****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (2 Viewers)

Nice win on a national stage. The Glazers have to be pissed. Half full stadium from the beginning for a national game, announcers making fun of there being 497 people still there in the 4th. Not good. Does Schiano still have a job by the end of the day?

Anyway I really liked a lot of what I saw last night. I liked it that the offense was able to overcome both a big penalty and a big sack in the same drive and score. That shows the maturation of both Cam and the rest of the offense. And really this was the Cam show last night. There were definitely times when Cam put it on his shoulders. I thought the defense was a little spotty at times. But in the end the biggest stat is points allowed and they continued a historic trend there. I was worried this would be a trap game but the Panthers didn't look past them. Now they get to go into a mini-bye with a win and Atlanta looming. I have no doubt they are going to be ready to play that game. But the defense is going to have to be better to win that one IMO. Cautiously becoming optimistic.

Couldn't agree more...that drive you referred to....wasn't that also the one they went for it on 4th and 1? Dare I say these coaches have been the ones to progress the most? I was afraid they'd go back in their conservative shell on the road against a rival but they didn't

Yeah I think it was. Riverboat Rivera keeps rolling. And just like Cam I think we have seen Rivera grow. He is a better coach than he was. I think Shula is really getting it as well. And McDermott was just waiting to have the players he needed. I really like where I see the staff now. But Atlanta is going to be a big test for everyone. I know they are 2 and whatever. Hopefully they drop another one against Arizona. But records don't matter as much when it's in conference play. And Atlanta is going to come to play.

Cam does seem to be improving. He does look like a man among boys. Funny to watch the defender in the end zone on his TD run kind of dodge to avoid contact with Cam. As I said earlier in the year, let him do what he does best. Maybe the coaches finally understand what they have at QB. He's a great runner in the open field and shifty in the pocket. If Ginn doesn't whiff on the perfect pass his passing numbers are even better.

All that said, I'm still not sold yet. I just can't get past the immaturity from Cam. Rather than wasting a few seconds doing your first down pose, how about focusing on the next play. I'm concerned with how late on the play clock this team is before snapping the ball. It's great when your winning, but I sure hope they have another mode when playing from behind. The defense has been perect in the first half not allowing a TD, but we can't expect that all year. Looking forward to seeing this team succeed whenit's facing adversity.

Really enjoyed Cam's postgame interview on the NFL Network. If that's any indication, I would have to think he's become a popular guy in the locker room.

So what are everyone's thoughts on Rivera and Shula now?

I'm going to say next week is a must win if there's going to be any talk about playoffs. I'm hoping for 5-5 after the next three games. Really hoping NO loses in Seattle so maybe we don't get their best game in week 16. I don't think 9-7 will cut it for post season play.

I continue to be more leery about the coaches than I am about Cam. I'm not a big fan of the antics from ANYONE when they make a first down, score a TD (Yes....a GET OFF MY LAWN guy I guess) but it happens all the time now to the point where I don't even notice it anymore. My expectation at the beginning of the year was to be 9 - 7....I'm not changing that. They are making strides, no question so as long as they are progressing, I'm happy.

Yeah if they want to have any shot they have to beat Atlanta at least once and probably need to sweep them and Tampa. I just feel like New Orleans is going to be tough to catch. But who knows they are already banged up with the whole Graham situation.

As far as coaches go as I said above I think Rivera continues to grow into the job. I think he is better coach then he was last year and he was a better coach last year then his first year. I think it took a little time but we are starting to see the Shula system take hold, got to like 30+ a game regardless of the opponents record. And McDermott has been good from the start.

You know what just let them play. Let Cam celebrate a bit if he wants to. It isn't hurting anything and it is an emotional game. Let's not completely buy into the No Fun League.

I see nothing wrong with a player having a little bit of fun on the field. It takes 1 second to do that pose. I'm glad he's having fun. The only thing I didn't like is when Cam threw his gum on the field after the game. During the postgame interview, I liked it when they gave Cam that Warren Sapp doll, and he took the dolls hands and did the superman shirt opening with it.

I used to hate it and scoffed at any player that did it. Now, I don't even notice it, so it doesn't really bother me anymore....look at me...I'm growing :hifive: If it helps, I think Cam's celebrations are really just evidence of him having fun. I don't think he does them to taunt like a lot of other players do.

If his dad saw him do the gum thing, I bet he will say something to him. Ya know his dad and brother put together a video of Cam's interviews to show him how he came across to people. Cam said he was so embarrassed when he viewed it. He wants to be a great QB and respected, and I think he has matured a lot. He is still a work in progress, but he is getting it.

I'm a fan of it too

That said, I wish Mike Mitchell would stop posing after dropped passes and QBs running out of bounds

So uh....what did he do with the gum??? :oldunsure: Did he go stick it on a TB player's nose or something??
No he took it out of his mouth and threw it down on the field prior to post game interviews. If he had stuck it on a players nose I would have been good with that.

