THE FBG Fashion Thread :style: (1 Viewer)

So the weather is getting nicer and I've recently lost a crapload of weight. Nothing fits, so I went out with the wife to see what's what. A couple of thoughts on summer gear:

Cargo shorts are still everywhere. I don't get it. I'm not opposed to a slim pocket on the leg, but the puffy ones that you could smuggle a few bricks of hash in need to die.

Plaid shorts are still everywhere. I don't mind this. I definitely like the more subtle jobs (example), but no brands are shying away from the standard madras type.

I felt a little stymied out there. I'm 39. Too old to wear a baseball cap over my ears, but too young to put on a Hawaiian shirt with pink marlins on it and drink out of a koozie. So, where's the middle ground? It seems preppy is really the only option, but it's a bit boring to be honest. The choices seem to be hipster plaid, preppy, old man Tommy, or surf punk. I still wear board shorts for the beach/pool, but that only gets you so far.

I will admit that Tommy Bahama did have some fairly nice pieces (non-martini glass, solid colors, linen, etc.), but I don't know if my liking what I saw means I'm now officially old or TB has actually started to make some decent stuff. I did pick up some Hurley board shorts and some Paul Smith sneakers that I'm pretty happy with. Had to walk away from just about everything else.

So what are the non-kids-non-geezers rocking for the summer?

For hats I swear by Block HeadwearHere are two I recommendhttp://www.blockheadwear.com/shop/spring-summer/triblys/stanwix-large-natural.htmlhttp://www.blockheadwear.com/shop/spring-summer/triblys/knickerbocker.html
bought the 2nd one (first is sold out).Doesn't look good on my large skull, sending it back.Back to the drawing board.

Donno if you'd consider myself a kid at 25 but during summer, I don't wear non athletic shorts. It's basketball shorts or jeans when I go out. I really love these types of breathable shirts too for basketball/tennis/working out. Khaki shorts/cargos/plaid #### isn't my bag. I find them uncomfortable and mostly tacky.
You should just commit to jeans all the time then.Only time you should be wearing athletic shorts is when you're doing some type of athletic activity.

For better or worse summer stinks for men's :style:My wardrobe this summer will be a majority of plain v-neck tees in different colors (white, grey, black, blues). I'll pair them up with a rotation of 3 different shorts...

- flat front tan khaki shorts (no cargo pockets)

- dark grey flat front cotton type shorts (no cargo pockets)

- and then every now and again, I'll mix it up with these, with a simple solid colored v-neck tee (white, grey or black)

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk161/offdee/FBG%20Fashion/IMG_3095.jpg

My personal key to summer shorts is to size up one size than what I'd wear in jeans/pants....shorts in my opinion look better when they are streamlined in shape (no pleats, no cargo pockets, etc) but a tad oversized so a little more casual and comfortable looking.

 Not a knock on you, just an agreement with the bolded statement I suppose.

Yep, I agree. If it's below 70 degrees, I'm wearing jeans.

:goodposting: Got a few of these shirts yesterday (Blk Heather / India Ink) very comfortable

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/penguin-v-neck-heathered-cotton-t-shirt/3144984?origin=category&resultback=660

Tried Marc Jacob shorts but didn't fit me well and actually glad since it's overpriced but they looked great, not online but they were black/charcoal vertical stripe for 180 bucks.

So where are the comfortable V-Neck's where you are not spending $40 per shirt (Which probably costs less than $3 to make)?

Basketball shorts seriously not accepted? Maybe it's just campus-life influencing me, but I have never (in my life) worn anything other than basketball shorts for most of the summer - notable exceptions:

Khaki Shorts with a polo/nice t-shirt (not sure what to call them, but shaped like a tshirt, not a polo, but not a normal tshirt material either...) for going out with the girlfriend.

Swimsuit for swimming.

Slacks/Nice dark jeans for interview, depending on job.

Hell, I wear basketball shorts to class every day too. Comfortable, pockets for wallet keys phone, easy to join any activity if you see some friends while you're out...all purpose IMO.

Really not okay. I'm sure they're fine for class, but most of us are professionals that are not in a campus environment. If I showed up to a social gathering wearing basketball shorts and a t-shirt, most would just assume I came straight from the gym.Your day-to-day life is much different from ours.ETA - general rule of thumb - if it has an elastic waistband, it's a no.

You just made a lot of overweight people sad.

So where are the comfortable V-Neck's where you are not spending $40 per shirt (Which probably costs less than $3 to make)?
Check out American Rag (I picked some up at Macy's). Nice shirts for $10.
fwiw- if there's a Forever21 near you that has a guys' section, IME those are the best combo of cheapest/most-comfortable/stylish Ts around. Last time I went in there, they had bupkis though. I'd say H&M too, but I find their stuff not as comfortable and ripping/wearing-out after a couple washings. Diesel's always good too (but pricey), as long as you find that rare piece that doesn't have DIESEL blammoed all over it. and re: short-length... still on the above the knee side of things here in NYC (warm day today, and saw more than a handful of shorted guys). and lol at a college kid in b-ball shorts feeling the need to comment on style issues- not a knock against him, but I'm not getting the purpose there.

