Great site that recently launched for men's :style:

http://www.mrporter.com

some great deals here
The 32 Essentials for Menhttp://www.mrporter.com/am/essentials.mrp

Wha'ts everyone's take on these? Some I agree with, some I don't.

One I'm considering giving a try is #27....wearing a beaded type of bracelet with a watch. I wouldn't wear 5 bracelets like in the pic shown, but like the :style: of one simple one with a watch. I like the way it takes a dressy watch and gives it a casual vibe.
Saw that this morning and it just seemed like a really stupid feature. It was the "we're selling all this stuff so let's include pretty much every article of clothing from gray suit to blue suit to tux to scarf to loafer to bracelet". Part of the "value added" of a good site is to help sort the wheat from the chaffe if that's what you're looking for. An article like this that encompasses everything as essential just seemed stupid to me.

J

On that note, where are the deals to be found on the mrporter site? I just glanced thinking it was a gilt.com type thing but it didn't look like it to me.

I agree Joe, seems pretty vague overall. Every guy should own a SWEATER!

I don't think there are any deals (like Gilt). The site is useful to follow trends from top designers and then be on the lookout for something similar at a place like Gilt where prices aren't so absurd.

I totally agree. Mr. Porter has barely come to life and it's already lost me. Socks and underwear are men's essentials? Thanks, internet! And $325 for this?!?!!

You mean $325 doesn't sound like a good deal for a YSL t-shirt? sorry, if I didn't make the sarcasm apparent in my original post. Mr. Porter is the men's version of the site that virtually every girl I know salivates over (net-a-porter). Top notch designers at top notch prices. The Porter buyers do a good job and and seem to only carry quality product so I don't need to rummage through a bunch of rubbish to find something I like. That being said, retail is for suckers so I just generally browse and wait for the stuff I like at 60-80% off.

Obviously it's to boost sales but I found it fairly informative on subtle details of various clothing articles (fit, style, etc) that many a FBG doesn't think twice about. Stuff like this:Eschew conspicuous distressing in favour of indigo jeans in slim, tapered shapes, with minimal branding.

Leave board shorts to the surfers, and trunks to the professional swimmers. Grown men need neither hide nor expose themselves. The two acceptable ends of the spectrum are brightly patterned shorts, cut loose enough to feel modest and falling about two-thirds of the way to the knee, and neat-fitting boxer shorts redolent of the 1950s.

The chinos of the early Noughties were baggy, shapeless things, but they now come in shapes straight off the catwalks of Milan and Paris, which means they are close-fitting, ankle-grazing and tapered.

 The more I look at that site, the more goofiness I see (or at least style that runs in a different direction than mine)- any time I see driving shoes, in every color yet- I cringe.

online it's Gilt. In NYC, it's sample sales. In general, it's seasonal sales (post Winter and Summer sales) - I like buying classic, quality gear off season as I don't really care if it's the latest and greatest thing.

Crap, read on one of the men's style blogs recently (sartorialist, sartorially inclined, one of those), that the best value in pea coats was classic used ones, ebay or somesuch. Had a good guide on how to ID the best ones, but can't find it in my history.

You just got to make sure with peacoats that they fit you well. Nothing worse than an oversized peacoat all draped on somebody like a Snuggie.

Finally getting around to replacing sunglasses I destroyed awhile back.

Bought these

Hope they fit my huge skull.

classic enough to not become dated?

Aviators tend to go in and out of style... but they're on the way back in currently, so you'll be fine for 2/3 years IMHO.ETA: I see offdee disagrees. I'll admit they never really go all the way out, but there are definitely times they're more in than usual.

I think the change in :style: for aviators goes in and out more with the young crowd. But, once you hit 30+ aviators are a solid staple. Simple and classic.

Oh yeah, you're good. Basic Aviators will never really go out of :style:
Yes. Yes they will. There have been times they have be "in" and time where if you were caught wearing them you were a dootchbeg.
how many months away are we from the dootchbeg zone?Figure I can throw them in a drawer and wait it out once we hit that point. I've got a sweet pair of these sitting in reserve ;)

 I have no idea when they will be in or out but they're not always in.

Aviators have better longevity than Wayfarers, that's for sure, which seem either that they're on the way in or on the way out all the time.

Also, I find true driving shoes pretentious. Finally, the stuff on mrporter is typically way too preppy for me. Not enough edge, but definitely has classic looks updated for today. I'm sure my wife would love me in that stuff, but I need something a bit more... gilt is better in this regard.

The Mrporter site is ridiculous. $445 for a short-sleeve white shirt. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

ETA: $545 t-shirt No, seriously. This place is a joke right? Like The Onion?
Why are you guys complaining about the price of premium items? If you can't afford it, move on. They have plenty of various options depending on what you want to spend. It's only $37 for this timeless classic.

Premium items? It's sweats and a t-shirt, slick.

Hate to use an old cliche, but there are people starving in Africa.
$485 SWEATPANTS
It's not cheap to have the drop crotch feature.
Good point. I'd gladly pay an extra $465 for sweatpants that make it look like I dropped a load in my drawers.

I see Rudi... wait a sec... Rudi?! got this one right?Aviators are not on the way back in- they've been back for a long while now which means they'll be heading out before too long. And Rudi is totally right- it was pretty much moustache-wearing motorcycle cops who were the only guys wearing aviators for a while there.

I thought linking to a $37 wifebeater and calling it a "timeless classic" would set off all sarcasm detectors. I was wrong.

Wasting money is relative. I think $435 for a t-shirt is absolutely ridiculous but I recently purchased a $135 Maison Martin Margiela shirt to see if there really was any difference. Unfortunately, I can't go back. Wearing a $12 T-shirt from the Gap feels like I'm walking around in sandpaper.

Stay away from the wire frame aviators, Goose. I got this pair of Paul Smith aviators pair and love them.

Would any of you fashionistas care to tell me why it is frowned upon to where a black shirt w/brown pants? The wife gave me the "Really?" look recently as I was getting ready for work but she would not explain.
