Need a good, comfortable, semi-stylish shoe/boot for a mid-winter trip to Europe. We'll be doing a ton of walking, and I imagine it will be pretty damn cold. Don't want to bring a ton of shoes in the luggage, so needs to be versatile.

Like the convenience of zappos VIP if you can recommend something from there.

I'd rec something basic and versatile like Redwing Chukkas: http://www.mrporter.com/product/383167
Suede shoes in winter/snow is not a good idea. Will look like garbage after 2 wears.

Look into Timberland Earthkeepers. More streamlined and :style: version of the usual clunky Timberland boots.

I have the black pair shown below, and like them a lot. Kind of shizkicker boots that look better as they get more worn and scuffed up which is good for a winter boot. They weren't easy to find on the net though when I got them about 2 months ago.

dude, he's probably walking around Paris not the Swiss Alps.

I was just looking at those Timberlands. Can get my size from amazon for $130... seems like a great deal and they are well reviewed.

Nice GB. You thinking the black ones? Solid staple casual boot that looks great with jeans and I actually relish in beating them up to give some character...should last a good 5 years and will never go out of :style: Overall pretty comfortable...I just got one of those insert heel pads for some extra cushioning in that area.

I personally think suede shoes in general are a pain in the ###. Look great for a couple wears and then just start to look ragged. Any kind of weather elements beats them up quikcly. I wore a suede pair out last weekend to a downtown party....perfect weather, but still took a beating from crowds stepping on them, spilled beverages, etc.

The problem is beat up suede looks like you're wearing a wet dog on your feet.

Looking to pick up a couple pair of dress oxfords and have a question or two.

Plain Oxford or Cap Oxford:

What's the difference? (I don't mean visually, as I can look at them and see the difference; I'm wondering which way is best.)

One black and one brown?

Thinking of going with Cole Haan's Air Madison Plain Oxford, just waiting for the price to drop a bit first.

ETA - Looking for shoes that are not just leather soles as they're too bloody slick to walk in.

Plain vs. cap toe isn't really a "best" it's just what you visually prefer. I'd say cap toe is a little less formal and can tend to be slightly more :style:. Regular oxfords tend to look a little more dressy and classic. It's really what you're looking for.

Can never go wrong with a high quality black dress shoe. For brown I'd suggest a more lighter brown/tan color....more versatile and tend to look richer than your usualy poop brown shoe.

Like this.

In regards to slick bottoms. Shoe places have stick on bottoms....kind of like sandpaper. Also lightly scoring the bottoms of your shoes with an exacto knife can give you some traction.

Anyone ever try this? I'm intrigued: http://www.trunkclub.com/?page=video
Interesting. The no membership fee and free shipping both ways are really the key. Just have them send stuff to you regularly, and most likely just ship most of it back and no charges whatsoever. If you find something you like, than bonus. I may consider giving it a try, to see what gets sent to me.

But, I'd imagine most here would balk at the prices of pieces. Although, it would be like shopping at Goodwill for Major.

Similar pricing to high-end retailers

Trunk Club is a premium-clothing service with prices similar to top-tier shops. For example, denim prices are $170–$250, casual shirts $100–$200, and sweaters $100–$300.

I just signed up for that Trunk Club. Don't really see a downside.

Around here it's impossible to buy decent clothes at Brick & Mortar stores....need to get generic garbage at the mall or take the train to Chicago. All I do for clothes and shoes at this point is online shopping, so why not have somebody else do it for me.

I'll report back with any experiences.

I would imagine for the shoes, you would have gone to the store's B&M first to make sure you like them, they look good and they fit?

Not usually. If I see something I like online I do a little looking to see if they run big/small and then just hope for the best. I do a lot of ordering and returning if not up to standards. Most places around me don't carry the styles and brands I'm looking for. It's a little pain in the ### with returning online stuff, but usually online can find sales or get sales tax removed so the return costs and hassles are offset a bit. Also worth it to have styles that joe shmo across the hall can't get at the mall.

Yeah, when I dipped into the pricing guidelines, it looked a little high for me. But, I could use a :style: update. Appreciate you trying this out, if it's legit I might give them a spin for a trunk and see how it goes.

After you sign up, your stylist gives you a call to discuss further what your :style: is and talk about what you're looking for. I actually already received a call (they are in Chicago), but was in the middle of a work meeting so couldn't answer it.

Seems like a great place to let them know you're looking for some high quality base staples....jeans, sportcoats, shoes in particular. Sounds like they'll only send you what you're asking for, and whenever you ask for it. You can ask for one trunk, try it all on, return it all and have absolutely no cost to you. If you're not impressed you just never request to be sent another trunk (trunks of clothes only get sent to you when you specifically request it on the site). The only downside I can see is if get a bunch of clothes that you really like but are always scared off by the price. If the price ranges they list don't scare you, than seems like a no-brainer to try out at least.

As noted earlier, better to pay a little extra for these quality base staples as you can wear them over and over for a long period of time and the byproduct is that it will make all of your other cheaper shirts, etc. look more quality.

By the way, my Trunk stylist, Sue, is a hot little Indian princess. They give you her direct email and phone number to contact her at any time. :goggles:

offdee is just being a bit of a dandy....it happens often with these fashion divas in Wisconsin.

