The Rise and Fall of ESPN (1 Viewer)

A lot of buzz about the Mannings on MNF** among New Orleans locals on Saintsreport, FWIW. Not sure if people in Miami, NYC, Seattle, etc. would be as excited about it.

** I know it's an alternate feed.
I'm looking forward to the Manning Feed. Should be WAY more interesting than the regular broadcast in my opinion.

Just combating the same idiotic woke/broke narrative from the Q crowd with facts. Every single network/cable service is down from where they were 7 years ago. NBC is going to be down millions on the Olympics. Food Network’s corporate owners felt the same hit and started up a steaming service to make it up. It’s across the board.
I get that, but it’s like you like in wake for anyone to say anything the least bit wrong about ESPN that is negative so you can immediately correct them.  You come off like an apologist for them. Just my two cents.

it's a joke ... anyone who calls them garbage is "ZOMG!!!1!11!1!!! Q!!1!11!" ... yet the defenders are in tune and enlightened to the industry goings on  :lmao:

"Did you hear? The network of GUY FIERI had to supplement with a streaming platform - THIS IS AN ACROSS THE BOARD HAPPENING"

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

hfs, you can't make this kinda #### up.

btw, the Olympics have never exactly been a consistent cash cow for the networks, though they fund roughly 50% of the paid revenue to the IOC.

It’s not that big of a deal, I’m just a guy sitting here posting on a dying off message board. But why networks are losing viewers is an interesting topic to me. The false narrative of go woke/broke is just total ignorance.

yeah, the debate is rendered moot at this point ... i mean, if the GUY FIERI network can't survive in it's organic state, well ... then the entire industry is doomed - DOOMED, i tell ya!

- we're talking the multimedia behemoth that was The Food Network, here -

:lmao:

are you stuck in 2009? This is bizarre.
you're shilling up there like a feckless sycophant, babbling about how the Food Network had to adopt a streaming service - as if THAT example is indicative of a cataclysmic industry wide trend, ergo why the Espys lost 80% of it's viewers from the baseline # provided   :lmao:

aysfkm?

you're juxtaposing the Food Network to the "Worldwide Leader In Sports"?

and we're supposed to buy this #### you're shoveling?

:lmao: :lmao:

Between the constant laughing smilies and the reading comprehension of a child I really don’t know what else to say here. It’s like I’m having a less intelligent conversation with one of the hyenas from the lion king.

hey, man ... you can sleep at night knowing even Guy Fieri's network took a hit - it'll be alright, Comrade ... breathe deep.

your lil' friends at ESPN will still be there for you - have fun paying their salaries, sucker - typical goon #### from you in this thread.

*INSERT SMILIE*

:lmao:

Remember when NIKE got all woke and backed Kapernick among other woke moves and the same people said that would be the end of them and then everyone stopped buying their shoes and started rocking New Balances instead and now NIKE is barely surviving and definitely not drowning in money? This is gonna be just like that.
Folks are lining up to cop the latest New Balances

well at least no one is talking about espn anymore thats for sure take that to the bank brohans

Man the basic point was viewership is down the last 7-8 years across the board, even at seemingly politically benign places like the food network. So they are all heading to streaming services to make up that gap. I’m sorry this seemingly very complicated point eluded your big brain. Next time I’ll post it in smilies.

You do seem a bit emotionally invested when it comes to ESPN.

I keep waiting for the broadcast rights bubble to burst but contracts keep going up.  The value of NHL rights doubled over the previous contract. ESPN's share is $2.8B over seven years.

Those kinds of expenditures have to be approved at the C-level of Disney, who generally have a solid grasp on the current media landscape. Hockey doesn't seem to be the hot sport of the 2020s to me but Disney corporate is smarter than I am.

My wife, who is a Disney fanatic and spends as much time on Disney forums as I spend here, has zero faith in current Disney leadership. This has to do with how they are managing the parks and other entertainment assets, but I doubt she'd have any faith in the ESPN side if she cared about it.

I'm guessing for every person who swears off Espys and Sportscenter because Bruce Jenner was given the humanitarian (or whatever) award for becoming a female named Caitlynn, there is a person who will watch more for the same reason.

The world is becoming more partisan, unfortunately.  This thread, for instance.

The one thing we can ALL agree on is that Skip Bayless should shut up, forever, please God.

I swore off Sportscenter because the Internet and never really swore on the Espys

From what I read the nhl will be espn+ content. Like their version of extra innings will be on there for those who subscribe.

