The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #67. Scream (10 Viewers)

For other reasons I had Defending Your Life rented from the library at home. Now that it is on a tim list, I am not so sure I want to put this one in.... ;)

I promise I won’t spoil anything about the prequel, Second-to-last of the Mohicans, or the direct to video sequels, Natty Bumpo’s Revenge, and Hey, Turns Out There Was One More Mohican.
I was smiling as I read your various titles, but this last one made me literally laugh out loud. :lmao:

80. Se7en (1995)

Directed by: David Fincher

Starring: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Gwyneth Paltrow

Synopsis:
A serial killer attempts to reenact the Seven Deadly Sins.

Wanting people to listen, you can’t just tap them on the shoulder anymore. You have to hit them with a sledgehammer, and then you notice you’ve got their strict attention. - Kevin Spacey as John Doe.

Adjectives I would use to describe this film, which I watched on opening weekend: Gross. Disgusting. Horrifying. Fascinating. Dark. Depressing. Memorable. Intense. It’s one of those films that I will always remember well, but I’ve never felt the need to see it again.

I’ll never forget watching this movie with my sister, her husband and my grandmother - tough old bird and she wasn’t fazed at all but man a few of those scenes were uncomfortable with grandma sitting right there.

Would probably be Top 10 for me.

You're aren't going to remind us how great this movie is compared to each of the next 79 picks are you?
(I agree, I would have it ranked much higher)

It’s unlikely.

79. A League Of Their Own (1992)

Directed by: Penny Marshall

Starring: Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Jon Lovitz, Garry Marshall

Synopsis:
During World War II the Major League Baseball owners establish a woman’s league.

Are you crying? There’s no crying! There’s no crying in baseball! - Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan

If you can get through this movie without crying at the end when the two sisters reunite at Cooperstown, you’re a stronger dude than I am. I freely admit I bawled. Actually the entire movie is about the rivalry between the two girls. Buts it’s great fun and one of the better baseball films ever made.

There are not 79 movies better than this from the 90s.
Ive held my tongue so far, but this is the first major mistake.

As usual, i will keep reading lol

Eta... And I enjoyed Madonna here.
Agreed, which is the exception for Madonna, not the rule but she was reined in well here. This is also Rosie O'Donnell's best movie by far
Exactly so. Even as Susan (desperately seeking), I couldnt take her, or in much else. But she was just right here.... Lol... Some line like, oops bosom, was perfect. And yeah! Rosie was much less Rosie here and also got it right.

Ok now this is egregious.

Sure in 2025, the idea of A League of their Own and especially that cast just seems absolutely horrible. But. Here me out. In 1992 it was a decent movie.

***Ducks head***

With the exception of tripitup, it seems like most people liked this. pretty sure they made a remake of this that didn't do well.

78. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

Directed by: James Foley

Starring: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey

Synopsis:
A group of salesmen are put under enormous pressure to close land purchases.

Put that coffee down. Coffee is for closers only! - Alec Baldwin as Blake.

Great, dark film based on the David Mamet play, with an all star cast. This is “Death of a Salesman” on steroids and everyone is terrific. Side note: in a few weeks I will be seeing the play revived on Broadway, Check out this cast: Kieran Culkin, Bob Odendirk, Bill Burr, Michael McKean. That’s as good as the movie cast, IMO.

Yeah, not to pile on, but Se7en is a movie that should be well outside of my enjoyment zone. I don't tend to like movies with an overly dark take on man, I don't tend to like movies with gross scenes, and I don't really like Brad Pitt as an actor. But even with all that Se7en's one of my favorite movies of the 90s. Just tremendously well done.

I have never had any desire to watch A League of Their Own.
You should. It is a good baseball movie with some iconic lines. Lovitz is hilarious and would have liked to have him in it a bit more. He was great in the parts he was in.
I really dislike Lovitz, but he is great here.
Lovitz is not the issue/issues. I probably could have handled watching Madonna and Rosie back in 1992 but that ship has long since sailed.

Very limited screen time, but terrific pound for pound performance:

League of their Own was a fun movie- well written, acted and directed... And I learned about something I'd never heard of.

I also feel like the ranking here is about right. Fully deserving of top 100, but bottom quarter.

If anyone ever happens to pass through Rockford, Illinois, there’s a pretty cool museum dedicated to women’s baseball there.

I was also looking for a Cheap Trick museum in the town, to no avail.

Normally I have an effenhemier threshold with movies. If there get to be too many I'll turn off the movie.

But the F-word is a character of its own in GGR. It signifies the desperation in the men and shows how much they're unprepared to swim with the Alec Baldwin/Blake-type sharks. The word sounds absolutely phony coming out of their mouths. They know it, and so do we. So it actually adds to the performances and story.