Yeah Cam has talked about that. It shows he has a good support group who isn't afraid to call him out on stuff. And he obviously listens as his demeanor has changed dramatically.

Act like you've been there. That aside, you have 25 seconds to run a play. It may take a second to do the pose, but it takes Cam an add'l second or two to find a location where everyone can see him. 2 seconds is 8% of the play clock. I don't see Manning giving up 8% of his allotted time to read the defense and call the right play.

I did get a kick out of Mike Tolbert posing in front of the Tampa TD Mike banner on the end zone wall. The Sapp doll was freaking hilarious.

Great win and cam just keeps getting better. Extremely tired of all the drops from the WRs though. Imagine Cam with What Peyton has right now.

It's probably misplaced but I see it like throwing gum on the sidewalk. Just seems thoughtless and a bit rude.

Oh please. Part of the plan is to use up the play clock on most plays.

I brought it up in response to Bass saying that Cam's first down posing was immature. I don't agree with him, and the only immature thing I saw Cam do was throw his gum on the field. That wad of gum was as big as a ping pong ball, and would stick like glue to someone's cleats. It wasn't that big a deal, but it is rude, nasty, and it's littering. Cam is just having fun on the job with his first down posing.

Saw Jerry Richardson at Bricktop's Friday night. That is one large man. Tried to time our exit to run into him as we were leaving the restaurant, but it didn't work out.

Pretty fired up for this game. Close as it gets to a must-win for both teams.

I still don't trust that ATL is as bad as the record says, and think this will be a dogfight.

If, for some reason they are that bad, watching CAR clobber ATL would still be loads of fun though.

Panthers absolutely have to be 5-3 before flying out to SF.

This is the game I've been waiting for. It's not that I think Atlanta is a great team, but they are a team that should give them some real competition and hopefully keep the game close. I need to see Carolina win a close game, one that's in doubt in the fourth quarter, before I fully trust them.

Everything I've seen so far gives me hope, but winning blowout games has never been the problem with Carolina (they just usually do it later in the year). It's winning a game where they are up by 3 with five minutes left.

Plus, with SF and NE coming up, it's important to get to 5-3 going into that two game stretch. I see no reason they couldn't win either game, but I'd like a buffer in terms of being over 500.

The stats tell me there is no reason this game should be close. We should handle Atlanta. They just aren't very good right now. Too banged up and no running game. No real pass rush up to now at least. Making it easy on opposing teams. Add to that that an already hot Cam seems to bring his best game for the Atlanta series and we should have DA getting some reps in the 4th.

That's what should happen.

I assume I'm not alone in having this terrible feeling that what should happen today won't.

Any sort of win here would be a huge step forward, even if just to validate we are starting to think we know about this team.

Well they delivered today. The big takeaway from this win is that the team didn't fold when Cam threw the picks. It wasn't that long ago we would have lost this game. But the defense kept working as did the offense. Some good adjustments at half time and no quit. In the end a rout. This team used to lose to teams it should beat. Let's hope this is a sign that's over.

The games just keep getting bigger though. San Fran looms large on the horizon. Then NE. A tough two game stretch and the NE game is Monday Night. It doesn't get any easier.

On and thanks to the Jets. We are now one game back and also 2-0 in our division. We got a shot here if we can capitalize.

Yeah it was. And again I think the big takeaway was the team didn't fold when adversity struck. Lose 2 guards? Just plug in the guy who was playing DT last season and keep right on rolling. Cam throws a couple of picks? Defense up, no real harm done by either. I know people have been saying they need to win one in the 4th for them to say this team is ready. I think a game like yesterday accomplishes the same thing. I am not saying these guys are going to win the NFC or anything but I see a resilient young team that is starting to figure out ways to win games instead of finding ways to lose them. And that's what good teams do.

Checked off a bunch of boxes yesterday for sure. I don't think either of the next two games mean much to the playoff hunt, but I'd like to see at least one win out of them. They should compete in both. And dare I say I think Shula actually gets it now?? :scared:

Don't jinx us!

Love how the defense is playing, although in the first half I was baffled as to why they weren't double teaming Gonzo. The previous two ATL opponents took him out of the equation and won the game easily. I was nervous that our DC hadn't seen those films and he just let Gonzo be covered by a single LB. Glad they adjusted in the second half.

I'm glad they play in SF and think it will be a good test for Cam and the offense to see how poised they play in that type of atmosphere. Should be good experienced gained win or lose.

The next two are tough. I would love to see us win in SF. That one could have major implications if we actually get to the playoffs. The way Seattle is going SF will be a wildcard. We would really like to have the tie breaker in hand if possible. And then New England is Monday night. So it's a huge marquee game. Winning that would put us on the radar big time.

