Tiger Woods (6 Viewers)

And yet, if winning the "little ones" is so easily diminished, why doesn't everyone win them with such frequency? And why is it suddenly so popular to cheapen these victories?
Because the media hype brings a lot of casual observers into the tent to watch, some of who don't know what they're looking at. And the internet gives them a venue to voice their opinion, no matter how stupid.
So your contention is, that back in the days of Nicklaus, a big to-do was made about the Arnold Palmer, John Deere Classic, Bridgestone-type tournaments and it wasn't mainly about the majors?

Actually, I think the exact OPPOSITE is true. You Tiger-lovers have suddenly tried to make every tournament (that Tiger wins) become almost major-worthy. This trend was started by guys like you. Not coincidentally, about five years ago. I bet when Tiger was actually able to keep it together and win majors, THEN it was all about the four big ones.

i hope vonn brings some spinner from the ski world over for this week. :pickle:

that's what tiger needs.
Sierra Quitiquit :pickle:

People tend to do a double-take when they see Sierra Quitiquit. Sure, it happens on sidewalks in Park City and in lift lines at Alta, but they also do it in front 100-foot-tall screens in Times Square, ads in Cosmo and TV commercials. Her blonde hair flows past her waist and demands attention. Her 5’10” frame is strong and feminine, and her feet are gnarly, gross, and destroyed by ski boots.

This thread still has to be one of the worst predictions this board has ever seen.
All your rejoicing and trolling won't erase the fact that your boy hasn't won a major in OVER FIVE YEARS. So jump up and down and act like a giddy school girl because he, predictable, won another meaningless tournament. Tiger would trade all five of his wins this year if he could just get back to doing what he used to be able to do-win a major.

Finless was dead on. Nicklaus' record is safe, and the others don't fear Tiger like they used to. And your trolling has gotten worse as you've aged. You used to be a lot better at it. :bye:
Sad that you A. still hold on to finless being dead on.

B...that you think this was a meaningless tourney.

Oh, and you seem to be the only one of you two trolling this one.

Actually...not one single person has made any of these tournaments "major-worthy".

It has consistently been the haters like you who diminish tournaments with this type of field of top players in it.

It was never "all" about the majors. EVER!!!

And comparing the John Deere with a WGC event with 48 of the top 50 players in the world on a course like Firestone demonstrates a level of cluelessness remarkable even for you.

"This is the first win he's ever been at," Woods said. "That's what makes it special for both of us."Daughter Sam was on hand when Woods won the U.S. Open in 2008, before his personal life imploded. Now Charlie will have some memories of dad in the winner's circle.

"They always say, 'Daddy, when are you going to win the tournament?' It was a few years there, or a couple years, I hadn't won anything," Woods said, smiling. "Are you leading or not? That's a stock question. 'Not leading.' 'Well, are you going to start leading?' 'Well, I'm trying."
Ha.

I never said it was 'meaningless'. Not once. I'm just not trying to make it the fifth major like you guys are. Since it's all that you have.

Nobody is making it out to be a fifth Major. Although the PGA Tour would have you believe that the Players is the fifth Major. Who won that this year?

Has Tiger Woods ever revealed what his personal barometer for a successful career is? I had thought it was "Pass Nicklaus in majors won -- all else is meanmingless except for in preparation for majors". Has he ever publicly given himself an out for that? Is he now focused on staying #1, being in the hunt 2 out of 3 tourneys, picking up 5-10 non-major wins a year, and not particularly focusing on that 19th major?

He would ABSOLUTELY give all five of his wins away to have won one of the majors.

His stated goal from when he was a child was that he wants to beat Jack's Major record. It's what keeps him motivated. He could have just as easily said that Sam Snead's 82 tour wins was his target, though that would have probably been even crazier. That said, anybody's goal is always to win the tournament they are currently playing.

THis need of casual observers to constantly frame the discussion about him not about what he's actually doing with the golf ball, but in historical terms, is ridiculous. Let's just enjoy watching greatness and let him play out his career before getting into history. It's still being written.

Breaking Snead's record just winning 6 Major's is HOF stuff alone in itself. Breaking both Snead's and Nicklaus' records is insane.

Tiger is in a position to do both.

FINISHED!!1
Did I miss the PGA Championship today?
No, that's next week.

You missed Tiger beating the field by 7 strokes.*

*He actually beat Phil by 16 strokes, and Rory by 17.
Thanks, was confused by the excitement in here. Watching non-major golf ranks right up there with watching NASCAR so I really didn't miss anything.
So you only watch the playoffs and the Superbowl and avoid the regular season? Outside of the 4 majors that are 10 or so events that are fantastic tournaments that all golf fans get excited for. So I'm guessing you don't know much about golf?
What I know about golf is that it generally is the suck to watch. I enjoy playing on occasion, but watching guys hit golf balls falls somewhere between watching guys make left turns and baseball. Soccer and football regular season games are much more exciting. The Hall of Fame game last night (which I didn't watch) crushed the Bridgestone in ratings.

Maybe golf should just be golf regardless of the tourney, but the anticipation and pressure of the majors bring a whole new entertainment angle to those tourneys.

Tiger finishes Saturday tied for third and Sunday tied for second. Plays well but can't quite get it done in the end. Don't think he'll collapse like at recent majors but won't be dominant either, and someone else will rise to the occasion.

This past weekend was, for all intents and purposes, Tiger's "Super Bowl". That is evident by the sheer joy shown by his groupies here.

No. They've been that way with every win in the last five years. They're all HUGE and he's always back.

I liked the Charlie thing. I think that was all about wanting him to have the memory and not even a little bit about how it looked. He did nothing to play that up.
No big Mickelson family group hug for the cameras?