It was more of a "does this need to be something I think about?" type thing. Apparently I'm good

i feel a little weird shopping at a place like that because i'm almost 40. like i'm the guy-that-tries-too-too-hard-to-be-cool. i'd rather just hit the local gap for a $10 v-neck and call it a day.

:goodposting: you've definitely got to have the stomach to walk into that place. But for the most part, I don't see it as that cool- but definitely younger than you and I. I just like the quality of the t-shirts (soft) and styles previously available. Most of my Ts- long and short sleeved- are from there. Had somebody at a super highend boutique ask me if one of them was Rick Owens. my wife loled.

edit- or were you talking about H&M? I've tried shopping at the newish TopShop downtown and felt really old and annoyed there. plus, it ain't as cheap as it seems like it is in England.

i tend to think that topshop, h&m, and f21 traffick in the same styles even if the quality of the goods is different. i'm just not that big a fan, i guess. i used to be a big fan of zara but they dropped off several years ago. they seemed to have positioned themselves as a slightly more upscale version of H & m. i don't even bother with BR because the quality - maybe outside of their heritage line (who wants to pay that kind of cash for something from BR?) - is so suspect.

If you're in college, basketball shorts are okay for class. I wouldn't wear them everyday and definitely wouldn't wear them out to bars and stuff, but just for silly lectures and stuff...you're fine with them.

:goodposting: all the way around. The first three, the 80s plaid shirt thing I find really annoying- and omnipresent. I haven't looked at BR in a long, long time. Zara- totally agree there too... I keep going back in there, pushing past all the orthodox jewish women (wtf?) and finding absolutely nothing. It was such a standby for me, even just a couple years ago- but lately, bupkis. To be honest, I've relied on Gilt and Century21 for just about everything lately. Oh yeah- and my top-secret keep-to-myself store of the last year.

when i worked down around the WTC, i used to shop two places every week during my lunch: Century 21 for clothes and the Strand annex for books. i could count on one of them getting my money usually. there used to be a store by the South Street Seaport called Country Road that was from Australia and they had a really good line of clothes for men. i bought a lot of stuff from them but they closed up their US stores a few years ago and that bummed me out. i tend to find a designer/brand that i like and pick up stuff from them these days. a few years ago, for example, it was ted baker. in recent years it's been jon vavartos and jil sander. it's all pretty classic, simple stuff really.

I'll take a PM...As for Zara, the selection of clothes sold at the US stores has never been as good as that in Europe. It was a mainstay for me when I lived in Spain. I still get compliments on a coat from there that I bought in 2006. When I moved back to the states, I found the Zara in SF and thought I'd hit the jackpot... except the clothes there were definitely the wrong style for me compared with those at the European stores. There were some great brands in Spain when I lived there. Zara, Massimo Dutti, Springfield, Pull and Bear, and a bunch of others I can't recall. I think half of those are owned by the company that owns Zara LOL.

 that's definitely the trend. and in regards to swim trunks, no more board shorts fellas.
Alternative?ETA that I have to disagree. Board shorts are board shorts. They've been around forever. It's like saying no more t-shirts and jeans.

I love when I'm wearing something cheap and this happens. I remember at a house party a while back some girl spilled her drink on my shoes and I yelled out in disgust "oh no, all over my Pradas". She didn't recognize the sarcasm. She was very apologetic and said "wow, those are really nice shoes". She then got a paper towel, knelt down and wiped the moisture off the leather. They were a cheap pair of Kenneth Coles I've had for years.

I can find some links later but you'll notice at most of the trendy stores, the trunks being cut much shorter, about mid thigh. Not at the knee like board shorts. Same basic color schemes and patterns though.

Good point about Europe vs US for Zara. But also, Zara's US stuff- as Saintfool mentioned- has gone really down hill over the last few years. Used to be I could walk in there and find a bunch of things I'd happily buy... I can't remember the last time I've even tried something on there. And it's not like those other more youthful stores like H&M where I just find the style too young and idiotic- the style at Zara looks kinda like what I'd guess Banana Republic or J Crew would be like... boring, friday casual stuff. Not sure if that's what's happening in their Europe stores too...?

meh. skinny jeans were in most of the trendy stores for a minute and a half, too. never owned 'em. Barney's is selling a good mix of both.

Most of 'em are pretty dumb-looking.

Oh, lol at Sundeks going for $120.

this. all the shorts I've seen- swimming or walking- have been above the knee. I hate most Villebrequin, but that's the typical length I've been seeing.I kind of agree that board shorts are pretty much always ok on the beach- unless you're trying to be stylish and current. I've got a couple I still wear without sweating it... but I've given up on being current OR stylish.
