The Gates Conundrum (1 Viewer)

you guys are killing me... so many opinions... I can't decide what to do. I have TonyG and Gates but can pick up McMichael if I decide to wait till monday. I am thinking of waiting till after the early games. If i am down by a lot, I'll wait and be hopeful for Gates, if it's close or I am up, I'll roll with TonyG as the safer option. thoughts?

In my league, Gates has outscored the next closest tight end by FORTY points. He's near Roddy White on a ppg basis. In my mind, if there's a 50 percent chance he'll play you should take that gamble. Because McMichael is likely to offer as much upside as any other option if Gates is out, but if Gates plays he's essentially like starting a *running back* at the tight end spot.

In my fairly standard scoring league, Gates has scored as much as Ahmad Bradshaw, Jamaal Charles, Steven Jackson, and Tomlinson (within 5 points either way).

He's outscored Michael Turner, Ray Rice, and quite a few other big names. AND he's missed one game.

Going with Jimmy Graham, maybe it's because it would be a fun surprise, but I'm too tempted by the upside. Just not confident in McMichael and just doesn't sound good for Gates.
same here.

I am going to wait and see if we hear anything later today...then prob end up plugging in Celek if nothing is determined before tomorrow. I honestly don't expect to hear anything until tomorrow...so I will be rolling with Celek's underperforming butt tonight (don't take that the wrong way)

I waited for Gates and now am stuck with him or get a zero. Need 20 points to win...hope I see 85 in the endzone a couple of times tonight.

I hedged on Gates and put in Pettigrew, couldn't risk it.

Now I got SD Def vs Rivers with a 4 point cushion... Instead of Gates/SD Def with a 10 point deficit.

If Gates plays tonight, would Champ Bailey be on him? Given SD's dearth at WR, I would assume that Bailey would see time v. Gates. I would doubt that the same would hold true with McMichael if Gates sits out. I'm starting to think that giving Gates another week off might be the best scenario for the Gates/McMichael owners.

Dearth? M. Floyd and VJ should be playing tonight. No, I don't think Champ will be covering a hobbled Gates.

:excited: Jackson can't play until next week.

I'm actually glad I decided to roll with the McMichael/Gates option yesterday. Every TE I *would have* started yesterday (Boss, Pettigrew, Graham, Watson) would have left me with a defeat already. I'm down, but not quite out yet.

Here's to hoping (if Gates doesn't go) that McMichael picks up another 2 TE night like last time.

No VJ tonight, no Naanee again either. Just saying because I know Bailey has matched up against Gates in the past. It would not shock me if he did tonight.

Hmmm, my opponent picked up McMichael. So it looks like the only way I can win is if Gates decides to give it a go and then after a play or two decides that was a mistake.

So I'm saying there's a chance.

1 in a million.
Does it seem like a good idea to anyone for his opponent to play McMichael no matter what? Even if Gates plays, the odds that Gates gets injured quickly and can't go and puts up a zero are larger than the odds that McMichael either becomes the last minute starter, ends up filling in for an injured Gates, or catches a few balls as a sub even if Gates plays most of the game. Thoughts? Seems insane, but even if Gates is going it might make sense to play McMichael if you only need a couple of points...

TE Kory Sperry just signed by the Chargers from the practice squad. This should probably tell us something about tonight.

Does Kory Sperry being signed to the roster have an effect on Gates/McMichael? I'm thinking this means Gates is most likely out and if you handcuffed McMichael then he will be lucky to get 0-3 fpts since Sperry is a more of an athletic type tight end than a blocking TE.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes that "indications" are that Antonio Gates (feet) will try to play Monday night.

Not really what I want as I've already lost this week but maybe he makes it through the game OK.

I have Gates and McMichael... and I would rather Gates sit out. It's horrible to have to put him in when he probably won't be worth much or make it through the game if he does actually play.

Just throwing this thought out there...I've had LT and Gates for years in my keeper league and this Gates injury going into a Monday Night game reminds me a lot of when LT had one of his sprained ankles two years ago. For the entire week leading up to the game he didn't practice but was listed as questionable. The entire 7 hour pregame on ESPN had Michelle Tafoya on the sideline talking about how LT would be limited, could barely walk, and that Darren Sproles would not be returning kicks because he was expecting the bulk of the carries at running back. When the game was over LT had 100 yards and 2 TDs.

Norv has played the injured card before.

All that said, I have Gates/McMichael and am leaning heavily on this board for insight before 8:30 tonight. Thanks in advance.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Chargers TE Antonio Gates, who is listed as questionable with a foot injury for Monday night's game against Denver, could try to play against the Broncos. The paper reports that "indications are that he will try to play." Gates did not practice all week leading up to the Week 11 game. The Chargers could need Gates with third-string TE Kris Wilson dealing with a bad back. The Chargers signed TE Kory Sperry off the practice squad Monday since Wilson was also limited in practice Thursday and Friday and did not practice Saturday. He is also listed as questionable. If Gates is out then Randy McMichael would start against the Broncos.

