Edit...2 yard loss....yes, should have been called.

That means that hits with the crown of the helmet are illegal when they are beyond three yards from the line of scrimmage even when they are between the tackels. It defines the area where it is allowed as a box with two sides being the tackles and the two other sides being 3 yards from the LOS.

1. I'll never let my boys play football

2. I think the NFL has peaked in popularity

Agree with both. I think the NFL peaked last year. Would be curious to see the ratings.

It's hard to know exactly when something peaks until years after the fact. I think the peak was in 2010, and coincides with the rules changes on helmet-to-helmet hits. Penalties on these hits bother me, and I don't like it compared to before 2010, but I understand it, and feel less guilty about enjoying the on field action while hoping today's players won't have as high a rate of dementia and CTE as the players of the past generation.

I agree with this and that is why I hated when Tomlin went for the fumble call. He just got away with killing one of their players and no flag on the crown of the helmet. 1st half they crucified the Cinci DB for just making a tackle at a guy running right at him full speed and leading with his helmet into the defender. Glad the media saw it that way.

It's very real. I have never been a Tomlin fan, felt he won with Cowher's team and the talent eroded on defense slowly over the years but I know some folks love the guy. They don't. All it does is create a very small place on the field where it's legal to lead with the crown. It's a box about 8 yards wide and 3 yards beyond the LOS of scrimmage, and it exists because runnings backs would get their heads torn off if they couldn't lower they heads running through there.

Guys are going super fast and Brown came down at last second. I'm sure Burflict had no idea he hadn't caught the ball.

I think if you watch the replays, Burfict's head was up when the ball went off Brown's hands. We can debate about whether he had time to slow down or pull up, but I'm certain he saw the ball go by.

Burfict is taking a lot of heat and should be, but...

He's the reason the Bengals were in that position. He made so many HUGE plays at crucial moments, including a game changing sack and what should have been a game ending interception. They didn't show it on TV, but apparently he went nutso after the Bernard hit, but got it back together and I though played under control that next series that ended with the sack. Doesn't excuse the final play, but up until that point he had done a decent job of walking the razor's edge between that 1-man wrecking crew and out-of-control.

Still not sure what the crown of the helmet on a nondefenseless runner rule is.

IMO, it's just one of these catch-all penalties that a ref can call if they thing it is egregious enough. By the book, that's one that could be called 10 times every game.