As for Shula I think he got it from the beginning but it takes everyone time. A coordinator has to figure out what works in a real game. And sometimes that is way different than what works in practice. Players have to figure out what the coordinator is doing and get into the flow. I'm just glad we seem to have gotten there way earlier this year.

Yeah I wasn't very happy with the defensive play calling early on. I couldn't figure out how you let the only weapon they have beat you. Should have been double teamed and treated like a gunner coming off the line. But they definitely adjusted at half time and he did nothing from there on out.

So who are we?

a) The best team in the NFC based on point differential and points allowed. The team that has won it's last three games by an average margin of roughly 3 TDs. The team with one of the best coaching staffs that is rolling out almost flawless games plans and making perfect in game adjustments and play calls. The team with the best defense in the league (combined yards / pts allowed).

b) The team that has beat up on the cellar dwellers who have a combined 4-25 record when you exclude common opponents.

Right now we have the 6th playoff spot over Detroit based on tiebreaker.

I really hate this haven't beaten anybody thing. This isn't college ball. We didn't schedule a bunch of cream puffs. People forget the Panthers had the toughest schedule in the NFL going into the season. Who has KC beat? PFT put it best, at some point the wins overtake the yeah but.

And really there are games you should win. We are starting to win those games. Good teams beat up on poor competition and find a way to win against other good teams more often than not. We haven't been able to do that in a while. Now we are beating the dogs and this week we'll find out just how far we have come on the second part of the equation. It's interesting the only guy with a better QBR than Cam right now is Kaep IIRC.

So it looks like the spate of injuries has cleared the way for Piggy to return. Despite being past his prime he should be plug and play. But to be honest I'd like to see what Chandler has. Dude impressed the heck out of me how he just jumped in and went for it.

IMO, the two aren't mutually exclusive. They are winning the games they should the way they should. We couldn't say that about this team earlier in the season. This is the NFL. Yeah, it's fun to poke at the Seattle honks for "struggling" with Tampa, but that's what this league's about. Anyone can beat anyone else on any given Sunday.

I think Sunday's game is the best test for us and I'm glad it is on the road. If we play SF tough the league will take better notice. For right now, I would lean more toward option B, unfortunately.

Yes, we played SEA tough, but so did TB last week. I hope the cats play a physical game in SF and beats them up on defense. I think we have the tools in place to beat up other teams, sort of like a poor man's version of the old Ravens or maybe the Patriots when they beat up the Rams offense in the SB. Physical defense and a balanced offense (with emphasis on the run) leads to big game wins. With Dwill, JStew, Tolbert, and Cam... we really should be able to run the ball against anyone (not zone read, but the power eye). Throw in play action now and then, the sky's the limit.

The offense needs to stop trying to hit the homerun when it is 3rd and 2, though. I would take a Newton bootleg or rollout any day where he just needs to beat the corner. One man is not going to keep him from gaining a couple of yards. IMO.

That was then, I'm talking about the new and improved version of Carolina.

As a niners fan, I honestly don't know what to make of Carolina mostly because there are so many similarities with the 49ers. Blowing out a bunch of losing teams. Similar QBs, aging starters at RB/WR, mediocre secondary WR options, athletic TEs that are arguably the #1 receiving options. Both teams also have strong front 7s yet have been prone to weakness against the run at times. (CAR against BUF, SF against SEA and IND).

Having said that, I think Carolina struggles on run defense against guys who have the speed to get to the edge. Which explains why they've done well against guys like Lynch, Stacy, Mendenhall, FJax but seemed to struggle against Ellington, Spiller, ADP. I'm not expecting much from Gore this game but Hunter and Kap may gash them a few times. Kuechly has amazing intuition at LB and is a complete ballhawk though.

Ultimately I think the x factor in this game is the return of Mario Manningham. If he can actually gain some separation from the DBs it could be a huge bonus and force the panthers to not focus all their coverage on stopping Davis.

Cam has great tools for a QB, but he still strikes me as a "frontrunner" kind of guy. I'm not sure he has the resiliency to hang around in a mouth-puncher at Candlestick especially if the panthers are down early. 27-20 niners.

Spiller's the only one that had over 100 yards rushing in a game. Ellington and ADP both had a single run that padded their ypc stat but if you look at ADP for example...he had like 60 yards and one carry accounted for 30 of those. Same with Ellington...he had like 50ish yards rushing but one of those was 25 yards.

But regardless, I do believe this game will come down to the SF running game against the Carolina front 7 and how well they handle Davis at TE. These teams are very similar...will be a fun game to watch.

Hopefully we can get an answer to this in the playoffs

Kanas City(9-0) has scored 215 points and allowed 111 and not one team they have beat has a winning record.

Carolina (5-3) has scored 204 points and allowed 106 and they have not beat a team with a winning record yet, they take on SF this weekend.

I really enjoy watching the Panthers defense right now. They look like they might be able to make the playoffs this year. I know Rivera not very popular but he seems to have this defense turned around.
