The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (5 Viewers)

SNL has had 939 episodes at about 70 minutes which gives us 65,700 minutes
But it should have been half that many episodes. I mean there is a whole thread here about how bad it got. That has to matter when it comes to a final ranking. At least it does for me. I probably haven't seen an episode in 25-30 years and really don't have a desire to.
Some of the funniest stuff the show has ever had was in the last 25-30 years.
Sure. And I can watch the clip when it comes out of actually being worth watching. No reason to watch the whole episode

SNL was tough to rank. So hit or miss over 50 years. There’s a lot of nostalgia from decades ago but man some of the skits from the 70s both really sucked and some were gold. I think the issue they’ve had over the last decade is the talent and writing isn’t quite as good. There’s still some really funny stuff they hit on so it’s perfect to catch clips of. I hope it stays on the air for a while still.
I think ilov80s nailed it. Judge the top 10% and toss the rest. The 10% is epic.
I think this is a weird take, but that is what makes these threads fun.
It’s just a different type of show than say Ozark or Friends. Friends had 236 episodes at about 22 minutes long. Thats roughly 5200 minutes. SNL has had 939 episodes at about 70 minutes which gives us 65,700 minutes. So if we say every minute of Friends was great and it didn’t have a single wasted minute. It’s still about 1300 minutes less than the best 10% of SNL.

If you sat down and watched every episode of Friends and then watched only the top 10% of SNL, you would spend 22 more hours watching Samburg, Radner, Carvey and company.

Don’t even get me started on Ozarks. It would need another 1000+ episodes to fill the same time as SNL has aired for. They struggled to fill 44 episodes.
I would probably laugh about the same amount though. ;)

I get it, and it's not even criticism of it being in the top 10. That is where I expected it based on talent that went through there, and it's impact on culture. I think what this brings to light is just the different nature of this countdown vs. others and what TV brings to the table vs movies or music. It could also be how I overthink things, especially ratings and rankings. I just found the comment and idea of just looking at the 10% of a show as the grade to be an odd concept. As somebody who is not a fan, I read your math as saying there is a lot of dead space to weed through to get to the really funny bits. That is a weird thing to say about a top 10 show, IMO. It's odd to me it lasted 50 years if that is a general sentiment of the show, or that it was pretty bad for long stretches of time as casts change. I also think it's weird that we will also have a show in the top 10 that most of us also agree turned quite bad for the last few seasons of it's run. I wouldn't put a movie in my top 10 that I can't watch the last 45 mins of, and I wouldn't put an album in a top 10 if 1/2 the songs were skippable.

SNL is an American Institution. Definitely deserves top 10 ranking.

I got to grow up into the 80's, and 90's staying up late with my buddies watching the Church Lady, Matt Foley motivational speaker, Bill Swerski"s superfans (daaaaa Bearsss!), Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy, weekend update with Dennis Miller, Wayne's World.....the list goes on and on...
I'm not sure I've ever laughed as hard as I did when I saw the first Matt Foley sketch. David Spade and Christina Applegate, playing the kids Foley was trying to motivate, couldn't contain themselves either.

Years later I realized another layer of what made it funny -- pretty much every motivational speaker I've ever seen or heard of is doing that gig AFTER they overcame whatever challenges they had. But Foley had overcome nothing, he was still living in a van down by the river.
Chris Farley could kill you with a facial expression. Or hiking up his pants.....best physical comedian of all time. Still miss that guy a lot......I spose his inner demons were part of what made him who he was
I don't know about all that...
Name one better......and Belushi was not better
For physical comedy I would go with either Peter Seller's or John Ritter
no Carey?
Or Steve Martin, or Chevy Chase, or Rowan Atkinson, or JOHN BELUSHI. I said it. Fight me.

The list is long and debatable, no bout adout it. Just because Farley is dead doesn't mean we have to crown his ***. (too soon?)

There was no reason to watch those earlier seasons either then - it’s always been hit or miss. I watched a random 70’s episode a while back and some of the skits were painfully unfunny.

Chippendales made people vomit from laughing so hard (I assume).

I think being late night plays into its success as well. You don’t need to lock in and pay close attention. There’s not much else on. Maybe you have a little buzz going. It’s live so you’re seeing a performance, like the best music-comedy club in your home every Saturday night. There’s something I always liked about it and I don’t think 90% of the skits are bad. There just not memorable.

Well then no reason to watch a football game either. You can just catch the 10 interesting minutes of the game highlights on YouTube right after. Most of a football game is boring.

