Another childhood favorite that gets passed by better sandwiches. I ate this regularly as a kid, crusts cut off. I still occasionally throw a slice of bologna onto a meat heavy sandwich.

Does this cover fried bologna or is that a potential other selection?

I made one once because I wanted a BLT and was pissed we had no bacon at the time. I did like it better than not fried. I used supermarket bologna though and it looks like thinly sliced bologna is ideal.

We all have our own lived experiences, and I appreciate you making this list.

Based on this, I'm proud of you for even including bologna in the list.
And for those crying about bologna over PB&J, they've clearly never had a proper bologna sandwich.

And thin sliced is fine, but the proper way is thick-sliced (at least 1/4") and burned all to hell.

WIth egg and cheese on a bun is the ideal choice, imo. Grilled onions and mustard is great too (the Martinsville racetrack method).

Great thread. So many good options but you just can't beat a really good banh mi. And it must come from a hole-in-the-wall kind of place.

My general rule with banh mi is that the cheaper the cost, the better the sandwich.

I learned in Memphis that it was nearly impossible to get regular egg salad - it was all egg-and-olive salad. I like olives so got used to it, but what a weird regional thing that was.

I will note, if any of you ever happen to be in or near Costa Mesa, CA, and want a good hole-in-the-wall sandwich, try Frank's Philly on Fairview, near Newport Blvd. While they specialize in (of course) Philly cheesesteaks, my go-to is their Italian Sausage sandwich. They get their sausage from a well-known local sausage importer, slice those suckers up and douse in delicious Marinara sauce (it's an Italian family-run joint) and Provolone cheese on a hoagie roll brought in straight from Philly. You can opt for peppers & onions but I forgo those bad boys. Been eating this sandwich since like 1991. So good.

I was pleased with the placement of cheddar! I might be a little bit of a cheese snob, but regardless of that a good sharp cheddar would probably contend for my #1.

I think the quality of ingredients and correct proportions make more of a difference than the type of sandwich it is.

Like a Fairleigh Dickinson or Florida Gulf Coast, the most humble, second 50 sandwich can take down the provisional #1 if it's made with good bread and fillings by someone who knows what they're doing.

Pork belly bahn mi is my #1 and it’s not even close. Perfect sandwich and almost always reasonably priced. The only question is whether I can handle two. Usually end up wanting 1.5 of them.

Yeah, technically. But if you're invited to dinner and I say we're gonna have pasta, and you show up and the meal is pasta salad, your reaction should appropriately be "uh, wtf?"

I have a feeling your take here may be the more popular opinion but it really makes no sense to me. How is it we can grill a piece of chicken, turkey or pig and put it between two pieces of bread and it’s a sandwich but if I do the same to a cow it’s not?

Because it already has its own specific name.

Ground meat made into a patty on a bun is a burger.

How is that any different than a Po Boy, Monte Cristo or Banh Mi?

ETA two things - 1. I’m not disputing it’s a burger - what I’m saying is burgers are sandwiches. 2. I don’t give a **** if he excludes them or not - he even admits technically it’s a sandwich which is again my only point

Those are types of sandwiches regardless of interior ingredients.

A “burger” indicates a ground meat patty as the main interior ingredient.
