Top 5 Christmas Movies (1 Viewer)

Two B&W oldies that i never let a holiday season go by without seeing deserve mention:

The Bishop's Wife - Cary Grant, Loretta Young, David Niven. A quiet but resonant melodrama that gets me in a Christmas mood better than anything short of Wonderful Life & Christmas Story

Lemon Drop Kid - Bob Hope is perfect as a Damon Runyan character who sets up a fake Christmas charity with street Santas to pay a mob debt due on Christmas Eve. Few get happiness from a screen like i do when i put this ol' chestnut on each year as my only inviolable Christmas tradition.

Charlie Brown is an Xmas special, not really a movie. No?

It would be my top XMas special for sure but don't consider it a movie by any means.

charlie brown christmas! come on people
its a classic.. great filmbut its not very re-watchable..
oh really? my 3 year old disagrees
If this is the standard, then the Caillou Holiday Movie is the greatest film ever created.
yeah but re-watching peanuts gang isnt anywhere near the annoyance that Caillou is
I actually just watched the Charlie Brown one the other night, for the first time in a few years probably, and was surprised at how un-entertaining it was.

Scrooge - 1951 starring Alistair Sim as the title character. Widely regarded as the best film version of a Christmas Carol.

Christmas Vacation - It's a bit nippley in here.

Grinch - The animated version. Lighten up it's a 22 minute animated film.

Charlie Brown Christmas - see above.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - Lighten up it's a 44 minute stop action film.

Frosty would make the top ten

Christmas Vacation

Bad Santa

Elf (distant 3rd)

Those are the only 3 I care to watch. Loved Christmas Story as a kid, but have zero interest anymore. I'd never willingly watch it now (sadly, the wife doesn't feel the same way)

Oh, if it counts, The Family Stone. Love that movie, esp. around the holidays.

Apparently I'm the only one who likes Fred Claus. I'll watch almost anything with VV in it and usually like it.

It's a Wonderful Life

Home Alone

Elf

Grinch (Either version)

A Christmas Story

Home AloneChristmas VacationA Christmas StoryDie HardBad Santaseems about right.
This one... perhaps swap Die Hard out for Elf.... Not for lack of John McClain... just not sure it's really a "Christmas Movie". Oh and nix Home alone for...well...anything.

Die Hard

Damn hard to leave out Love Actually
Surprised this is only mentioned once so far.One of the few Christmas movies that I actually make it a point to watch this time of year.

Also not sure if it has been mentioned, but "Home for the Holidays" (1995) is a pretty good movie.

ETA: Sorry, I guess Home for the Holidays" is more Thanksgiving than Christmas. Stilla good flick.

1. Christmas Vacation - this is not only my favorite Christmas movie, but my all time favorite comedy. I have seen it nearly 50 times

2. Elf - Hilarious and I can watch it with the kids, too. Plus I'm in love with Zoey Daschnel.

3. It's a Wonderful Life - A freaking classic that I can't miss every year.

4. A Christmas Story - Timeless tale...my 6 year old son wants a bb gun this year.

5. Scrooged - I'm a big Bill Murray fan and the modern twist on the classic story was fun.

This would be my list, except I'd replace Elf with The Grinch. Honesly, I've never seen Elf (I have it set to tape on the DVR coming up) so that may change my list. It's a Wonderful Life is next on my list. Also a classic. It does drag at times as old movies do, but you can't beat the creshendo at climax of that movie (at least in a sentimental sense).

1) A Christmas Story

2) Christmas Vacation

3) 4 Christmases

4) Home Alone

5) Scrooged

I also enjoyed Bad Santa, Elf and It's A Wonderful Life

:goodposting: Maybe you had to be a kid when you first saw it or something, but c'mon, it features a kid pwning a couple of burglars by boobytrapping his entire house. What's not to love?

By the way, I just rented Arther Christmas last weekend to watch with my kids. Holy crap, I haven't belly laughed to a movie like that in a long time. But I'm a sucker for slapstick. I loved this movie.

My faves:

1. It's A Wonderful Life

2. A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version)

3. A Christmas Story

4. Home Alone

5. Miracle on 34th (1947)

Honorable mentions:

1. Christmas Vacation

2. Elf

3. Scrooged

4. Trading Places

5. The Nightmare Before Christmas

* Animated shorts were left off

Love to see the mentions of Emmitt Otters Jugband Christmas even if I consider it a special not a movie. All the good ones have been mentioned. No need to throw up a list.

I am sorry Trading Places (which is one of my all time favorite movies period) is not a Christmas movie.