Now we agree on something! ;)

With the top 8 fairly obvious, outside the order, her are my shows that i had ranked top 25 that didnt even crack the top 300

2- Big Train UK 1998-2002
Already discussed

6- Impractical Jokers US 2011-
That it wasnt ranked surprises me. A lot.
The guys are just masters at this format and make themselves, rather than the general public, the butt of all the jokes

12- Louie US 2010-2015
This was off the wall, funny and super interesting.
Guess lots of people abandoned him after his personal stuff, but he still sells out arenas now.

17 - 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown UK 2012-
Mixing two TV shows, the serious game show Countdown with the irreverent 8 out of 10 Cats is genius.
Jimmy Carr hosts, but the comedic talent makes this show a riot.

21 - Broen/The Bridge Sweden/Denmark 2011-2018
The Scandinavian crime thriller has never been done better than this.
Sofia Helin is simply outstanding as Saga Norén. The character is obviously autistic, but its never spoken about and everyone dances around it.

24 - The Black Adder/Blackadder II/Blackadder The Third/Blackadder Goes Forth UK 1982-1989
Because each series is a different time period its hard to rank appropriately. Season one set in the middle ages terrible, but the second and third seasons, set in Elizabeth I and George III’s reign respectively are magnificent as Rowan Atkinson figures out how to play Blackadder.
Watch Hugh Laurie as the Prince Regent and then watch House.

25- The Paul Hogan Show Australia 1973-1984
Hogan obviously broke out as Crocodile Dundee internationally, But his sketch shows in Australia were must see television.
He literally came from working construction on the Sydney Harbour Bridge to having his own show.

Next ones that didnt make the list were F is For Family at #33 and Murder One at #34

Totally different situations. Watching game flow, certain players (away from the ball) and overall build up for the game is a big part of live sports. A skit show has none of that.

Earlier seasons were before you tube. There weren't clips to watch. You had to watch live. Much different.

Greatest of all time seems like a stretch and I love Farley. Top 5? I think people's definition of physical comedy is gonna vary. Personally, from a sheer physical comedy standpoint, Jim carey might be my #1 of all time. Imo. I could also change my opinion at any given moment through debate though.

Maybe but a live show has energy and does have a flow. It’s all meant as one show/performance. Maybe you don't see the flow connection to it or find value from seeing it all. Most of the kids I teach don’t see that flow and value in watching a sporting event. Many of the kids who I teach who really like sports don’t watch the games very often. They just check out the highlights. It is interesting to see how that YouTube/clip mentality has spreed from SNL to SNF.

Tommy Boy was a good movie said no one ever except BP.

3 amigos was ok. Only Murders is pretty good. He gets negative points for Bowfinger

Community is solid but Chase doesn't stand out for me. The Vacation series is pretty good. I liked Spies Like us.

Not really seen any Rowan Atkinson stuff but Blackadder is considered a classic I guess. Rat Race is ok. It was a fun movie.

I liked 8 simple rules. 3's Company was on my list.

Both Blues Brothers and Animal House are solid.

I know I've seen Dr. Strangelove but its been 20ish years and I can't remember it that well but I generally remember liking it.

So I might go

Belushu
Ritter
Farley
Chase
Martin
Atkinson
Sellers

I liked Rules of Engagement but I had some other bad comedy shows that no one else likes. The Goldbergs and Raising Hope
Oh man I forgot the Goldbergs. Would have had that probably around top 30 or so. I thought it was hilarious and touching like The Wonder Years, hit on a lot of nostalgia due to the time period setting, and it was the frst live action show me, wife, and kids would actually sit and all watch together.

Sorry Goldfarb!

Can I write in Curly Howard?
Soitently.
I had The Three Stooges listed as #24 on my list. Yes, I know they started out as shorts between movies in the 39's and 40's. 99% of people know them from television though. Same for Bugs Bunny.

Everyone in this thread needs to step back and reevaluate their lives for not putting these geniuses on their list. They are the bridge between vaudville and television. In terms of iconic television milestones, it goes

1. The Three Stooges
2. I Love Lucy
3. The Sopranos

Anyone who wants to argue this point, just know ahead of time you are wrong.

Pretty confident these aren't showing up. My unranked shows. I’m definitely a sucker for one or two-season dramatic stuff (6-10 episodes per season) with really good writing/cast/acting. Lot of post-apocalyptic stuff. No game shows, reality, skit, talk shows considered

#9 Catastrophe – Underrated comedy. Great writing. Great acting. Really funny. A lot of awards. It’s an easy binge and I can’t recommend it enough.

