Top 5 no-skip albums - your personal list (1 Viewer)

Television - Marquee Moon
Led Zeppelin 1
Miles - Kind of Blue
Pink Floyd- Animals
Metallica - Master of Puppets

I mean I could name countless albums but those are the first that came to mind

Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Led Zeppelin - IV
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Alarm - Strength
Ac/Dc - Back in Black

So many possible other choices, but these are old cassettes, CDs and vinyl that I have never skipped a song. Abbey Road is a great album, but sometimes I skip Come Together or Octopus' Garden. DSOTM is great, but sometimes I skip Money. I don't skip anything on Master of Puppets or Justice for All. This really is an impossible task, so I'm just going to leave it at the 5 I put up there and call it a night.

Clutch - "Blast Tyrant"
Joe Walsh/Barnstorm - "Barnstorm"
Porcupine Tree - "In Absentia"
Masters of Reality - "Blue Garden"
King's X - "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska"

i dropped my cd collection on a beach and they got all scratched up so none of them are no skip at this point take that to the bank brohans

I restarted my vinyl collection about five years ago and committed to only buying albums that I will listen end to end. For the most part, I’ve stayed true to that commitment, with the collection now over 400. I’m still doing some research on my list, so in the meantime I will add my granddaughter’s favorites.

She is turning 2 this summer. We have “dance party” every Thursday and Friday when we look after her and she definitely knows what she likes. Without further ado, here is Baby Punk’s top no skip albums …

1. Beatles - Rubber Soul
2. CCR - Cosmo’s Factory
3. The James Cotton Band - 100% Cotton
4. Paul Simon - Graceland
5. Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

I’ll try to slip other albums on that I think she might like but she just shakes her head at me and say “NO” until I play one of these. This kid already has me wrapped around her finger … I better start putting money away for her car now.

I don’t think I ever skip a song on the first 4 Metallica albums. What a run.

It is a tough task.

No skip? I've alluded to it in at least one countdown, but for me it's Hot Fuss by the Killers. On account of tracks 1-5 (Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Mr Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done) are probably the strongest first five tracks of anything I've ever heard. From there, track 6 and 9 are also pretty solid as well, and once I'm half way through the album, I may as well play it out

Your granddaughter has better musical taste than 99% of the FFA.

Cool to see the Manson album on the list. Killer album and one of my favorites when working out. It is angry.

Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
The White Stripes - Elephant
T. Rex - Electric Warrior
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

Pet Sounds is garbage.

There, I said it. Go listen to it if you haven't heard it. It sucks. It's awful. Everybody says it's sooooo good. It's not.

I'll try it again tonight for the 19th time.

I put it on my personal list of no-skip albums. Not sure what about that would suggest the need to tell me “Go listen to it if you haven't heard it.”

I dunno, my personal list was objectively true. You could assign a truth value to it, and that truth value says "go listen to it."

I did order a Pet Sounds shirt the other day. (Not lying, I got a white t-shirt with the cover on it. Should ship the 7th of April. Why so long after I ordered? I don't really know, come to think of it.)

[shuke]I think you guys should duke it out.[/shuke]

It is indeed an album whose mythos sort of betrays that it can be a bit of a maudlin affair if you're looking at it uninfluenced by rock and pop culture history or coming in cold. The topics are not, as the Beach Boys once sang, fun fun fun.

But it is beautiful in its lead vocals and group harmonies, and that beauty is what makes it so appealing and possibly energizing and/or cathartic for the listener. The instrumentation and playing, done by a group of professional session musicians who were from around Southern California and were nicknamed the "Wrecking Crew," and the compositions (never written to sheets in proper notation; but rather, hummed and verbally presented by Brian Wilson to the aforementioned session musicians during long sessions of music creation) are all first rate.

With that in mind, I'll point out that the history and understanding of the album is changing. People are de-mythologizing the record and writing a more accurate history of Pet Sounds. Those musicians that played on the album and helped the compositions come to life (Glen Campbell, the guitarist; Carol Kaye, the electric bassist; Hal Blaine, the drummer; and Leon Russell, the pianist and keyboardist) are all starting to get more front-and-center credit as the wonderfully talented players and the contributing composers to and interpreters of Brian Wilson's vision.

Enjoy your 19th go round with it, GM. Just don't have nervous breakdown. (That's both a Brian Wilson joke and Rolling Stones reference all in one.)

God only knows what we’d be without you.

Challenge accepted. This album came out two years after my parents were born. I just drank 2/3 a bottle of wine and popped a gummy. Will report back.

Pretty short. I could see some folks skipping a few like the instrumentals. Just a bit more variety than I had expected.

Glad to check it out finally and continue to utterly confuse my Apple Music algo.

Song 2:

You Still Believe in Me

Sigh....guys, I'm trying really hard here. It's like a bad song from a boys prep school musical. This is bad. Objectively bad.

Song 4

That's Not Me

Fine. I'll give this song a 3/5 stars. No magic here but better than the last two.

There is no lyrical magic here. This isn't Bob Dylan.

Oh it's over? Meh.

Song 3

That's Not Me

I'm 15 seconds in, this isn't catchy. Meanders all over. Lyrics aren't profound. More off-key caterwhalling.

Liked it enough to name it twice?

I liked That's Not Me too. Kinda the more maudlin stuff I didn't expect like Rock mentioned.
