The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (4 Viewers)

Arguably the greatest scene in sitcom history:

Never could get into it...that clip doesn't even move the funny needle for me.

ETA - Not a knock at anyone in particular for their personal taste, just a possible reason why this wasnt a top 20 show.
I was too young when this aired. Recall some reruns being on growing up, but If that's the funniest scene in the show, I won't go any further.
It’s very likely that 40+ years from now that someone who watches one scene from a current popular comedy might not find it that funny. That’s assuming we’re not all underwater or roaming a nuclear wasteland scrounging for provisions.
I understand this. It makes sense. Tastes/styles/humor change over time. Everyone has a different style of humor. There is an age factor as well: We sometimes hold a certain show in almost reverence or have an emotional attachment due to viewing early in life. I get all this.

Still having a hard time dealing with people feeling 'meh' about one of my favorite sitcoms though. It is completely illogical and it is something I'm going to have to come to grips with lol

I'm not sure I'm going to handle it well when my #1 show comes and people are apathetic about it.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see this show so high.

It featured two of the best characters of all time (Reverend Jim and Louis De Palma), with great supporting actors and is one of the funniest shows ever made.
This is basically why I ranked it where I did.
I had it at #35, but I still feel it is too low. It is amazing how many of the cast went on to great things.

Danny DeVito - Louie DePalma - I think it is safe to put him in the "Hollywood legend" category.
Judd Hirsch - Alex Reager - Has a good career. Everything from Ordinary People to Independence Day.
Christopher Loyd - Reverend Jim - Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Star Trek Klingons. Need I say more?
Tony Stanza - Tony Banta - Who's the Boss was a staple thru the 80's. He also did a movie about a donkey that kicks field goals?
Andy Kaufman - Ladka - Legendary stand up comedian. Infamous "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World". Tony Clifton. Letterman appearance with Jerry Lawler. Mighty Mouse. Too many to list
Marilou Henner - Elaine Nardo - Would go on to sell a mountain of diet/alt health books for the next 20 years.
Jeff Conway - Bobby Wheeler - Always found it funny in an ironic way the guy who played a struggling actor in the show would go on to be the 'least famous' of the bunch. He did the movie Grease, and then did well in the show Babylon 5.
Lol @ listing Tony Clifton separately.

Also don't forget Carol Kane!

I didn't find it funny at the time. Most everyone in it is annoying. (Not you, Ms Henner.)

It’s very likely that 40+ years from now that someone who watches one scene from a current popular comedy might not find it that funny

That's because the current comedies aren't funny.

Zing!
Don't you mean Bazinga!?

Oh yes! Speaking of sitcoms that were never funny . . .

Pardon me. Speaking of sitcoms that I could never quite get . . . Young Sheldon is darn near unwatchable and I like it more than Big Bang.

🎼Everything is brighter cause everything is relative in relative world/Jokes aren't funny but damn it's still sunny in relative world/If you're not laughing you might see/a different couple laughing merrily/so smile and bear it/while the others play and wear it in relative world . . .

Most people rave about Ted Lasso, though I haven't seen it. I thought the first 2 seasons of Only Murders in the Building were pretty solid. I started season 3 and I wasn't into it for some reason and haven't seen season 4 yet. It says online that they casted Christoph Waltz for season 5 so I'm going to catch up before then.

I have. If you need to be reminded about the Golden Rule with heavy doses of therapy and chicken soup for your soul, that's the show!
Part of what makes Ted Lasso interesting is that Ted is the show's MacGuffin. Sure, there's fun to be had with the "fish out of water" trope, but there's just as much (if not more) reaction to him as there is Ted's reactions.

It's funny without being droll or cynical- two things there's too much of in today's comedy. I'll take my comedy earnest and heartfelt, thank you very much.

Or maybe I just agree 100% with his opinions on tea.

This feels so much like the "disagreements" I have with people about 70s/early 80s comedy movies. I am getting same vibe here with these type of posts.