We had to sit coach for the flight in.
I think it probably is a window into the difference between the two. Also saw a shot Saturday where he was walking by a camera between holes and everybody had their hands out and he ignored them like we are accustomed to seeing. Then as he was turning a corner out of sight put his hand out and slapped hands with people. That's something you never see him do on camera. He does not care about the camera and if anything it almost seems like he does the opposite of everything you see Phil doing. Definitely got the feeling that bringing Charlie out was a moment strictly between father and son. Everything else just a necessary nuisance.
Totally agree. And good for him. Unlike the Mickelson Family Show we see every few months, which every time feels to me like the beginning of the Brady Brunch with all the corny faces in the boxes.

Sorry Precious. Hope your crush wins next week so you can get over your five year cranky mood.

Junior still hasn't figured out the internet. He must had been in a rush before the allotted time of his computer use at home.

I know JuniorNB is assuming that, but when did Tiger say that?

As an aside, the answer to this question of Tiger's desires has no bearing on the thread premise.

I'm seeing a top 10 finish but no win for Tiger. At least thats how I'm envisioning it at the moment.

And again...no...not really.

The only ones who keep doing that are the few fools who try to diminish what that tournament actually was. By now overplaying it as the Super Bowl...or one claiming people are acting like it was a major.

But keep trying.

You, newbie and favreco are doing a heck of a job making yourselves look awful.

#1 in the world, wow he must be awful.

for the haters, do you have any doubt in your mind that Tiger will surpass Jacks record now?

Five years ago, I thought Jack's record was safe. But now that Tiger has gone 0-20 since then, I'm really nervous for Jack.

I'm no hater but I have doubts. He won zero majors in his mid-thirties, I don't expect him to win five in his late thirties and forties.

Are you fishing here Otis or does one of Tiger's greatest fans ever really not understand the importance that Tiger places on the majors?

If you believe BrainyQuote and ThinkExist they attribute these to Tiger:

The major championships have always been a special focus in my career, and as a professional, I think Augusta is where I need to be.

If money titles meant anything, I'd play more tournaments. The only thing that means a lot to me is winning. If I have more wins than anybody else and win more majors than anybody else in the same year, then it's been a good year.

You can win all the tournaments you want, but the majors are what you're remembered for. It's how you're measured as a champion in our sport. The majors are where it's at.

That's why I've busted my butt on the range for hours on end and made changes to get to this point where I'm able to compete at the highest level in major championships. That's where you want to be.
There is also the first 45 seconds of this video. He specifically states 4 times a year is the goal and he uses the other tournaments to prepare for the majors.

From Forbes

Tiger Woods is the number one ranked golfer in the world. He is also the highest-paid athlete in the world, at $65 million a year. And yet, neither of those two things really matter to him.As a boy, Woods famously had a poster of Jack Nicklaus in his room. It served as a reminder of his goal in his golf career: To top Nicklaus’s record of 18 major championship wins.
It's hard to understand but even though Tiger just utterly crushed the field sunday, he probably considers it a pyrrhic victory if he doesn't win a major this year. Tiger wants to win every tournament he enters, but the bar he judges himself against is Jack's major total. Tiger is still a dangerous golfer and probably has alot of golf left. I would not be shocked to see him break through again and go through another vintage Tiger-esque tear of tour dominance as he permanently etches his name as the most accomplished golfer ever.

What's odd however, is that it was pretty much a given 5 years ago. The question was not if he breaks Jack's record, it was by how much? Now with every year that slips by without a major the pressure and questions keeps building. What was once a sure thing could now possibly not happen. Tiger has pretty much checked off every goal on his bucket list except one, and that one just happens to be the first item on his list.

:goodposting: This. The WGC might not have been a major, but it was about as close as you can get without actually being one. A LOOOOOOOOOONGG way from "ham and egger"

Seems none of those quotes said he does not care at all about the other tournaments and its only about the majors.

Yes...his focus is the majors...his main goal...but bolded where he talks about the others with the majors and not as if they are just nothing.

Give it up, folks. You're never gonna convince the haters that there were wrong and Tiger is "back." This is just like the "LeBron is a choker" thing. Whenever the athlete does anything contrary to the haters' position, the haters just move the goalposts. Even after LeBron won a championship last year the haters were lining up to call him a choker when the Heat fell behind the Pacers and the Spurs. And even after Tiger wins another major in the next year or two, the haters will still line up to say he's not "back" the next time he finishes well back at a major. You can't win arguments with people like that, all you can do is laugh.

What you bolded was followed with an "and win more major wins that anyone else in the same year, then it's been a good year." So by Tiger's own definition he's had not good years for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and possibly 2013.

Also did you watch the video?

I try and peak 4 times a year. I try and peak for those for majors, and uh every event I enter is to win. So, you know I use the other tournaments as....um...yeah you try and win 'em and I have won tournaments in the past, but in the end I'm trying to get mind, body, and spirit all to come together for 4 weeks a year. If I get in for those 16 days, I think I'm going to have a pretty good career.
Interviewer: So 18 majors what would that mean to you?

TW: "I think that's the Holy Grail of our sport."

Moving the goalposts? Lol, who is moving the goalposts? The original post was:

He's done. He'll be competitive but he lost the fear factor. Looks like The Gold Bear might be out of the woods.
I take that as 2 predictions: Tiger will still be good but not invincible and Tiger won't break Jack's record. I consider the first a miss as Tiger is still the most dominant golfer in the world. Those saying he wins ham and egger tournies are knuckleheads. I consider the second prediction as accurate until Tiger beats Jack. But whatever, I guess I'm just a hater eh?

If anyone is moving the goalposts it's the fanboys who trumpet every tournament win with glee yet seem to gloss over the huge streak of major that slips by unwon.
