FINALLY got to Arlington. I think as I was running around in the dark top-side, I was showing things on the map, but not really exploring them. I think I was just avoiding going back down in the tunnels that night. If you get to Falls Church, there is a short metro tunnel at Falls Church North. It looks like it is a dead end, but there is a bigger room with a couple Ghouls and there is a tunnel off to the back right of the room. Takes you right to Arlington.

Got the Luck bobblehead at Arlington house and shot up some Chinese ghouls at the food factory. Loaded up on some chinese assault rifles, so that was good. One of the bastards snuck up on me somehow, and startled me enough that I actually jumped off the couch a bit.

After that I hit up Canterbury Commons and took care of those two freaks. Added some caps to a couple of the traders to see if any of their wares would actually get better - never had done that before.
I did that for the weapons guy. His stock got a little bit better but in the end you can pick up everything he sells though.
What is this? I'm not understanding...
If you go to Canterbury Commons you can invest in the trade caravans by talking to the guy running the place. When you do it gives them more money to get stock and so they have better or more stuff. I tried it with the weapons guy. I think I gave 500 caps and he got some better stuff next time I saw him. Oh yeah and you get a discount from the vendor as well for your investment. Don't know what happens is you really throw some caps at them.
Ah, I remember that. I think I did that but I have never been back since I killed the ant lady. Guess I will have to check out if my investment paid off in any way - not that I remember what in the hell I invested in.
You can catch up with them at any settlement. But it's easiest at Megaton. Although as you mentioned with it being creature feature every time you exit they seem less inclined to stop there.
So I think this generally happens if you have a random encounter and them lead them back to Megaton. My theory is that if you get attacked again and lead them away before killing them that they won't show up again. Just a theory though.
Hmmm. Might try that.

Of course, the last time I opened that front door there were two deathclaws in my face mid punch as the screen opened to me standing there. Video game adreneline kicks in at that point, VATS goes on, and the Compbat Shotgun in place makes Spam of the head of same. And just try stopping Fawkes when he gets the chance to shoot something. Guy gets off on it.

I pretty much kill everything I encounter. Last time I went out there was a yaogaui, a mole, a couple of ants and a protecteron. Lot's of scorpions show up. Still I haven't tried leading them away so I don't know if that will work.

My theory might not be correct. But I noticed this once. I had a random encounter with some raiders behind Megaton and I was pretty weak at that point, so I ran back towards Megaton for the sniper support. It was three raiders, and one had a missile launcher. I started noticing that these same three raiders would show up outside Megaton every so often, so that is where my theory was born from.

Yeah, pretty sure that is what I gave him too. I think that was 2 levels when you were talking to the guy - 1st was 200 or something?

What the hell, for ####s and giggles I will try to track him down now and see what he has, then go pump some more caps into the investment and see if it changes at all.

ETA: is there a way to predict where a certain vendor will be on their route? Also, when anybody has not cared about their karma level, have you broken into the containers that have the vendor's wares on Canterbury Commons?

Are there perks that you guys just don't do or haven't tried?

I suck with hand to hand, so I have never done anything with a melee weapon since the initial vault. Just curious on opinions on fun perks I might not be bothering with. Usually go with sniper perk, increase criticals, etc.. but also wonder about the weird ones like cannibal (if you are going the bad route), Animal friend, etc..

Animal friend is only good if you don't want to be bothered by Yao Gaui, etc. Having them attack other people for you just doesn't really work because you are rarely in a situation where you there are both animals and Raiders, etc.

yeah. One of those perks that cool in theory but never really needed in an unmodded game. Hopefully on ps4 the memory will allow for more NPCs on the screen at once. I can't wait for the day when it's me, 2 companions Vs a nest of death claws, a cazadore family, and some paid mercenaries. That's when the right perks will be boss.

Damn did I hate those things.

I haven't used a hand weapon like sword or pipe the entire game. So I never paid attention to anything for those things. REally didn't up small arms at all either. I stuck mainly to intellect typs stuff and strength so that I could carry more.

The only points i put in melee came from reading books. I never melee. I concentrated early on on small weapons, explosives, and lockpick. I ignored speech for a while but I think I'll go differently next time. I feel like in these kinds of games you miss out when your speech is too low. When I restart New Vegas I will lean on speech from the beginning. Seems more important than it was in FO3.

Yeah, speech is huge in this game. Hell, one of the most important spots of the main quest really really needs high speech.

