So the weather is getting nicer and I've recently lost a crapload of weight. Nothing fits, so I went out with the wife to see what's what. A couple of thoughts on summer gear:
Cargo shorts are still everywhere. I don't get it. I'm not opposed to a slim pocket on the leg, but the puffy ones that you could smuggle a few bricks of hash in need to die.
Plaid shorts are still everywhere. I don't mind this. I definitely like the more subtle jobs (
example), but no brands are shying away from the standard madras type.
I felt a little stymied out there. I'm 39. Too old to wear a baseball cap over my ears, but too young to put on a Hawaiian shirt with pink marlins on it and drink out of a koozie. So, where's the middle ground? It seems preppy is really the only option, but it's a bit boring to be honest. The choices seem to be hipster plaid, preppy, old man Tommy, or surf punk. I still wear board shorts for the beach/pool, but that only gets you so far.
I will admit that Tommy Bahama did have some fairly
nice pieces (non-martini glass, solid colors, linen, etc.), but I don't know if my liking what I saw means I'm now officially old or TB has actually started to make some decent stuff. I did pick up some
Hurley board shorts and some
Paul Smith sneakers that I'm pretty happy with. Had to walk away from just about everything else.
So what are the non-kids-non-geezers rocking for the summer?
