THE FBG Fashion Thread :style: (1 Viewer)

Just bought a pair of these at Academy Sports.com for $59 + free ship/no sales tax, Amazon pictures are better and more reviews. Wanted a slip on that was nicer than sandals/flip flops, but casual enough to wear with khaki shorts and a nice tshirt/polo in the summertime and not too flashy (had to talk myself out of a $170 pair of Lacoste's, nice but ended up not having my size anyways): http://www.amazon.com/Sperry-Top-Sider-Pilot-Tan-US/dp/B0059CW1VK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434655420&sr=8-1&keywords=Sperry+Men%27s+Pilot+Casual+Shoes&pebp=1434655422046&perid=0PD8T78DW2ZHQA8MPEA5

ETA: I'm 31, so I retired all cargo shorts to Goodwill and am moving to limit sandals and sneaks to quick trips to the store and the beach at this point.
That is the definition of a dad shoe. Go easy on the crew socks of any color with those as well.

Anyone have experience with Humvee (yeah, I know) watches?

There's one on sale at local sporting goods store for under $20 (originally $65) and I need a new watch. Shrug.

I thought they looked nice, not too flashy. Guess I really dialed it down a bit too much. Free returns, ugh.

What would you do with this?

Thinking of getting a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, tortoise shell, green polarized lenses. Big mistake or rippingly cool? Honest answers appreciated. If so, 55's or 52's for lenses?

In the camp of very cool. How big is your head is really the determining factor on size. Go to the mall and try them on.

Thanks for the feedback. Tried on both sizes, and both look good. The woman there seemed to think the 55's, but I like smaller lens sizes. Probably ask another opinion or two at the store when I go again. (It's a convoluted story. I own them, but they put the store lenses in instead of the Ray-Ban ones, which are what I ordered. They have to replace them at this point. But I can return the entire pair because of this, so it's why I'm asking.)

If the 55's look good on you (round or blocky head helps), I'd go bigger, if you have an oval shaped head like me, go 52.

Thanks, NV. :hifive: I can't figure out if I have a round head or an oval one. Square is like a Ryan Getzlaf face with a hard jawline, right?

I think I'm a tweener, and that they'll both be okay.

Thanks for all your help, guys. Went with 55's, and they look great. Got green polarized authentic Ray-Ban lenses, but they omitted the logo, which certifies authenticity. But they showed me the GR-15s (the authentic lenses) and the store ones, showed me how they sent them out, offered to send them back, and told me they'd have the logo pronto. But I'm thinking, after watching Ballers and Dwayne Johnson and his assistant, that the logo...

is no go.

They did it right and were on top of everything. I'll accept and move on. Cheap sunglasses should look like cheap sunglasses, ZZ Top and Billy Gibbons you mother####ers.

And No Logos. (Unless it's the Polo pony, which sets off the color scheme?)

Learned something about the Ray-Ban process or a weird trademark farming out, at least.

How are you slobs doing anyway? I've been a little busy with life but Im here if you need me. Feel free to ask any questions as it pertains to fashion and style. All the questions about how I pull so many offdee 8s and 9s will go unanswered.

Anyone with advice on a black casual sport coat? Something to wear to work parties, etc...not meetings.

Something like this:

https://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/sportcoatsandvests/cotton/PRDOVR~A6345/A6345.jsp
I'll have to look into that. Not as many black sport coats out there like navy or grey. Cotton or Wool?
I ended up going with it...needed it for a casual work trip (All Star Game)...was a good fit. Cotton...lightweight...informal, but dressy enough. Held up well to travel.

Ok guys...these oxfords or these boots for wearing with these trousers and generally being a versatile wardrobe piece.

What's ideal is a heel like the model is wearing but I need something warm that accommodates dress socks.

About a thousand pages ago you guys helped me pick a dress

those boots need to be worn with leggings, or maybe a knee-length skirt. not those trousers.

my .02

They would be, but they also be worn with the trousers. When you wear a dressy bootie (second one is more dressy) they're supposed to just peak out. You can't actually tell that it's a boot/bootie.

Given those two choices, the boots.

I'd prefer a taller skinnier heeled pump personally.

That does technically look best - my feet get way too cold in the winter though.

I have to go to my wife's office Christmas party next week. I'm guessing it's a smart casual type of affair. It's at a hotel. Probably half of the men there have banged my wife at least once this year, so naturally I want to look my best.

I'm built like an NFL tight end, tall and broad with imposing shoulders and thick, powerful buttocks. Skinny jeans wouldn't look good. Every year I work from home, I'm more out of touch with how to dress my age. I want to look wealthy yet DGAF. I'm not at all the flashy type with dumb hats and blazers. Help a brother out TIA.

Need some suit advice...

Work as a real estate lawyer so the suit I need doesn't have to be Big Law level or anything like that. Also fairly young and also a pretty small dude so trying to get a figure an idea on what suit to buy as opposed to just going to Milton's off the rack.

My two options I am looking at are, http://us.suitsupply.com/en_US/suits/napoli-navy-plain/P2778I.html?cgid=Suits... The Napoli from Suit Supply

and the JCrew Ludlow, https://www.jcrew.com/mens_feature/TheSuitShop/PRDOVR~11707/99103713422/11707.jsp. Prices are a bit different but not a big issue.