Forgot to mention that I finished the NukaCola challenge. Gave them to the boyfriend all at once, all 30. Got a ton of money and then negative karma. Really? Negative Karma? I disarmed a nuclear ****ing bomb, killed about 500 raiders, and have almost made extinct the mutant bug population - not to mention killed some cannabels, some wierd chick in an ant uniform and gave the homeless guy in front of Megaton fresh clean cool water like every day. And I get negative Karma for helping a video-game-bro get laid? Pfft.

Although, the script after he gave her the stuff was funny as hell. And then, once I stopped laughing, since I already had negative karma, I almost blew both of their heads off. I still might.

Also finished up Agatha's song. Had already been in that vault and it felt like the violin was really the only thing I hadn't found in there. Dead mirelurks everywhere, nothing to find in any box and then.... boom, violin. And all I get is a radio frequency? Really? Should have shot her too.

To get the gun you have to bring back the sheet music. It is in the same vault as the violin. You can find some in the Academy as well. But yeah to get the good stuff you need the sheet music.

On the Nuka cola thing I didn't realize you got negative karma for giving it to the dude but he was such a doosh I never considered it.

Looked and didn't see it anywhere. Shouldn't the music be with the violin? Or at least within a few room of it? I found nothing. I remember there being something if you found music so I even went back to the Springvale school thinking, hey, it was a school. Gotta have a music room....... nope. Didn't think of the academy. Maybe I'll look around for it. Maybe not. I really feel the need to just start shooting everyone that annoys at this point.

The sheet music is in the living quarters in the male dorm bathroom.

So I may as well start a problem in another thread. I got screwed on the Call of Juarez. It must have been a short lived sale. It looked fun but I wasn't spending 14.99 on a 15 hour game. I noticed Deus Ex was on sale for 4 and some change. I think Chaka got on me and said I should try it. So I went ahead and picked up. Played a bit of it. Reminds me of Rage a bit. Will restart when I am serious. This seems like a 40-50 hour game. But I have seen people say you can finish in 20. Still for 4 bucks it seems to be worth it. Warning I may mention it again and I may even talk about playing it. If you intend to be offended sucks to be you.

Andy d told me to get dues ex human revolution. I played it for about 4 hours and haven't looked at it again. Fallout is infinitely better

Yeah I played for like two hours. I kind of hate games that send you into a situation with a gun but give you no ammo. You can't pick up ammo. Well you can put it's one bullet here two there kind of thing. That really pisses me off. I mean yes I get wanting to limit ammo. But I would never in a million years go into a hostage situation with 15-20 perps and take virtually no ammo. It's kind of stupid. It seems like they want to force the stealth stuff on you. I like to play my own style. I told the guy I wasn't looking for a stealth solution. But here we are. So we'll see. I'll try again after I wrap up FO3 and probably New Vegas at this point. I was looking for something to do in between but not sure this is going to get it done. Wanted something short but fun. Not feeling the fun right now.

I find myself picking up the same perks Especially Intensive training to get a SPECIAL to the threshold of a perk requirement ie: Strong Back requires 6 Endurance (I think) but I never start with that much End so I add to it along the way.

I never get any perk that simply add points to a skill - that's what level ups and skill books are for. If you play several times through you'll eventually value perks that change up dialogue more just for the variety.

LOL damn dude slow down.

Sheet music at both places you checked out.

May have to fire this up again and go melee or unarmed - there's so many enemies out of reach not sure how I can do it - but it would free up a lot of inventory, perks, skill points and ammo. Can't even imagine taking on a deathclaw unarmed.

I think my endurance is always at 1 when I play.

My SPECIAL is always lopsided when I start (High luck, INT, Agility) and then I balance/upgrade as I go. I never play with big guns so Endurance isn't important for that part, but I also don't play with a house so I need to carry a lot and Strong Back is crucial.

I shorted luck big time. I think I set it to one and used the points elsewhere.

Luck impacts everything. I set it to 7 usually and then work it up to 9. Scrounger (more ammo) and Better Criticals (+50% damage on critical hits) aretwo perks I usually get and they have Luck requirements.

Anything out on Fallout 4?

When I bought F03 originally I couldn't get the add-ons to load so I recently bought the goty edition and have been playing it again from scratch. Nice. Having an issue with mothership zeta which I'll eventually crack. It's an awesome game.

Found Arlington cemetery. Didn't even realize it was on the map. This game is huge.

Killed everything there. Went to the house. Killed the guy there. He had a name. We didn't talk. Found bobble head.

Then found the food factory. Chinese zombies. Awesome. Fun that there area. SHould have been on the main quest somehow.

