a) Can you give an example of any horror films that has been protested by religious conservatives recently?  Or ever, even?  I don't recall any particular controversy surrounding The Exorcist, for example, but that was eons ago and I would have been too young to remember much about the launch of that film anyway.  Likewise for The Omen.  In the meantime, I've seen lots of horror films that involve bad things happening to kids, people being murdered in gruesome ways, etc. and none of them attracted anybody's ire that I know of.

The Exorcist was  controversial when it was released. Boston for example, at the urging of the Church, attempted to ban the film. A court overturned the decision made in Boston but Boston then put in place a rule that no minors could see The Exorcist, even with a parent. There were mass protests by religious groups in England. It was banned in several counties there. It also led to England passing a Video Recordings Act which banned several horror movies including the Exorcist from being bought or sold on video. You couldn't legally get a copy of The Exorcist in England until 1999. That was a tricky one though because much of the Church did support the film because it was basically supporting Catholic views on demons, priests, power of Satan, etc. 

However, I think you main point is correct. Religious groups haven't been vocal in protesting horror films. If you break it down and look at examples of violence and sex? Yes, I think people who would have 0 issues with their kids reading the Bible would take issue with those types of examples in other mediums.

Recently no. However up until 1968 the motion picture industry followed the "Hays Code" which was a censorship standard mostly inspired by various religious groups, especially the "Legion of Decency". If you're wondering if they were as bad as that names sounds, the answer would be yes. They would declare boycotts of theatres that showed films that didn't meet their severely "tight-assed" standards. From around 1930 until the mid 50's just about all the American studios followed the code but some directors and then studios started to push the lines until it collapsed and was replaced by the rating system that is used (with minor modifications) now.