My main question is going to be fit and style. The Ludlow has a pretty thin lapel that seems like it could go out of style while the Napoli has a bit thicker lapel than I might like since I'm a small guy at like 5'7 140.

Any opinions on the two differing suits? Just want something I can wear if I need to wear a suit, since I don't always wear my jacket every day but also would look good if I went to a wedding etc.

if I were getting a suit id probably go into a store and have it tailored. brooks brothers makes some decent suits in that price range

If you're smaller shouldn't you go with a thinner lapel? Similar build.... 5'6", 148.

I like the J. Crew better just because of the thinner lapel. Though I don't own either suit. I bought a couple BAR III suits from Macy's since you can usually get them on sale for about $350 for jacket and pants. I only need suits for weddings, holiday parties, etc.

As long as it's made of 100% wool for the outer shell I don't think there's a huge difference AS LONG AS YOU GET IT TAILORED.

Smaller lapels generally work better with a slimmer build but the worry is JCrew is a bit too far to the slim end and vice versa with Suit Supply since they are over 3inches and thats generally the highest I might like..... I would do Brooks Brothers but the 1000 price tag is a bit over the price range.... Also I would be tailoring of course.

Isn't there a SS shop in Boston? One thing I would consider and take advantage of is their return policy.

Get a brooks brothers suit. They are well made and will last you for many years. Not sure what your timing is but, they have a few sales a year that can cut down on the cost. Of the two you listed, I like the J-crew suit better. Have you tried Hugo Boss? Quality has slipped this year but you can still find a 350-500 suit at Norstrom Rack. Don't use Nordstrom's tailors. http://www.hugoboss.com/us/james%2Fsharp%27-regular-fit%2C-super-100-striped-wool-suit/hbna50279058.html?cgid=71234&dwvar_hbna50279058_color=420_Blue#prefn1=mpg&srule=sale-categories&prefv1=Suits&sz=96&start=1

SuitSupply make suits that are incredibly well-made but even moreso at their pricepoint. Most off-the-rack suits from places like Nordstrom (and NR) will simply not have the quality. Spend $700-$1K on BB but you won't look any better than you would with SS.

A wealthy NFL TE. Sounds so sexy

The Ludlow is a nice basic suit. Go for that one. Get it tailored as needed to make sure it fits perfect

Unfortunately no. I don't mind returning them in mail etc since it's free but can't try anything on since none in Mass.

Has anyone tried Trunk Club?
Overall decent yelp scores - but some very telling bad ones.

Trunk Club seems like a great service on the surface. They have a large group of fashionista's who can help pick out great clothes to make you look and feel good.

After three weeks, I cancelled my account because the service was such a disaster.

Firstly, the fashionista's are mostly 22 year old girls who may be fashionable, but they are also immature. This is cute at first but gets old fast when you have service issues like I had. My stylist was had been there about four months. At one point, she became completely unresponsive. I was left to call into general customer service to try to resolve a long list of problems with their service. That's not good service, especially considering a just bought $4k worth of merchandise from them.

I was eventually handed off to a "manager" who was an interesting guy, but I wouldn't call him helpful. His picture should be on Wikipedia under "passive aggressive behavior."

Here are some of the problems I experienced.

- Unexpected, hidden charges for tailoring. This came out of the blue. Even when explained, the charges didn't make any sense.

- $500 designer shoes that I couldn't return after I learned they were causing blisters. Double ouch.

- Trunks being sent to me without authorization, sometimes charged right away and sometimes not.

- Hostile management team after I requested a different stylist. I tried several times to rectify the situation but to no avail. The managers aren't any more mature or experienced than the stylists are.

- Tailored pants were sent to me after I asked and confirmed that I could pick them up so I would have them in time for a meeting.

- Tailor was incompetent. My pants were way too long and were nothing like they were measured and marked to be when I had my fitting with the tailor.

When I asked my stylist about these issues she just said, "I don't know!" Nice.

It's my understanding there is massive turnover among the stylist team. 40% leave within the first year. So, even if you find someone you like, chances are they won't be there for long.

The word on the street is Nordstrom's purchased Trunk Club for a lot of money. For their sake, I hope it was an earn out. I didn't see anything that couldn't be easily replicated. It seems likely Nordstrom paid too much for this business.

In a final act of desperation, I reached out to the Founders of Trunk Club, hoping to connect with fellow entrepreneurs. No response either. Founders usually care more than what they've demonstrated in this case. I can only assume they have checked out and are working on their next startup.

In summary, Trunk Club is a pretty face with no substance behind it. If you want to talk to pretty girls, then go there. If you want a true fashion partner that will listen and understand your needs, look elsewhere.

Yeah, I read that one...and a few others. Besides Yelp I found some helpful reviews of the actual stylist I'm meeting with next week. I've found a ton of reviews that gave first/last name of various stylists and she seems solid (I did this before I responded & agreed to come to the clubhouse on Madison Ave.)

Seems like very good quality, pricey and varying quality of service.

Anyway, I'll report back. Expecting to drop at least $2K and possibly as much as 8-10K on this experience, so hopefully I enjoy it.

If anyone else has tried it, would love to hear how it went for you.
