The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (1 Viewer)

In the late '80s I had a book called "The Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time." Like many music writers of the time, the authors could be pedantic d***heads, but they were often funny.

That Charlene thing was #4 on the worst singles list.

I searched for "The Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time" and the suggested result on Google had Dylan's Self Portrait at #3.  It's not a great album by Dylan standards but it's certainly listenable and fascinating in its own weird way.

"Artists that you think are one hit wonders but are actually two hit wonders" would be a great theme.
The more I look into it - there are a number of bands that are on a fairly wide number of industry one-hit wonder lists that have another charted song or two.  Mostly of them don't break the top 20 with their other couple of songs that look to have mostly ridden on the coattails of their much more known hit.

Perfect example - Of the two songs I have narrowed down to my next pick, one is from the typical generic white guy crooner from the early-mid 60s.  No way did I know he had much of anything else ...and he is almost universally listed on one-hit wonder lists.  Well, he had one song chart at 26 the next year that sounds an awful lot like the big hit ...the other one charted at 27 and is a cover from "West Side Story."

Extra points if you know who I'm talking about.

That's the one. They did an albums list and a singles list.

IIRC, they only included stuff by artists that they actually expected something from, because "any schlub can make a wretched record." Charlene qualified because she was mentored by Stevie Wonder (!)

But you know what truth is?

it's that little baby that you're holding

and it's that man you fought with this morning

the same one you're going to make love with tonight

that's truth, that's love

huh, ok

ETA; I don't think I've ever heard this banger before.

I really need to sit down and write ideas down, as I feel like I am going to be missing songs/years or skipping over something that might be obvious.   That said, there were 4-5 songs that instantly popped into my head when I was thinking about changing to this jukebox and I think I am going to have more trouble with 00s+ movie songs as well, so ...

The author of the book Jimmy Guterman went on to write a book about Springsteen called Runaway American Dream in 2008:

I was going with US hits - and the Wiki does clarify that groups that have hits in other countries but only limited success elsewhere may qualify.

Not married to it - anyone else weigh in??

ETA:  thanks @simey

I really would feel more comfortable getting some more input on this if you guys would - I'm going to hold off for now.
I'm not counting hits in other country for mine. If an artist only had 1 album but multiple hits from it I may count it as a 1 hit wonders anyway, especially if I hate the other hits.

White Rabbit

Jefferson Airplane

i feel like jA has a somewhat negative perception, but maybe that’s not true.  Either way, I always dug a lot of their stuff, though I do believe that this is a cover.

Yeah, I wasn't disparaging the song or the artists, just found it amusing that there is 2 versions of 1 song before there is 1 version of any Beatles song.

I WAS disparaging Tim's pick, of course.
Would be funny if no Beatles were taken the whole draft.

I sent like ten people on this board a copy of this movie when it came out.

Not to take the attention from Charlene, but now seems like the appropriate time to say I'm drafting covers. I intended to wait one more pick before saying anything as it is an absolute must have with no plan b, but guess I want to play with some fire tonight. And that is probably Tim's fault.

That part is spoken. With feeling.

What the #### do those guys know? I read that book. I love a LOT of those songs. And Metal Machine Music is listenable.

The Temptations did a cover of “I’ve Never Been to Me”:

Not as good as the original, but they’re not Charlene.

5.08 - Say Goodbye to Hollywood - Ronnie Spector & The E Street Band - (1977)

A Billy Joel cover is given an appropriately huge Wall of Sound production.  The E Street Band is behind the wall somewhere but you can really only pick out Clarence Clemons.

The B-side Baby Please Don't Go is a ballad by Miami Steve Van Zandt that's pretty good as well.
