The Great 2020 All Time Television Draft: The Simpsons is judged the greatest show of all time (2 Viewers)

Luke Spencer was definitely ABC's top soap guy for a while there. But my mom always watched the CBS soaps :D

Anyone else remember how there used to be separate magazines for the different network daytime soaps? Like there used to be an "ABC Soaps", "NBC Soaps" and a "CBS Soaps" magazine.
Yeah my mom was abc. All My Children IIRC.

1971-1990 Leading Man Drama Rankings (cont.)

The Tippy-Top Tier But This Time Without Consensus

3 - James "Sonny" Crockett (14 pts)

I dunno; I always liked the other guy better.  But this is another that launched a huge movie career, as well remakes, films, and unfortunate fashion iconography.

(Individual rankings - 14/13/12/10)

2 - Dr. R. Quincy (15 pts)

Maybe that "7" score is someone pissed that they never got to learn his first name.

(Individual rankings - 16/16/15/7)

1 - Frank Furillo (16 pts)

As close as we could get to unanimity in this highly differentiated category is the complex, imperfect heart and soul of the best TV drama of the era.

(Individual rankings - 16/16/15/15)
Funny I was one of the “low” scores for Furillo.

I’m curious how well it holds up. It was a juggernaut back in its prime.
I've been watching some old reruns and yeah, it's dated, but still good.

I am amazed how many well known actors were guest stars on it - Laurence Fishburne, Frances MacDormand and Cuba Gooding Jr, just to name a few.

Per the master spreadsheet, here are the open categories that still need judges (with some adds from me for ones I know volunteered recently:

71-90 drama - “The Krista 4”

71-90 lead man drama - “The Krista 4”

71-90 lead woman drama - “The Krista 4”

91-20 lead man comedy - OPEN

91-20 lead man drama - OPEN

91-20 lead woman comedy - OPEN

91-20 lead woman drama - OPEN

Children’s - Dr Doofenshmirtz

Variety/Live - OPEN

Mom - OPEN

Dad - OPEN

Miniseries - OPEN

Finale - OPEN

Action - OPEN

Foreign - OPEN

News - Don Quixote

Villain - OPEN

We need more volunteers.

I don’t mind consolidating another category or two like I did for the supporting characters. I’ll wait before jumping in for another since I’ve already done a few.

I remember how controversial it was that there was a scene with an unmarried couple (Furillo/Davenport) sharing a bath together. Such simpler times.

Although I like the characterization   , I'm not sure why we're on this list?  We are set for judging and in fact two of these are complete already?

I was just listing the ones listed as open on the spreadsheet and then noting which ones were taken that I was aware of.  Not sure who is updating the judging list - basically some housekeeping for the spreadsheet.

the dialogue & characterizations seem a little forced now because it was so focused on breaking the Dragnetness of the cop show and establishing a menagerie of individuals, and it does suffers from having established so many tropes now inherent to the procedural that its own innovations appear hacky today. still watchable. i rose & fell w that gang, so there is some reunion value, but it plays better in memory than on screen

Good Lord. I think I was at least a 5 point outlier on about 2/3 of these

I shudder to think what I've done to the Ladies' list.

I considered a few names when it came time to pick 71-90 Leading Man Drama. Others that I considered were Doogie Howser and Coach Ken Reeves (The White Shadow).

And one other name from the daytime soaps: Does anyone in this thread know the character Victor Newman without looking it up? (Hint) Giant icon in the soaps, but wasn't sure how that would fly here. Still ... Dark Shadows was a daytime soap that got some love, so
My mom was a huge young and the restless fan

I would have ranked Reeves pretty high. Top 5-ish.

I'm willing to do TV Dads. I  think it's the only open category where I've seen at least a few of the shows with the character. Probably can't get to it until next week though.

We need to time our rankings releases better - had like 4 or 5 categories yesterday and now it’s super quiet today so far.

My staff informs me that we once again have four ties, this time in the Leading Woman - Drama '71-'90 category.    Anyone like to step up and break these ties?

That’s why you need an odd number of judges, so you can break the ties by which pick has the most judges ranking it higher.

I’ll do it
Just checked and your pick is in one of the ties.  I'll send you the other three.

drat! missed my chance to opine upon Lindsay Wagner...
She's in one of the ties, too.    Can I send you the one that tuffnutt can't judge?

I could do that here, too; we have wide variations that mean scores in some ties are steady for one woman and go from 13 to 1 pt for another.  I just prefer this method after seeing someone else use it.

1971-1990 Leading Woman Drama Rankings

Combined rankings with @mphtrilogy, @Uruk-Hai, and @Yo Mama.  tuffnutt and wikkid were the tie-breakers.