With Sunday of ACL being canceled, we had some time driving back to Dallas and stopped at the outlet mall in Round Rock. Left with quite a bit of stuff for not much money.

Perry Ellis was the highlight for deals, but that may have been at least partially due to it being our first stop. Picked up a few button downs for $14 each. I think it was this one in various colors/patterns. Also decided to try their jeans for the first time, since they fit well. Will see how they hold up, though for 30 bucks they really don't have to last long.

Not rescheduled, though some bands did pop-up shows around town. ACL is giving refunds for Sunday. SOL if you bought on craiglist or StubHub or something.

Refunds will be issued automatically by check from Front Gate Tickets within three weeks. One-third of ticket price will be refunded to all ticket buyers based on original ticket price paid, and will be mailed to the billing address on the original order.

week 1 was def the shark move....had a bunch of first time ACLers who weren't so impressed with Week 2. I think it prob lacked all the energy the first one packed not to mention the Sunday weather.

Solid, looking forward to your review on Trunk Club offdee. So far it sounds good.

I'm going to do my late-fall/Winter clothes shopping in November at the new Uniqlo store that opened a driveable distance from me in North Jersey. Will test it out and let you guys know how it goes. At least need to get sizing before I start ordering online from them.

Only thing I'm a little leery on with the Trunk Club is the prices. Pretty much every piece starts out at $100 and goes up from there. She said trunks can range from a total cost of $500 up to $1,600..what would I be comfortable with. I don't mind paying for quality clothes but I have my limits. Again, unless you keep it than no charges whatsoever...I'm curious to see what ends up coming.

Uniqlo is great for the price. They had a deal on cashmere sweaters last year for $60. Lots of nice colors and basics with a slimmer, modern cut.

Awesome, yeah I plan on stocking up around mid-November.

btw, speaking of all this trunk stuff, one of my friends helps run a pretty successful company that provides a similar service in SF. I don't think they specialize in the cheap, slob FBG market but good for those seeking quality/service. I'll get the name for you geezers.

Trunk Club experience so far:

Received my trunk at my doorstep and it had 7 items to try on. Cheapest item was around $90 (sweater with 10% cashmere) and most expensive item was a pair of chino type pants for $189. All very high quality and nice stuff. For the guys that are willing to spend a little coin on some base staple pieces to get their wardrobe a solid revamp, definitely give this a try. For me, I already have a lot of solid base staples so at this point I'm just looking for pieces that I really like a lot and different from what I already have.

I ended up not keeping anything this time around, but they say first time is to get your sizing and style down and to give some detailed feedback. Returning the stuff was a breeze...they give you the prepaid FedEx sticker and tape to reseal the box, just need to take it to FedEx or call for a pickup. All shipping to you and returning is Free so really no downside in trying it out and hopefully finding some quality pieces.

Below is copied and pasted my feedback to my stylist...

----

Hi Sue, tried everything on and unfortunately will be returning everything. Hopefully with thoughts below will help for any future orders....

- Maroon Life After Denim sweater: Was close to keeping this one, but just decided against it. Just didn't seem special enough to me for the cost. Fit good though and fabric felt nice.

- Adriano Goldschmeid navy pants: Love the feel of these, very comfortable....but just too big overall. A 32 waist probably a better fit, but would prefer a more tapered ankle than the wide straight legs. (Also too long as well...understand can get them hemmed, but just letting you know a size down in length of these is probably better) I really like that they have the soft feel of chinos but the styling of jeans....specifically the actual back pockets and not just the slit pockets like most chinos (I hate the slit back pocket look). Didn't mind the navy color either. Feel I'd get more wear out of them if they were black though. I've been on the search for a good pair of black soft pants with all that I'm describing above. (I've seen some cool pics of cargo pants like this with really streamlined side pockets....not the big bulky cargo pockets like from 10 years ago though)

- Life After Denim purple plaid button down: Good fit. Kind of like the sweater, just not special enough for the price tag

- Billy Reid flannel: Good fit. I like the spread collar as that is something a little different that I don't already have. Wasn't feeling the color combo I guess.

- Grey Gant sweater: Too tight. Not a huge fan of crew neck sweaters personally. Prefer V-necks

- Jack Spade red thick flannel: Good fit. Liked the double pockets on front. Color combo and fabric thickness made it too "lumberjack" looking for my tastes

- Scott James mint plaid button up: Good fit. least favorite thing in the box though....not a fan of the light pastel color at all.

Awesome, offdee. Thanks for posting all of this. I think I'm going to give this a shot myself soon. I like the way that you're doing this in trying on everything in the first trunk and giving them precise feedback on the fit/style of all items for the future. Will probably do the same myself.

Having just turned 30 about 2 months ago, I think it is time for a weekend bag update, and I want to go to leather. Starting ballpark being what I see in the link in quality and price. I love light tan bags (my work laptop bag/briefcase is light tan, and I've gotten some nice compliments on it over the time I've had it). I think my max here would be $400-500 absolute tops. Any of you guys have a specific brand/ style that you've had good experience with currently or in the past?
