2.21: Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels in Tootsie (Dramatic Actor in a Comedic Role)

Throughout the 1970s, Dustin Hoffman had become one of Hollywood's (and especially the foreign press's) most acclaimed dramatic actors. Before Tootsie, Hoffman had taken a few years off from film and was casting about for a fresh new challenge. In the meantime, Hoffman partnered with director Dirk Richards in a company that developed non-cinematic intellectual property for film. Richards showed Hoffman an early draft of a script for what would become Tootsie, which Richards was co-writing. Hoffman asked for, and received, complete creative control over the project from that point forward.

...

Michael Dorsey: You should have seen the look on her face when she thought I was a lesbian.
George Fields (Dorsey's agent): "Lesbian"? You just said gay.
Michael: No, no, no - SANDY thinks I'm gay, JULIE thinks I'm a lesbian.
George: I thought Dorothy was supposed to be straight?
Michael: Dorothy IS straight. Tonight Les, the sweetest, nicest man in the world asked me to marry him.
George: A guy named Les wants YOU to marry him?
Michael: No, no, no - he wants to marry Dorothy.
George: Does he know she's a lesbian?
Michael: Dorothy's NOT a lesbian.
George: I know that, does HE know that?
Michael: Know WHAT?
George: That, er, I... I don't know.

2.23 - Spiderman 2 - Superhero

Where the Batman movies come off self-important I find the Spiderman movies much more self-aware and thus, more enjoyable. Spiderman 2 is the best of the Raimi Spiderman movies and my favorite superhero movie by far and it's not even close.

I just watched it again a couple weeks ago and realized I'd forgotten just how EPIC it really is.

2.25 Charlie Chaplin (Unite) Monologue from The Great Dictator---Monologue

I will make my next pick in a bit...don't bother waiting for me though.

3.3 - Triumph of the Will (Triumph des Willens) - Nazis

Film historians debate whether or not it's a documentary or if it's pure propaganda but whatever it is it's a visualization of exactly how the Nazi's saw themselves and Adolph Hitler - as gods.

Hitler commissioned the film and served as an unofficial executive producer; his name appears in the opening titles. He praised the film as being an "incomparable glorification of the power and beauty of our Movement".

The overriding theme of the film is the return of Germany as a great power, with Hitler as the True German Leader who will bring glory to the nation.

Riefenstahl's techniques, such as moving cameras, the use of long focus lenses to create a distorted perspective, aerial photography, and revolutionary approach to the use of music and cinematography, have earned Triumph recognition as one of the greatest films in history. The film was popular in the Third Reich and elsewhere, and has continued to influence movies, documentaries, and commercials to this day. The film spent six months in the editing suite. The two-hour running time represents approximately 3% of the footage Leni Riefenstahl shot.

Viewed today as a film itself, it's not very good. But viewed in context it's the quintessential document showing the sway that the Nazis had on the German population at the time.

This is THE Nazi film.

3.1 Boogie Nights ---- Sex Movie

I really hate taking the first thing in this category, but I love this movie and I did not want to end up with a teenie bopper thing.

HATE the multiple roles category. I should have held my ground and vetoed that one. There's going to be like 4 really good picks (The Great Dictator would have been one of them, and 21 really terrible picks.

#### it. Now I'm going to punt it until the end of the draft.

I don't know, I had a few more in mind before I settled on Adaptation. There are at least three pretty good ones left.

Thought I'd get SOME comment on Spiderman and Triumph... :kicksrock:
Was hoping Triumph would slip. No way to tell how it will be judged since it was a docuganda. Not sure how I feel about Spidey 2. I think there are way better superhero movies out there that CAN be taken. But that is my opinion which clearly is different than yours.

This is one of the categories that I feel really stumped at

Interesting. All i know is that the only superhero movie that scored higher on Rotten Tomatoes was The Dark Knight, and that only by 1%. Spiderman 2 even beat The Avengers.

Triumph of the Will is a tremendous and important documentary.

BUT- a warning. This is a VERY deep category. So far all of the films chosen have been excellent. If that keeps up, some people are going to be really disappointed when the judging comes around.

I'm not really concerned about that. The draft is always more interesting than the judging, IMO.

But it would seem silly to me that a movie commissioned by the Nazis for the Nazis could lose out to something else in the category of "Nazis".

Grrr. I guess it's appropriate I got sniped on a Nazi film. I thought this would last a while.

Not if you read my criteria. This is not simply an evaluation of which film is the most Naziish.

I think I figured out the disconnect.

Here's an interesting experiment, first suggested to me by a teacher back in college: when you watch Triumph of the Will, pay close attention to Julius Streicher, Hermann Goering, and Rudolph Hess. Then immediately afterward watch tape from the Nuremberg trials. The disintegration of these three, from triumphant rulers to beaten criminals in the dock, is an education.

Didn't know how a doc would do in categories.

Spidey 2 is my favorite of the series for sure. I think it's a bold statement to claim it as the best in the genre, but what do I know - I liked Batman Begins the best of the new ones, and have soured on The Avengers. Spidey 2 and another unpicked movie are 2 that I was considering with more of a 'normal' superhero pick. I wrote down 4-5 odd ones that I like at the end of the draft, but probably won't score as well.

Tim, I will judge car chase and shocking scene if you need more judges.
What are you looking for on this one - as in "WTF was that?", "i can't believe that is in a movie", "i never saw that twist coming", or yes to any of the above??

BTW - on judging for scene shooting another movie: documentaries will not score very high on this one, and I would avoid taking one.

On that note - Boogie Nights also had some great scenes for this category too. Damn I love that movie.

Make-up pick:

3.05: Steve McQueen vs. Edward G. Robinson in the final hand of The Cincinnati Kid (Gambling Scene)

. But I did enjoy this old Cecil Adams column about it (watch the youtube link first before reading the column):
Dear Cecil:

I've got a bet with my poker buddies. What hand did Steve McQueen lose to Edward G. Robinson's straight flush in the movie The Cincinnati Kid?

— John F., Washington, D.C.

Cecil replies:

My usual cut on bets is 20 percent.

Robinson was showing the eight, nine, ten, and queen of diamonds; McQueen the ace of clubs, the ace of spades, the ten of clubs, and the ten of spades. On the call, Robinson shows the jack of diamonds for a straight flush, beating McQueen who turns up the ace of diamonds for a full house. "You owe me five thousand dollars, kid," Robinson purrs, as McQueen breaks out in hives.
