The Inauguration (1 Viewer)

Was anyone else surprised to hear that Barron Trump was the first son in the White House since JFK Jr?  I guess I never really thought about it until someone mentioned it this morning on CNN when they showed him at the inauguration.
First non-adult son since JFK Jr. Jack Ford lived in the White House with Gerald and Betty after Nixon resigned and I think he was like 24.

I think that you are overestimating how much effort he's going to put in. He's going to slap his name on the White House in giant gold letters and then hand the keys over to Pence, McConnell, and Ryan while just tweeting made up stuff out about what he's accomplishing.
This is kind of what I'm expecting as well. Trump is the lightening rod while the real work is being done by his administration. To be honest I figure this is closer to how things actually work with any president. They are a figure head more than anything.

:lmao:  I'd call you a broken record but that's unfair to the record because somebody turns it off after a while. How many times are you endlessly going to repeat this?
Actually, a record that keeps repeating itself is scratched, not broken.....

I've see all kinds of wish lists from people but your scenario is probably the reality. He's just gonna tweet all the time about how great we're doing and maybe do some rallies. Meanwhile, a conservative congress will be quietly eliminating every protection for minorities, labor, the poor and the environment they can find. Millions won't even feel the knife sliding in between their ribs.

AAABatteries:

Completely off-topic but why do you quote like this? When you use the quote feature it already puts who the quote is from.
Quote function doesn't work for me. Something to do with my company's firewall. Can't do emoticons either. :kicksrock:

There used to be an HTML hack that allowed me to insert a username into the quote box, but that hack disappeared after the last board upgrade.

George Will's thoughts on the address. Posting this because - with Repubs all in for Trump - I'm generally curious if there are any true conservatives left. Seems like there are at least a couple. Will be interesting to see how this develops going forward.

Twenty minutes into his presidency, Donald Trump, who is always claiming to have made, or to be about to make, astonishing history, had done so. Living down to expectations, he had delivered the most dreadful inaugural address in history.

Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s White House counselor, had promised that the speech would be “elegant.” This is not the adjective that came to mind as he described “American carnage.” That was a phrase the likes of which has never hitherto been spoken at an inauguration.

Oblivious to the moment and the setting, the always remarkable Trump proved that something dystopian can be strangely exhilarating: In what should have been a civic liturgy serving national unity and confidence, he vindicated his severest critics by serving up reheated campaign rhetoric about “rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape” and an education system producing students “deprived of all knowledge.” Yes, all.

But cheer up, because the carnage will vanish if we “follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American.” “Simple” is the right word.

Because in 1981 the inauguration ceremony for a cheerful man from the American West was moved from the Capitol’s East Portico to its West Front, Trump stood facing west, down the Mall with its stately monuments celebrating some of those who made America great — Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln. Looking out toward where the fields of the republic roll on, Trump, a Gatsby-for-our-time, said: “What truly matters is not which party controls our government but whether our government is controlled by the people.” Well.

“A dependence on the people,” James Madison wrote, “is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.” He meant the checks and balances of our constitutional architecture. They are necessary because, as Madison anticipated and as the nation was reminded on Friday, “Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm."

A National Day of Patriotism

According to the (new) White House press secretary, Trump also signed a proclamation calling for a National Day of Patriotism. It was unclear when that day would be or what, exactly, it would entail. The president can declare a one-time federal holiday any time he likes by issuing an executive order to that effect. Congress, however, needs to sign off on the creation of any annual federal holidays.
What?

July 4th.

Memorial Day.

Presidents' Day.

This whole "America First" mentality makes me a bit uneasy.  I understand the concept in a bigger sense, but it comes across as overly obnoxious and likely counter-productive when dealing with an increasingly more connected global economy.

Why does this seem to matter to you guys so much?
It doesn't matter that much, it is just an amusing statistic in light of the fact we were told the overwhelming amount of public support Trump has from most Americans, yet it was not reflected by the numbers at the inauguration, which would indicate a lack of interest or enthusiasm as compared to Obama.

Yeah, right, that was why the crowd count was so low, fear of the protesting lefties.
It's perfect, as much as the left whined about out of control Trump supporters it's the liberals that are the complete embarrassment on Inauguration Day. You are the perfect ring leader too, congrats on your win.

Yeah, Henry, Trump acting like a decent human being was a losing strategy for him. He was supported mostly for his ### holery.
I think there's a severely untapped demographic of Democrats who would have voted for anyone acting like a sane human being not named Hillary Clinton.

Oh because it just seems like the most absurd pissing contest of all time... but whatevs...