Killed everything there. Went to the house. Killed the guy there. He had a name. We didn't talk. Found bobble head.

Then found the food factory. Chinese zombies. Awesome. Fun that there area. SHould have been on the main quest somehow.
You doing the Lawbringer thing? I shot that dude down while sleeping and grabbed his finger, stumbled upon a dead dude with a bounty slip about that guy, and took his finger to the house for 1000caps.

I find myself picking up the same perks Especially Intensive training to get a SPECIAL to the threshold of a perk requirement ie: Strong Back requires 6 Endurance (I think) but I never start with that much End so I add to it along the way.I never get any perk that simply add points to a skill - that's what level ups and skill books are for. If you play several times through you'll eventually value perks that change up dialogue more just for the variety.
huh.

Yeah I may change it up next time. The more I read after i started the more impact I realized luck had.

IIRC, for Luck you want to have it an even number or it's pointless. It takes increments of 2 to see any benefit, I think I read that on a wiki site. There are of course ways to raise it such as the 8 ball you can get in Bigtown.

I always make sure to pour my points into speech, hacking & safe cracking. Speech is extremely important, unlocks tons more story options and can shorten a lot quests or save lives. same reasoning on Perks, Child At Heart unlocks a lot more options and can shorten up some quests like Little Lamplight or Oasis and Lady Killer/Black Widow give you some fun dialogue. Bloody Mess is essential just for making the game even more fun IMO. Nothing more satisfying then seeing people or mutants explode in a gory mess. After raising my main skills I pour points into all other classes except melee, big weapons and other combat classes until the end. Having things like high explosives and medicine early can make certain quests much easier/quicker.

There's an optimal build on a wiki where you can get every skill to 100 if you want to take the time.

Also Luck is great for lots of things. You find better stuff in boxes or scrounging, better critical hits, and I love Mysterious Stranger, James Bond music is great.

Luck is also important for random encounters, I think there are certain rare types that are much more likely to be triggered with high Luck.

Random encounters have a single specific spot on the map they are associated with, but can be set to spawn the encounter anywhere within a radius from that point. So you can get some variation of location based on that but I don't think it's normally a huge distance. But after they have spawned, the NPCs could be set to further wander randomly (or not) on their own, or even to travel to a specific destination. Since respawn times are probably in days or weeks, they could roam pretty far if you don't encounter them soon after the respawn.

But you will tend to find the same kind of things in the same general areas. The encounters are based off of lists, that can include a level dependence so the NPCs advance as you do. IIRC, there are pretty much always 3 raiders to the north of Megaton. If you advance the stat that increases your detection distance, you'll see them on your radar a lot.

It definitely could play a role. The lists from which random stuff is selected can include percent chance something appears. Like a bandit's list might be to choose 1 weapon from the random weapon list, 2 pieces of armor from the random bandit armor lists, and a 10% chance to have a grenade from the random grenade list and a 20% chance to have some kind of chems.

When I did my Skyrim edits, I made a global variable to hold the odds of getting a magic item in any random batch of treasure, and switched all the lists to use that amount so I could change it quickly in one spot. I think you could probably add Luck into all the odds in that fashion.

stupid rookie question:

does the intense training perk also raise up the skills it effects when you take it? was just thinking that it might be one of better perks, but I never really took it because I wasn't smart enough to think about how the special levels effect perks.

Well all of the specials affect something. Intelligence plays into repair, medicine and science.. Strength affects ability to carry of course but also is an important part of melee. Charisma affects your ability to win speech challenges and how well you when bartering. Luck affects everything a little bit. Agility affects small guns, sneak and how many action points you have. Endurance is big guns, hit points and resistance. Perception affects lock pick, energy weapons and explosive skills. So I think I got them all. So it's easy to see which skills would be enhanced with each SPECIAL.

So for example if you have a Perception of ten you get the following boosts to skills - Energy Weapons +20, Explosives +20, Lockpick +20. You can look on the Wiki for all this to do deeper planning.

I guess my question is more:

when I take an IT perk, do I also get an instant boost to the skills effected? ie, if I add 1 to my endurance, do I get a 3pt boost ( just a random #) to my health & big gun skills? or is it more a boost when you get to a certain level for that Special?

Just think of the perk as raising your Intelligence (or whichever you choose) by 1 permanently. You get the exact same benefits from doing so as if you'd made your Intelligence that during chargen. Which includes the bonuses to skills based on the stat.

Every point in a SPECIAL gives you a bonus in a set of skills. I think except luck that is every two points IIRC.