The Bottom Tier

Somebody had to be at the bottom and it was these two three four.  It was not really even that close either.  (Yes, I'm using exactly the same language as Yo Mama/I did earlier.)

16 - Laura Holt (1 pt)

From one of the judges:  "fun show, but not super memorable character. Pierce was the breakout."  Sounds about right.

(Individual rankings - 2/1/1/1)

15 - Sabrina Duncan (2 pts) - *lost in a tie-breaker

When I was a little girl, my two best friends and I played "Charlie's Angels" and I had to be the Farrah character because I was the blonde.  I was bummed because Sabrina was my favorite.  Still, the fact she shared the spotlight with two others in the show seems to be the reason for her low scores.

(Individual rankings - 3/3/3/2)

14 - Sue Ellen Ewing (3 pts) - *won in a tie-breaker

(Individual rankings - 4/3/2/2)

13 - Ellie Ewing (4 pts)

(Individual rankings - 6/5/4/4)

The ladies of Dallas end up next to each other.  One judge noted that the actress playing Ellie won an Emmy for the role, which moved her up a little.

dang! i escaped from prison thru a Farrah poster in one of my flashbacks....

1971-1990 Leading Woman Drama Rankings (cont.)

The Voluptuous Middle

The difference between coming in 12th here and coming in 8th was 2 points in overall score.

12 - Maddie Hayes (5 pts)

Maddie not getting the love that David Addison did.  That's probably fair.

(Individual rankings - 10/9/6/6)

11 - Alexis Colby (6 pts) - *lost in a tie-breaker

Deliciously evil and definitely the highlight of a fairly bad TV show.  One judge noted she's the best of the nighttime soap characters chosen in both the leading person categories.

(Individual rankings - 9/9/8/6)

10 - Jaime Sommers (7 pts) - *won in a tie-breaker

Apparently I've been spelling her first name wrong my entire life.  This was another one my friends and I pretended to be when we were kids.  Why didn't we pretend to be Wonder Woman?  Might have been that we didn't have boobs yet.

(Individual rankings - 10/10/7/5)

9 - Lydia Grant (8 pts) - *lost in a tie-breaker

(Individual rankings - 14/8/7/4)

From one judge:  "Super-talented in the role and won Emmy for choreography."

8 - Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (9 pts) - *won in a tie-breaker

(Individual rankings - 13/12/7/1)

wikkid broke this tie as follows:  "Wonder Woman by an invisible mile."

Anyone wanna guess the outlier judge on these two?

I wasn't going to out you.  :lmao:

I get the Lydia Grant one, but what do you have against Wonder Woman?

ETA:  Note for the crowd for clarity - he was the high score for Lydia, not the low.

My line of work - 16 year old hetero boy - at the time that show came out had her WAY up on my celeb-crush list. But, even then, I thought the character (had to backspace for the 2nd "a" AGAIN - wtf?) was awful. That's no knock on Carter as an actress; she just didn't have anything to work with. I felt the same about David Banner, without the hotness factor.

1971-1990 Leading Woman Drama Rankings (cont.)

A Cop, a Nurse, and a Pioneer Walk Into a Bar...

7 - Laura Ingalls (10 pts)

(Individual rankings - 13/11/8/5)

Carried this much beloved (not by me) show.  Did the show get taken anywhere?  It was must-see (not by me) with the Waltons (not by me) in the 70s and deserved a spot.

6 - Sgt. Pepper Anderson (11 pts)

(Individual rankings - 14/13/7/5)

I was the high score here due to the ground-breaking nature of this character, the first woman to lead an hour-long drama by herself.  She also caused a huge flood of applications by women to be police officers, the effects of which are still felt today.  You don't necessarily have Sabrina Duncan, Cagney, nor Lacey without her.  Not to mention Angie Dickinson is/was sexy AF.

5 - Captain Colleen McMurphy (12 pts)

(Individual rankings - 15/12/9/8)

I'll be honest that I had no idea who this was.  Once I looked her up, I recalled the existence of the show (though I never saw it) and was suitably impressed with what I read.

Ah, who needs my commentary.  Silver medal went to a tie-breaker!

Interesting (to me) that in this category, we each had a different 16-pointer.  We were unanimous on dramas and split evenly between two picks in the leading men.

I'll have some free time over Christmas and realize that I do have extensive knowledge of the 1991-2020 leading man drama category. I'll take that. Could probably do comedy too if needed.

I can take 91-20 leading woman drama, but I’ll take anyone’s rankings to get more of a consensus. I prefer to do it that way so I can blame the other judges when people get mad.

I put you down for both - I'd be happy to give you a list for either if you want.
