The Great 2020 All Time Television Draft: The Simpsons is judged the greatest show of all time (2 Viewers)

20.15: Joe Friday-male lead, drama, 1950-1970

The template for almost every leader of men to this day.  He was menace before any of us knew what it was or what it looked like, and FWIW, I think it was intentional; It has taken us 50 years to figure out how to telegraph the mannerisms he brought forth effortlessly.  This is why I mentioned when Dragnet was taken that I think there's a great biopic about Jack Webb waiting to be made. Everyone labors under the delusion that Webb was Joe Friday in real life, but even if that were true, we only ever saw the tip of the iceberg, as from what little I've found out about him, he wasn't nearly as square as his TV alter ego, yet was his brainchild and image he maintained with integrity.

As you can see, it's Friday, I'm in love.

@Hov34 up for two.

Pick 20.10 - Jon Stewart - Talk Show Host
the Cronkite of fake news. left-leaning tho he may have been,. he wasn't after the people or policies - just the bull####. that's where the funny lives, where the truth lives

20.13 Margaret Anderson (Father Knows Best), Leading woman in a comedy, 50-70

@timschochet
an important figure to my gen. eager, bright, gracious & sweet, she gave "good girl" a good name

Ok, Peter Gunn Theme... I had this on my radar early and figured I could wait awhile. But I think Wikkid cryptically alluded to it in one of his posts, so I grabbed it now.

For me, it's an iconic piece of music, composed by the great Henry Mancini (who won an Emmy and two Grammys for this). I knew a lot of theme songs (cheers, believe it or not, etc) would get picked, but it's the deepest of categories. Let's face it - almost every popular show has an iconic/recognizable theme song/music - there are probably 50 out there that you would think are worthy of top 10 status. But few stand the true test of time like this one does - even young people today have heard this even if they have no idea who or what Peter Gunn is, where the Friends theme is long forgotten.

Plus, it's cool as heck.
yeah, sry about that. i was a bit of an insomniac as a child and listened to a transistor radio under my pillow every night, so staying up to listen to Jean Shepherd or sneak out to the hallway to overhear a Carson monologue was a thing for me. but all that started from when i was 5 with how hard i'd try to stay up til 10 EVERY Friday night to hear the Peter Gunn theme. made me feel grown up...

20.14 Pee Wee’s Playhouse- Children’s show
great value here. big fan of children's shows for grownups

Cool anecdote. I could see why it would make a kid feel like that.

Pick 21.02 - Hollywood Squares (Category - Game Show)

Back when the celebs could drink and not have to worry about what they said.  Search you tube for Hollywood Squares with Paul Lynde in the center with the banter and innuendo only rivaled on Match Game.  The game was secondary to the interactions and banter.  I mean Paul Lynde received 3 Daytime Emmy nominations for his "role" in Hollywood Squares.   Circle gets the Square.

@timschochet you are up.

The Clapper Caper

21.XX Jerry Seinfeld- Leading man in comedy 1991-2020

"What's the deal with this draft?"

I checked 3 times to make sure he was still available. I don't know if its a smart pick but picking the lead character from the greatest sitcom of the era seems like a safe choice. Even Though Jerry was the straight man he was hilarious. At the time  the highest paid actor on TV.

In 2007, Entertainment Weekly placed the Jerry Seinfeld character eighth on their list of the "50 Greatest TV icons". For his portrayal, Jerry Seinfeld was nominated four times for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, out of which he won one, along with being nominated five times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

I will agree with the bolded

After mulling it over, let me grab my favorite Theme Song, IMHO this one not only sets the tone right at the jump but is used throughout the show to great effect, it always keep me rivited to the edge of my seat.  So integral that the spinoff movies use it as well, although I wish they would use it more sometimes, the Cruise movies have only gotten better with each installment, an amazing feat these days.

Anyway... a great score by Lalo Schifrin as well...

Pick 21 - Mission Impossible - TV Theme Song

You mean this wasn't originally from Revenge of the Nerds?

there's the other one i referred to (obliquely enough, i hope). i signed a band cold in '74 simply from hearing them rock out the MI theme, Allman/Betts style, for one of the best showcase numbers i ever heard

That sounds pretty awesome.
that really does sound awesome.

I love this score and have a couple of copies on vinyl as well and reach for them often.  I am re-watching the MI movie franchise with my daughters and sometimes they nail it and sometimes they need to use it more, it is without a doubt my favorite theme of all time.  But that being said there are 4 others I almost took that are still on the board....

That sounds pretty awesome.
twas - you could tell the two guitarists (a fuzzed SG & Strat w a slide) had watched the show a lot, because they worked caper music elements into their solos. i couldnt offer them enough now to keep them together, as happens more often than not...

21.10 - Major Charles Emerson Winchester III - Supporting Man, 71-90

A favorite. He's also probably the best developed and most interesting character on that series.

@Mrs. Rannous

Since the best themes are now going, I'll take my fave:

Round 21.11  -  Hawaii Five-O

Who among us hasn't hummed this theme when seeing surf or surfers on TV?

@Zow is up.

"Sometimes it seems like we're all living in some kind of prison, and the crime is how much we hate ourselves."

21.14: My So-Called Life, Teen Show

Entertainment Weekly, March 2014:

[My So-Called Life] was the first teen drama that didn't feel like an after-school special. No one ever learned a very important lesson or uttered the phrase 'I love you, Dad.' Angela acted like a real 15-year-old, with all the crying jags and Buffalo Tom concerts that implies. What's even more impressive is that anyone who watched the show back in the '90s, when angst and Manic Panic felt totally of the moment, can now enjoy it on a very different level. Suddenly, Angela's parents are relatable.

Since the seal has been broken on one of my favorite shows, have to make this pick so I don’t miss out entirely.  Yo Mama selects:

21.16 – Larry Sanders – Talk Show Host

Love, love, love this show.  I am feeling weaker in the remaining talk show hosts, so I’m going a bit outside the box with a fictional character but I think he fits well.  Plus, maybe I can get credit for Shandling breaking the fourth wall and hosting the Tonight Show (kidding).  Larry gives me flexibility to move him over to comedy lead if my draft shakes out differently.  Shandling got 5 emmy nominations for this role.

22.01 – Justified – Western

There’s been a ton already drafted in this category, but after the top 2-3 I think the category is wide open and this could score very well depending on the judge.  Love this show too.  Great acting and storylines (trying not to spotlight too much).  It was nominated for 8 emmys.

Interested to see how shows like F&G and My So Called Life are judged due to their limited output.  Had both on my short list.