I am more in agreement with you here (no surprise), I chuckled but that clip felt more like an SNL skit that went on a bit too long. To be fair, I've never seen an episode of Taxi, just bits and scenes. Things become funnier with repetition and familiarity with characters as well. I also find people like Kaufman more interesting than I do funny.

It's also about context. Reverend Jim trying to get a drivers license? You knew that idea was preposterous from the moment it was uttered. It was set up from Louie having fun with it to the actual test part.

Imagine if I had only seen bits and pieces of Six Feet Under, then watched the series finale. I would probably think it wasn't that special. It's all about context.

The Taxi scene was tough to watch because of Jim's past and subsequent inadequacies at just about everything.

But if people thought it seemed stale (it did a little) that might be because the jokes like "slow down" are now so ingrained in the culture that they don't seem groundbreaking. Plus, I watched an episode last night and part of Ignatowski's brilliance was Christopher Lloyd's physical mannerisms and comedy. Everything is over Jim's head and he's constantly in a state of revelation.

In the episode I watched, they had a Pac-Man scene. Louie is introducing a new Pac-Man machine to Jim and the employees, and Lloyd's Jim is so enthralled with the flashing lights and sounds that he's nearly pressing Danny DeVito up against the machine, looking agape at the wonders that lay before him. It's quite the scene.

Here it is. Not necessarily uproarious, but funny in a very poignant and exaggerated sort of way. Jim and his addictive personality is going to be a sucker for this machine, and they all know it.

Yeah. Like I personally have seen a few episodes of most of these pre-2000 sitcoms and generally think theyre not that funny and the production quality is low.

But I wasn't around when they were culturally relevant. It's hard to unentangle that element. We have a list of people's favorites, which is cool. Don't confuse it with the best ever or most impactful ever and it's a more fun exercise to enjoy the reveals.

We all inherently understand that artistic things like music, movies, television shows are highly subjective and personal. Still, when you gush over a show that you love, and someone else doesn’t agree, we sometimes take that personally because it feels like a personal rejection, even while knowing that’s not the case at all. It helps that most here have the courtesy to frame it as “that didn’t appeal to me “ rather than, “that show sucks and is written for idiots.” There are threads here created to celebrate one specific movie, show, or band, and it’s hard to participate if your opinion is negative, but what’s the point of a message board discussion if you can’t voice disagreement with the crowd? There are a few sacred cows here that I don’t appreciate at all, but find it’s usually best just to avoid because very few fans are going to be interested in having a meaningful discussion of their favorite art.

One thing I really like about this thread is it brings up a show i havent thought of in decades in some cases. I'll usually do a quick google search to reboot my brain. The Muppets one was crazy to me. They began in 1955? Damn. When you read the journey of the idea and the show my goodness has it adapted itself well over time. Well done Mr Jim Henson.

This was our family show when I was growing up. So many great characters, bits, and memories that I still reference to this day.

When my kids were younger, we saw a Muppets themed show at Disneyland (or maybe California Adventure). It was about a year after my dad had passed. When we were leaving the show my kids asked me why I was crying. It was that darned Swedish Chef. That stupid chef was my dad’s favorite and he would always do impressions of him. It’s crazy the things that impact us and that we carry with us.

Loved.

I toyed with adding Wonder Years, but I probably haven’t seen it since it aired and was worried nostalgia was clouding my judgement

Also couldn’t really think of any memorable scenes, just the characters

I watched a few now that it is on Prime. I think the humor and heart still hold up, but the voiceover started to irritate me on consecutive episodes.

To give a sense of how attached I was to this show as a kid, my sister and I cried hysterically when my mom told us it was being pre-empted for a speech by President Carter.

The humor still holds up for the most part. We've watched some episodes with our son on Disney+.

When we were leaving the show my kids asked me why I was crying. It was that darned Swedish Chef. That stupid chef was my dad’s favorite and he would always do impressions of him. It’s crazy the things that impact us and that we carry with us.
My dad could take or leave most of the show but he LOVED the Swedish Chef.
Animal, Beeker, Gonzo and Fozzy Bear always had me in stiches.