#29 Fauda – Israeli special forces track Islamic terrorists. Think Israeli version of The Unit but better. Can be tough at times, but the lead is amazing and it’s a fun ride.

#30 The Night Manager – My #1 recommendation when someone asks me for something they might not have heard of. I love love love this show.

#32 Zerozerozero - #2 recommendation. See above. Great take on the global drug trade.

#34 Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – What can I say, I love Sorkin

#35 Godless – Incredible cast and acting. If you liked Deadwood, I’d try this.

#38 Into the Night – A little cheesy, but again post-apocalyptic. Guilty pleasure.

#42 MacGyver – Weekly advertisement for duct tape. I’m a bit of a engineering/physics nerd so this hit a sweet spot as a teenager. We used to talk about it in AP Physics.

#44 Manhunt: Unabomber – Really interesting take on how they caught him (forensic linguistics)

#55 The A-Team – yeah I know. I never missed it as a kid. Maximum number of rounds fires with zero casualties. I can’t remember anyone ever getting shot.

#59 The Heavy Water War – Obscure war-drama miniseries about how Norway tried to sabotage the Nazi’s nuclear weapon program. Check it out.

#61 The Silo – Recency bias at work but I just love post-apocalyptic stuff. In that genre this show is original. Well written and acted.

#65 Brockmire – 1st season was hysterically funny. Hank Azaria and Amanda Peet). Tailed off later but I loved it.

#66 Quincy, M.E. – I think I’ve made my feelings on this clear. This show made me want to be a pathologist for a while. Early CSI.

6- Impractical Jokers US 2011-
That it wasnt ranked surprises me. A lot.
The guys are just masters at this format and make themselves, rather than the general public, the butt of all the jokes
I've watched an episode here or there and I liked it but I never even considered it for top 70.
I thought it was ranked because I remember discussion. Or maybe it was JML’s highest ranked that didn’t qualify?

I've seen a lot of episodes and I always like it. It's dumb but once I start watching. I can't stop.

Michael Landon has a pretty damn good resume
Epic head of hair.
Danson or Landon for hair, pick one
Stop it. When the sun glistens off Michael Landon's hair it's like an angel is standing before you. It's the primary reason he was cast in Highway to Heaven. RIP Mr Landon
Yep plus isn't Danson wearing a rug or was that always an urban legend?

That and the AK-47 everyone had never ran out of bullets. They had those old school 750 round clips. Loved that show. Ha ha

I ranked it 45th.

Had I remembered it the morning I made my list in haste and just before the deadline, I would have definitely ranked.

Two good recommendations.

#59 The Heavy Water War – Obscure war-drama miniseries about how Norway tried to sabotage the Nazi’s nuclear weapon program. Check it out.

#65 Brockmire – 1st season was hysterically funny. Tailed off later but I loved it.
I had Brockmire in my 30's I think.

I feel like I watched something about the Heavy Water in Norway. I wonder if I watched that. IF not I plan on checking it out.

On my first revision I had Kfulim so if you like Israelite dramas. Apparently there was a UK or US version that didn't do as good but I've never seen it.

And for you ww2 nuts, I had X Company early on in the process.

He wore a small hairpiece while on Cheers (he stopped after that) - they actually incorporated into the show on one of the last episodes. He tells Carla his secret and takes it off.

68 Johnny Quest - Quite possibly the most violent children's show ever. Shots fired made the A Team look like wusses. Also, the episode with the invisible monster gave me nightmares for days.
Way back in the day, TNT or someone had a Johnny Quest marathon so my parents taped it for us so we have 2 vcr tapes of Johnny Quest. I liked it as a kid.

Note that today, many of the episodes have been edited to reduce the violence and remove modernly unacceptable racism. I think YouTube may be the only source for the unedited episodes.

Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals

That is my all time favorite SNL sketch. Just the randomness and absurdity gets me every time.

"Say hi to your mother for me"
Love that one.

The two sketches that made me laugh the hardest in the past 10 years or so are the one with Bill Hader as the Vietnam vet with the puppet, and the Chapelle sketch where he plays the All-State guy along side Aunt Jemimah and Uncle Ben and they're all getting fired.

Cheers is nowhere near the greatest theme song. Off the top of my head, The Rockford Files, Taxi, The Odd Couple, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, all better. And there’s probably a lot I’m not thinking of at the moment.
