Cowboys hire former kicker, Chris Boniol, as kicking consultant for David Buehler.

"We want to give every chance for David, and anyone else in competition for that job, to be the best that he can be and to get him as ready for the season as possible," said Cowboys special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, who said he believes Buehler can learn a lot, both on and off the field from Boniol.

The thing is, Jay Feely isn't interested in shopping for a new team. He'd prefer to remain with the Jets and sign a contract before the free-agency period begins. "I'd love to get back there," Feely said from his home in Plantation, Fla. "We have had negotiations and discussions, and they were very pleasant, very positive. They're very pleased with how I kicked over the past couple years and the leadership I showed. [special teams coordinator] Mike Westhoff and I got along great. It's just a matter of coming to an agreement on a contract."

As for the Folk signing, Feely wasn't offended. Kickers sometimes are signed for offseason purposes and can be cast aside easily. "They're being prudent," Feely said.

Twenty years into a kicking career that launched before the NFL's salary cap era, Matt Stover becomes a free agent on Friday. Absent a contract offer to play in a family-friendly environment, he says he will retire from the game. "I'm willing to let this thing go at the drop of a hat if that's what is best for my family," the former Ravens kicker said. "My heart isn't in it to play just to play. It's to make a difference for a team and create security in a position that maybe somebody else couldn't give them." Make no mistake, though: Stover, who at 42 became the oldest player to participate in a Super Bowl last month when he kicked for the Indianapolis Colts, believes he can still make big field goals and help a contending team. Toward that end, he will keep his options open. And yes, one of those options is the Ravens, with whom he spent 13 seasons. "I will let it play itself out," Stover said. "I'm not a first-day call. If I don't get picked up by April or May, I'll have to ask myself, 'Do I really want to go through this again?' No. But if I can help a team get to the Super Bowl, if it was a legit team, I would. The Ravens are one of those teams."

Minnesota Kickoff Specialist

Rhys Lloyd decided to sign with the Vikings after a day-long visit with the team convinced him they are serious about carrying a kickoff specialist for the first time since Brad Childress took over as coach in 2006. Ryan Longwell will continue to handle field-goal and extra-point duties.

"I spoke to the coaching staff today and kind of picked their brains on what they wanted from me," Lloyd said. "I think their ultimate goal in the future is for me to be the field-goal guy and kickoff guy. But this year is me purely doing kickoffs. Ryan is doing the field goals, and I'm quite happy with that. We'll take it from there.

Lloyd, 27, has not attempted a field goal in three NFL seasons with Baltimore and Carolina, but he has 51 touchbacks over the past two years. That includes 21 on 72 kickoffs last season, tying him for sixth in the league. Longwell is coming off a season in which he made 92.9 percent of his field-goal attempts but had five touchbacks on 98 kickoffs.

"A lot of people probably think it's not that big of a deal to have a kickoff guy," said Lloyd, who became an unrestricted free agent when the Panthers decided not to extend him an offer. "But I've noticed, and I think a lot of other teams' noticed the last few years, that it does make a huge difference. I think the Vikings in talking to me really assessed what their weaknesses were and they've come to me and I'm more than happy to be that guy."

Lloyd, who had been scheduled to visit the Giants on Tuesday, will be returning home in many ways. Lloyd's family moved from Dover, England to Minnesota when he was a young man and he attended Eastview High School, where he was a standout in soccer and football. After a stint at Rochester Community and Technical College, Lloyd spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons as the kicker and punter for the Gophers.

Broncos kicker Matt Prater had his best season as a pro in 2009 and the Broncos made sure he'd be back to kick this year. Prater, who was an exclusive rights free agent, has signed a deal to return to the team. The Broncos turned the contract into the NFL today. Prater made 30-of-35 field-goal attempts last season and did not miss an extra point.

Classic.Great work Mike. Keep it coming. I know a lot of folks just don't give the PK position much consideration and while I am also guilty of not ranking them too highly on my top 200 board, I still believe it is important to stay up-to-date on the latest news regarding the position. You just never know......it could mean a big difference on a small scale at some point in an up-coming fantasy draft and/or season.

any news on Feely/Rackers/Graham situations ?
Not really... just the same non-news as the last week or so:
The top three free-agent kickers -- Shayne Graham, Neil Rackers and Jay Feely -- could finally come off the market soon. The Ravens' brain trust -- which includes owner Steve Bisciotti, general manager Ozzie Newsome and coach John Harbaugh -- all sat down and talked with Graham at the NFL owners meetings. The team also contacted Rackers. Feely recently visited the Arizona Cardinals, who haven't ruled out re-signing Rackers. And the New York Jets, who signed Nick Folk this offseason, haven't closed the door with Feely coming back. “The market is starting to open up a little bit now that the big names have signed," agent David Dunn, who represents Graham, told the Cincinnati Enquirer. The Ravens are looking to upgrade over Billy Cundiff, who has been retained as a restricted free agent.

I feel bad for Rackers, but based on this report, he and his agent played roulette. This quote from his agent is ludicrous. Of course you rejected the offer... the moment you countered. You also sat on an offer for 2 weeks before countering. You would think an agent understands such things. Frankly from a malpractice perspective he'd be better off buffaloing his client far away from the press.
Rackers' agent says Cardinals dragged their feet

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 2, 2010 6:10 PM ET

When free agent kicker Jay Feely agreed to a deal with the Cardinals today, it marked the end of the Neil Rackers era in Arizona. But there are differing accounts of why Rackers is on the way out.

The Arizona Republic reported that the Cardinals made re-signing Rackers a priority, offering him a contract on the first day of free agency that averaged close to $2 million a year, but that Rackers' agent, Robert Roche, didn't respond for two weeks.

Roche, however, told ESPN.com that it was Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves who dragged his feet on the deal, saying that he sent Graves a counter-offer after the Cardinals' initial offer, and that Graves never got back to him other than to say he was doing a budget analysis.

Roche also says he never rejected the Cardinals' offer and he was waiting to hear back from the Cardinals when the Cardinals decided to sign Feely.

Said Roche of the team's decision to sign Feely this week, "I was never given an opportunity to accept or reject the offer from the Cardinals."