(Updated 11/22/2010).

Fantasy Analysis

We're surprised but encouraged by the news that Gates could play. He missed the previous game in Week 9 against Houston with the foot injury and has struggled to practice during the bye in Week 10 and then all week leading up to the game. You're going to have to monitor CBSSports.com leading up to the game when the inactives are released to determine who is starting between Gates or McMichael. If Gates is starting then we would recommend using him in all leagues because even at less than 100 percent he should still be able to make a positive impact. If Gates is out then McMichael would be a quality replacement since he had two touchdowns against the Texans.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) is expected to play in the team's Week 11 game against the Denver Broncos Monday, Nov. 22, according to NFL Network's Stacy Dales. Our view: Gates has played through foot injuries before, so this news isn't surprising. We'll see if Gates can be effective tonight against the Broncos. Denver's linebackers struggle in coverage, so it could be a big night for the Chargers tight end.
So we're all rolling with Gates tonight?

I was hoping he'd sit. Now I'm forced to choose between him and Tolbert in a few leagues that are ppr and 1.5 ppr TE. I think I will be conservative and roll with Tolbert. Guess I'll tune in and see him have a monster game now. Just can't take the risk...

@sdutChargers Decision almost made on Antonio Gates. Barring major shift, he will not play. He's Gates, though, so don't rule it out.

Looks like a no go

As an owner I am happy about this. I'd rather see him sit out even next weeks game to ensure he is as close to 100% before he tries to play on it.

WTF does this mean?

Sources tell FOX31 Sports' Josina Anderson that Antonio Gates (foot) "expressed displeasure" after comparing additional information regarding his injury with his original prognosis.Gates clearly isn't pleased that his injury may be harder to play through than originally thought. More information regarding the severity of the injury should come out as the week goes on, but owners need to be prepared as if Gates will not play in Week 12. His status is extremely cloudy at the moment.Source: Josina Anderson on Twitter

After all this a freaking goose egg from the McMichael. So much for Mcmichael being a good backup. Gates better be back for my playoffs.

Yup, well I don't think anyone expected him to be a good backup but limited options on Monday night. That being said, a zero is pretty bad. He was targeted on the first scoring drive of the day but he couldn't convert. Apparently, this is a situation where it's not the scheme that generates viable players as the TE is not interchangeable like with the Colts. This is not a TE oriented offense, it is a Rivers oriented offense. Gates must be getting targeted because he's just a great receiver and Rivers is a great QB who tries to get the most out of every play. Hitting below average TEs for low yardage is just not as good as throwing to talented backs who can make plays or throwing deep. When Gates leaves this offense, I don't expect the next TE to be viable based on opportunity unless they draft someone immensely gifted.

Looks like Jimmy Graham turkey day time! Wish I started him yesterday - fell for the questionable tag -
Me too. I think I'll be cutting McMichael for Graham after this week.
I like the Graham idea, but it is doubtful that we'll know for sure whether or not Gates will play Sunday night by Thanksgiving Day. I'm more tempted to scoop Winslow up off of the wire than Graham. Either way, I'm not going to roll with McMichael.

Graham is going to have a productive game -- he's been getting end zone targets the last two games, and is gaining Brees' confidence more and more each outing.

This does not sound good.
No proof, but: I don't care how tough Gates has been throughout his career ... smells like he's out for the remainder of the fantasy season. The real-life Chargers will keep him off IR and hang on to him for the playoffs, but that does his FFB owners little good.

So you would view his chances of playing this week to be real slim...?

Only my personal speculation, but yes. I don't see how an injury goes from "serious enough to sit out multiple weeks" to "A-OK ready to roll" in 7 days. I'd wager Gates never has a full week of practice the rest of this season (including playoffs).Compare it to Reggie Bush. He could've played Sunday (judging by the broadcast video of his pre-game workout), but Sean Payton wanted him to be as healthy as possible going into both the short week and the eventual stretch run. That's not what happened with Gates -- he tried his foot yesterday, and simply couldn't go at all.

Keller has super sucked the past two weeks for me while Gates has been out. This news is not good and the options after Gates game are pretty nubby with SF and Arizona. I am dipping my toe in the thanksgiving Jimmy Graham gravy methinks.

:goodposting:Rivers (and the Chargers' offense) favors throwing to the open guy - whoever that is.You didn't notice McMichael was limping the entire game? He tweaked his hammy pretty good early on and played through it, but couldn't really run patterns. He stayed in because Wilson was in worse shape and the only other TE they had was a rookie they brought up from the practice squad yesterday. Had McMichael been healthy I'm sure he would have gotten 5 targets or so.

I agree that Gates is done for the rest of the FF season. No way does he play next week either. I think they try and get him healthy for the real playoffs.

Graham have any long term potential or is he toast once Shockey is back?

Graham has tons of long-term potential. I think he's more skilled and FAR more athletic than Schockey right now.