ESPN+ is getting one exclusive NFL game per season (excluding the two local home markets) starting in 2023.  NBCUniversal is going to use sports to grow Peacock. Get used to nickel and diming.

meathead drivel ^

look, i'll dumb this waaay the #### down for you ...

nobody is saying "get woke, go broke" is the only reason those Espy numbers fell off a friggin' cliff ... but it is, without question, the biggest reason they did.

can you wrap the gray matter around that, Chappy?

further ... the fact that you continue to expose yourself as too thick to grasp this, by refusing to even acknowledge that this is the most dominant force in those numbers tanking, shows just how ignorant and tone deaf you are - simply handwaving it as folderol, without even considering there may be even a modicum of merit to it, is pure clown show content.

like a petulant 3 year old who puts fingers in their ears and goes "LALALALALA!" - it's circus sideshow level ####, pal - your citing of the Food Network's troubles is the stupidest point in this entire thread ... comparing grapes to kumquats - yeah, that works.

here you are

btw, i'm not the only one noticing what a bootlicker you are looking like here - ya might wanna take that under consideration.

:bye:

This is not correct.  I don't care either way about the back and forth in this thread, but to claim the single biggest reason ratings are down for a specific channel is due to "politics" is incorrect.  The entire model has changed and all of the players in that field have been effected.  That basic paradigm shift is the single biggest reason for all of these channels having significant number drops in eyeballs on tvs watching them.

Also, please be cooler.  Joe B's Golden Rule and all that.

Agreed, really seems like a strange take.  It would seem that only those on the extreme ends of the political spectrum would even care about stuff like that.  I would think for 80%-90% of the people in the middle of the spectrum, most aren't even noticing whether ESPN is too woke or not woke enough.  I sure don't care.

Ok man you nailed it. We can drop it now, all you RW warriors are taking Espn down.

Also, I truly don’t care what you or anybody think about me at all. It’s super weird you would even think I would, this isn’t that serious.

As a stockholder, I'd be interested in her negative takes.  I bought on the basis of Dis + and a return to parks, but always love to hear the bear case.

Outside of their 30 for 30s (which are usually really good) I can't think of an instance I've watched ESPN for any other reason than live sports.  Sports Center was sooooooooooooooooooooo 1990s.  Who the hell wants to watch Skip and Shannon scream at each other?  Who has time for that?

I still watch College GameDay most Saturdays in the Fall, mostly just because it's just sort of always been a part of getting fired up for a day of college football for me.  And I like when Rinaldi makes me  , although he's gone now, too.  I do like SVP and will tune into his SC every once in a great while.  But that's about it.

Skip and Shannon are on Fox, no?

It's mainly that she thinks they are bean counters and tone-deaf to what customers/viewers really want.

Anyone who uses the word cuck unironically is really hard to take seriously, just an FYI. Is it really hard to believe that some people don’t care about the politics aspect either way and just want to watch live sports wherever they may happen to live? I don’t care what they do with the rest of their programming as I haven’t watched a highlight or talking head show since I got high speed internet for the first time in 2002.

I watch live sports on ESPN.  I'll watch Sportscenter or pre-game shows during the NFL and CFB seasons.  I'll turn on one of the ESPN channels when I'm staying in a hotel and getting ready in the morning.  Instant channel change if Stephen A comes on.

I hear more about the politics than see it.  I just don't watch that often other than live sports.  Doubt I'm part of their priority audience.  I cut the cord 10+ years ago.

Nah man it’s because of MSNBC. If Fox had the Olympics ratings would be through the roof!
Lol

it’s almost like viewing habits have changed dramatically due to numerous other options that have come available the last 5-6 years I wonder what they could be, well I guess we’ll just never know

Yep. The more I think about it, the more I think it is obvious that Taylor or people close to her were behind this leak.  With her contract renewal weeks away, this will put pressure on ESPN to pay her big bucks to do a little damage control.  She had that ace in her hand and I am guessing she will have played it perfectly once the smoke clears.
ESPN declines to renew Maria Taylor's contract

So much for that.

NBC seems to think that she's a hot commodity, though.

Right, my guess would be that NBC ended up paying more than they would have had to if that story hadn't broke, but we will obviously never know for sure.  In retrospect, it would appears as if Taylor never had any intention of returning to ESPN, so the leaked story was likely done so to get her name out there and drive up interest, and a network like NBC probably salivated at the idea of signing a talent who was done wrong by ESPN due to race.

It's still crazy how badly ESPN played this.  I would imagine that more than a few black employees are now counting the days until their contact is up so they can bail as well.

Okay, it is FS1 and not ESPN, but I saw on Twitter last night the thing about Jenny Taft putting that sexist troll Bayless in his place yesterday,  I guess now Bayless will get Taft fired or replaced, and that will be a great look for FSI, punishing a woman who pushed back at a man fat shaming an NFL head coach.  Although technically not getting fired and get reassigned could be considered a reward since she wouldn't have to work with that sociopath anymore.

ESPN botches the Taylor/Nichols feud badly, Taylor leaves anyway, and now they have taken Nichols off the air, from the way it sounds, permanently until her contracts runs out. Brilliant.
