Tiger Woods (2 Viewers)

Two bogeys in a row.  Had decent par-saver putt opportunities on each, but they just didn't land.  Putter has cooled.

 
Got out of sync with his driver.  Will have to fix that.  But lots of guys other than Matsuyama were in the waste areas today.  Some tough driving holes.

Back nine was a shame because he was on fire before that. Could just as easily still be in this. 

 
Lots of good and bad here.  I think the key is his health and secondarily his confidence.  If he feels good after this weekend then hopefully the rust comes off over time.

How much did he hit his driver this week?  The majority of his misses that I saw were from the tee box.

Agree completely.  Getting around physically with no setbacks was huge, and from what I saw (not a whole lot) his short game looked pretty good.  I don't know that he can ever recapture the fear factor, but golf is a lot more fun to watch when he's playing well.

 
Great weekend for Tiger.  Fell off on Sunday, but fatigue from lack of playing (and being over 40) on that stage played a large part in that.  I hope he contends most weekends this season.  A Sunday challenge/surge at Augusta or the US Open would be fantastic TV.  

 
Hopefully a building block. There were some stretches of amazing golf out there. He just needs to extend those, and not come unglued with a couple of bad shots. Some better driver considtency also wouldn't hurt. 

 
He's back. He'll be crushing it now that he has the fear factor back. Looks like The Gold Bear is in trouble.

 
Sounds like fatigue played a significant role and being sick and losing weight before the event definitely didn't help that. I'm sure his stamina will significantly better by Torrey.

Driver could use a little tightening up, but his irons and putting were solid. 2017 should be fun to watch.

 
I saw enough to think he will be decent this year.  He made more birdies than anyone in the field this week.  The rust got him.  

I think he wins again.  Won't happen a lot, but he looks motivated.  Maybe one more major if the stars align.  The problem is that there are so many guys better than him now.

 
what was his avg driving distance?  SG T2G?  SG Putting?  How were his approaches from the red zone?  Yellow?  Green?  Par 5 Go-for-it %? 

 
He was knocking it past Rickie on Saturday.  Great to have him back.  "Golf shape" is a real thing.  He was obviously tired.

 
LOL...Went to look at the leaderboard after reading all the comments in this thread raving about how awesome he was.  Took awhile to scroll down that far.  I can only imagine the fever if he had finished 5th to last rather than 4th to last.

In other words, you didn't watch, right?  He looked good, looked healthy.  His swing was better, his balance much better.  Short game was decent - driving was his weakness.  It seemed obvious he has some rust/fatigue - he shot 10 under on the front for the week and 6 over on the back - some of that was the course but it seemed for sure some was fatigue.  Hell, he may never make a cut again but if you watched him this weekend I don't think you can say anything but it was a positive.

The only other thing I noticed with the above is that putter was looking very promising. 

Its been drilled all week but it makes you wonder what he could have done if he stuck with the Scotty his whole career.

Last time I checked Scotty doesn't make drivers.

Um he basically did.  He switched to a Nike putter for a little bit. But 13 of his Majors were with Scotty.  And a PING grip

Help out a non-golf guy.  Correct my misapprehensions.  I thought this "tournament" was a limited entry, Tiger approved the opponents, type of thing.  Low number of contestants, no cuts after the first two days, hand picked course suitable to Tiger's game since it is more or less his tournament, on a course he is able to practice on as much as he desired while the other golfers were out earning a living.  I thought this was a set up, like a college football player's pro day. I understood this was designed to make Tiger look good and that he still finished in the bottom half of the field, such as it was.  Am I off base?  If so, no need to be insulting since I truly do not know, just give me the straight poop.  Which is not to say you can't be insulting if you want, just that there is not some need to.  Not trolling, actually curious.

the field was increased to 18 players, consisting of the most recent winners of the four major PGA tournaments, the top 11 available players from the Official World Golf Ranking, the defending champion, and 2 special exemption players selected by the Foundation

I agree that's why I was shocked he didn't stay with it longer. Based on this article it reads as though he just switched back to it. 

Maybe there is more to the story.

Now that doesn't mean it's players 1-12 in the World Rankings - there are going to be guys that decline/turn it down etc.   And if Tiger doesn't get a big draw, the purse and donations may suffer.

This was not a hey let me just pick 15 guys to play golf against....

ETA: Then venue was picked prior to his return.  This is just the tournament he hosts and benefits his foundation. So yes it's his tournament but it's not a "winged" entry field

Four and a quarter miles on manicured lawns over 3+ hours does not strike me as real arduous, but what do I know.  Their 64 to 70 swings during that time are explosive and you don't see these guys sitting (Are they allowed to sit while waiting for play in front of them?) (If not disallowed by rules is it against etiquette?)

It's not that arduous, but try playing a game of Operation after a few hours. The golf swing and putting stroke are deceptively delicate moves. Nobody is saying you can't swing a club or make a putt, just that it's more difficult to do it exactly as you want.

Certainly I am not well schooled in the subtleties of the game having only played a score or so times in my life.  that's why I ask.  Still, seems pretty low on the physically challenging scale.  a pleasant stroll. nothing more.  As for the mental challenge, they have caddies and coaches, yes, and money rewards to help them focus, huge money rewards that then lead to some of the worlds finest women, or so I have heard. 

I am going to chalk this one up to there I some things I cannot grasp absent greater exposure to the thing. I do appreciate the perspective you and belljr have tried to give me.  Sometimes that effort is frustrating when you are trying to educate a person without the references to truly understand so thanks for taking the time.