Not at all. In fact most character build guides suggest limiting your use of Training as you can get a lot out of the perks without putting points there. I used it a bit to raise a couple of SPECIALS I shorted to start with. But not much after that. And really long before I hit top level I was near impossible to kill. I feel like I missed some perks I might have liked to have because I used Training. Limited levels mean choices, you can't get everything.

I think the main mistake I made was not paying attention to it for perks that I might not have been able to get because I was 1 or 2 away in SPECIALS. a handful of times I would level up and not like my perk choices.

Yes, but not enough for that to be the reason to take it. It raises the SPECIAL attribute by one - which can be useful to hit certain threshholds are buff up ones neglected at start. But then it only raises the affected skills (say, Repair) by 2 points for the attribute (INT in this case). So there are much better ways to raise Repair than using a perk to raise Intelligence.
so its essentially like getting 1 special and reading a couple books.

Yeah you can definitely get caught out on that. I did. I wanted a perk but needed to up my luck, In the end I skipped it.

Geez, take a few days off and find out the thread has moved because of a few whiny pukes. That's fine, I get more of my FO fix here. I did end up firing up the game, and have mostly been wandering around trying to discover stuff before I do too much of the main mission. I've gone to GNR for the main mission but that's it so far, I haven't gotten 3 Dog what he needs. I have my house in Megaton, I found Dogmeat, and I found the Alien Blaster in a stroke of luck because I was up on some rocks and looked down. The radiation almost killed me, though, as I had some from clearing out that power plant just before I got to the spaceship.

I'm Level 8, almost to 9, but I must be doing something wrong because I'm still not very tough, I'm broke, and I don't have much in the way of armor. I did just get the Strong Back perk and that's helped me make more money since I don't have to drop so much stuff while I'm in the middle of a side quest and can't get back to Megaton right away. I also think I'm carrying too many guns from reading what you guys are saying - sounds like about 3 different kinds should do it for me. Sadly, Dogmeat has already died a bunch of times for me and made me go back to my previous save, as I just got him so I want to hang with him for a while. I don't know if the GOTY edition nerfed his superdogness, but he's not nearly as tough as I'd been reading on the thread - either that or I suck at helping him.

This world is enormous, and traveling around is almost as much fun as doing the actual quests. I think I'm going to try and spend a few sessions just wandering around and discovering so I can put more markers on my map. Of course, I have no idea if some of those places are way beyond my level, though - I discovered Agatha's house by accident and got the violin quest, then found Vault 92 when I was trying to go as far North as I could before the game stopped me, but Dogmeat died dang near the moment we got in there, so I wasn't sure if it was beyond my level or not. I just reloaded and backed out of the vault, then immediately ran into my first Deathclaw when I got out, got pounded, and reloaded again so I could skirt him.

I tend to take my time, so I'm sure I'll have far more hours in this when I'm done than the normal gamer might - I hate missing out on stuff so I go through rooms with a fine-tooth comb.

I'm definitely going to try the regular USB drive thing. I have a 32GB drive in my 360 now but got the "need a hard drive" error. I think I have a 16GB one that I can reformat and try, as I'd really like to add the DLC.

Love this thread :blackdot:

Great timing actually. Looks like my son accidently broke the usb stick I was using to save my last few games. After sneaking in his room and putting a grenade in his pocket while he was sleeping, this will be the perfect time to get non-xbox stick to see if I can get that to download the game of the year editions. Also will probably try to go the evil route and see what that does. Might even try that cannibal perk.

Two questions:

1. If I start another game tonight, get a usb in the next couple days and the DLC works, will it add on the content right over my saved game, or will I have to restart?

2. About Luck: is there a huge benefit to having it over 5? Looks like the perks for extra ammo and caps in containers requires 5, and the extra criticals perk doesn't require anything and gives you 5 extra luck in combat. Doesn't seem like you need much more than that, and can still get the bobblehead in Arlington. Am I missing something?

1 I think ti will just load the extra content. I don't think you'll have to restart.

2. On luck I think if you go that way just enough for the perk is what most recommend. Go to 5 add the booblehead and you are good. But that is based on others opinions as I said I shorted luck.

I think 5 or 7 is optimal depending on how much you want to put towards other Specials. You can then add the Bobblehead, the Lucky Shades & the Lucky 8 Ball. The shades are easy to acquire, in a wasteland rundown store near TenPenny I believe. The 8 Ball is harder, have to complete the quest in Big Town (one of the harder/more annoying ones) and talk to a particular NPC if I recall.

Y'all are making me wanna fire up FO3 or New Vegas again.
