Criteria for best sports scene:

Needs to be a real sport or real competition. I will allow most things that have a world championship, but it should include some degree of athleticism. I am not going to view a Poker World Championship favorably (we have the gambling category for that).

The scene need to fit in the context of the movie, a random event, no matter how awesome will be downgraded (so no reason to draft a scene where the lead actor watches a hockey game, by himself, if it doesn't fit in)

Realism is key. I doubt Shin-Yoo Koo hits a 4.25 mile homerun, or Lavarr Arrington has a 62 second hang time. I will allow a little artistic freedom, but not a lot.

Quality of the shot/scene. Is it well made, does it make me feel I'm there? Does it capture the feelings of the people that was there enough so that they are reliving the moment?

Cinematic quality. How well is the scene shot?

Positives: world wide appeal, because I want the movie to be a success in multiple markets (I will not put a number on how many countries or participants, PM with any questions)

Negatives: narrow local sports might get penalized (like caribou curling) unless the scene and movie is exceptional.

Documentaries are very much allowed, as there are many excellent examples. Documentaries are not eligible after discussions and butt hurt.

Dramatic films based on real events are good (not too many artistic freedoms please)

Scoring (1-10 scale):

How well does the scene fit in the movie?

Quality of the scene?

Realism? (-10 - 10 scale)

World Wide appeal? (-10 - 10 scale)

Cinematic quality?

Max points will be 50.

I can't believe this was still available.

It was going to be my next pick.

I think X2 gets shortchanged because of how ridiculously bad X3 turned out. Like, X3 was so much of a disaster that its miserableness couldn't be contained within one film and the remainder spilled over into X2 retroactively. The Nolan Batman trilogy turning out so well kind of diminishes it as well. Dark Knight was definitely better than it, but I would take X2 over Begins and Rises without hesitation. But again, X3 being so bad (and X-Men being kind of 'meh') doesn't do X2 any favors as time goes on. Marvel and Sony splitting the Marvel Universe also hurts.

So when you look at modern comic book franchises, there's Nolanverse Batman (top of the heap), the Avenger's films (a distinct flavor of crossover awesome), and Rami's Spider-Man trilogy (the first). You have a whole lot of really memorable, really bad franchise attempts as well. And then there's X-Men, which is middling about in mediocrity with two good-to-great films (X2, First Class), one alright film (X-Men), an outright disaster (X3), and a pretty bad spinoff (Wolverine, although the sequel looks alright). In a lot of ways it mirrors how the X-Men franchise has been handled in comics over the same period of time. For every New X-Men or Dark Angel Saga we've gotten a [anything dealing with Hope].

Lagaan was the first Bollywood movie I ever saw, and is still the only good one I've seen. It took a lot of convincing from an Bengali friend, but I'm glad I gave in. Movie was great and this pick is great. Better than the documentary, I think.
