10 will actually be
Heat, Titanic, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Schindler’s List, Malcolm X, Silence of the Lambs, Hoop Dreams, Fargo. The tough one is the foreign one
Eat Drink, Man Woman
Europa
Princess Mononoke
Three Colors Red/White/Blue
Hard Boiled
Chungking Express

This is a Top 5 all timer for me - so while it’s under ranked (imo) glad to see it fairly high at least.
