timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (5 Viewers)

15.19 - Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke - Drugs

Lots of serious drug movies taken. Not mine.
Now THIS is a great pick. Ever seen the weird old guy, kind of looks a little like Donald Sutherland, who sits next to Jack Nicholson at Laker games? That's the director, Lou Adler. He was also the guy who produced Carole King's Tapestry album. And he owns the Roxy theater.
Wow... impressive resume.

15.25 - The Bar shootout from Desperado, Shootout

Been holding on to this one for a while. This movie is as badass as they come. The shootout is bloody, extreme, and very original.

, DrugsIntense. A must see.

Seventeen-year-old Colombian girl María Álvarez works in sweat shop-like conditions at a flower plantation. Her income helps support her family, including an unemployed sister who is a single mother. María becomes pregnant by a man who doesn't love her, as he proposes to marry her but declines because she does not love him. After unjust treatment from her boss she quits her job dethorning roses despite her family's vehement disapproval. On her way to Bogota' to find a new job, she is offered a position as a drug mule. Desperate, she accepts the risky offer, and swallows 62 wrapped pellets of heroin and flies to NYC with her immature friend Blanca, who has also been recruited as a drug mule.

Criteria for Dance Scene:

1) should be one of the most memorable scenes of the movie, if not most memorable

2) should be relevant to the movie

3) if it is one of my favorites it will score high (looking at some of my picks, it may be easy to know the genre of movies i like)

so far everyone who has posted for dance scenes fit the criteria, and some def stand out to me more than others. If you have any questions, let me know!!! cant wait to re-watch some of these movies!!!!

I was looking at the video for my pick (Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling), and came upon this one showing how they did it - they used a rotating room. Very clever.

12.19 Anna Paquin in The Piano (1992) (Child Actor)

Nowadays we all know her as Rogue or Sookie from True Blood, but as an 11-year-old, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Flora McGrath, a Scottish girl exiled to New Zealand when her mother (played by Holly Hunter, who won the Oscar for Best Actress, a rare two-fer from one film) is forced into an arranged marriage. Paquin's reactions to cues and her delivery of dialogue are spot-on. The movie also happens to be intense and moving, which doesn't hurt at all. With a bad child actor in the role, this one could have suffered considerably, but Paquin made sure that didn't happen.

13.07 The Italian Job (1969) (Car Chase)

The original version, starring Michael Caine, has car chases throughout, but culminates in a killer sequence in the Turin Alps that is apparently only lightly edited. There are some flashier, CGI-laden picks still on the board, but along with Bullitt, this movie put the car chase on the map. Plus: Cooper Minis!

Will try to find a link later as YouTube is not my friend today.

Question: I know we can switch scenes from 1 category to another, but if I picked a scene from a specific movie, can I pick a different scene from that same movie and switch categories?

I would say yes, but I dont know if it has been discussed

Just antipating the backlash. It's not my call and I'll make one comment and move on, but I can't see why a music video would be eligible for a movie draft. The fact that it was played in the theatre as an "opening act" for an actual movie shoudln't change that. My guess is tim's response wasn't in this context.

Anyway if it's allowed, I'll applaud your inovation and outside the box thinking.

15.22 Do You Like Phil Collins?, American Psycho (Monologue)

The link has all three music monologues, but my choice is definitely the middle one discussing Phil Collins & Genesis.
I really disliked this movie as a whole, but there are parts that are really great - like this part.

"TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU STUPID *******!"

Anyone notice that he acts a lot like Brent Spiner (the guy who played Data in Star Trek) in this scene?

Thriller. I made the rule and I admire the outside the box thinking, but allowing a video wasn't my intent for this draft. You're supposed to pick a dance scene from a movie. Please pick again.

Thriller is a mini-movie so it is a movie. Was it stated somewhere in the draft the movie must be full-length?

I thought about taking Thriller and as close as it gets to being a movie I think it violates the spirit of the draft even if it tickles the line of the letter of it.

It was not stated, and that's why I decided to allow the Winnie the Pooh pick. That was from a short film that was released in theaters, ala Looney Tunes. Short films really wasn't what I had in mind, but it is eligible. (Besides, the short film, "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day", became part of a feature length film later on.)

But Thriller being in a movie theater was a stunt. It was a video designed for television, and they put it in the movies in order to make it eligible for the Oscars. I think that's pretty cheap, myself, though that's neither here nor there. What's important for this draft is that it's a video. Please repick.

16.06 Bert Dances with the Penguin Waitstaff (Mary Poppins) - Dance Scene

This is one of my wife's favorite movies so I've seen it many times with her and the boy. This is one of my favorite scences. **** Van Dyke is a talented man and this scene is iconic.

Incidently we saw the Broadway version of Mary Poppins a few months back and they replaced this scene with a scence where the statues in the park came to life and danced around. Most of them were man wearing grey and bronze skin tight suits that left little to the imagination. Having good close seats made it quite disturbing.

16.07 - Highlander -

- Romantic GestureHe stays young, she grows old. He doesn't care. Then she dies, and he lights a candle every year on her birthday (and is still doing it hundreds of years later).

Who wants to live forever??
