TOP GUN (1 Viewer)

7/10

It's a Bruckheimer/Simpson production all right. It felt like Michael Bay directed a Top Gun script written by schmaltzy Steven Spielberg.

9/10 and I’m a tough grader.  Saw it on IMAX which was a great choice.  Loved the storyline and the connections to the original.  Made me feel old though.

Took my kids 10 and 9 to it today with prerequisite that they watch Top Gun first. When we left they both stated how they liked the Rooster story line. Their little minds were also blown away how far picture quality has come along since I was their age. Great movie...I can't think of a sequel that maybe better than the original.

I rewatched the original 1986 Top Gun last night for the fun of it on Netflix (goes away 5/31, fyi).   It still holds up really well to this day.  Some misc. observations..

- Why did Goose have a Polaroid camera in the fighter jet to take a pic of them giving the bird to the MIG?

- Playing volleyball in jeans mid-summer?

- And why did these guys wrap their hands in tape like a boxer to play pickup volleyball?

- And then putting on the wool collared leather bomber jacket AFTER just completing a heated volleyball game mid-summer?

- Next time I go to a chick's house for a first date, I'm gonna ask to take a shower at her place 2 mins after arriving. (and then put my sweaty clothes back on after cuz it's all I have).  Boss move.

- The Navy must not believe in Air Conditioning, cuz damn these guys were sweating bullets constantly.
Commie

And considering the mission parameters they may as well have had Maverick say "I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-14 back on Tatooine and they're not much bigger than two meters."

I mean, negotiate a canyon...take out an exhaust port...c'mon!

Thought the same thing as well. I was a little skeptical after the first 30 or so but it definitely pulled me in.

Agree with others that Jennifer Connelly looked amazing. Made me want to go back to watch her first starring role in the awful movie "Career Opportunities". She looks amazing in that in a whole different way.....

PSA-

Someone posted earlier that he had to pee but was afraid he'd miss great action.

Whenever Jennifer Connelly enters a scene, it's safe to make the run.

Man, I want to see this ASAP, and want to make sure I don't miss out on the IMAX experience.  But I'm tied up this Friday (poker night) and the next couple of weekends are crazy for us.  I think I may aim for June 10th.  I assume it'll still be in IMAX format here locally.  👍

I am still amazed that movies don't have a 10 minute intermission.  People wanna pee and be comfortable while chugging their 80 ounce drinks, plus the theaters would make a lot more money selling more food/drinks during that intermission.

Silly

End rant

I go to classy theaters where you can order food from a panel on the armrest.

And then I pee in my seat.

hb right? the one off beach and the 405 is epic but not an imax

Correct, and I was hoping that theater had an IMAX screen but the closest is down at the Irvine Spectrum.

But hey if you say that one has an epic screen I think I may just opt for that.  10 minute drive is better for me.

seems wrong that the enemy was firing radar-guided SAMs at them and they were punching out flares instead of chaff to evade them.

Just got back.

100% worth the price of admission for the flight stuff alone.   It looked absolutely amazing.   Also nails what good sequels have to do - give nods to the OG while improving the arc, tension, and f/x.     One of the biggest knocks on the original is the "missions" are meh and the first is similar to the last.   Great decision making this a clear cut mission and ramping up the stakes.   Oh - and John Hamm

That said, I was expecting some cheese and callbacks, but IMO it leaned a bit too hard on it.  Ie-  bar scene with Rooster intercut with too many scenes from the '86 movie.   Also, if I am understanding @Andy Dufresne correctly I agree - I think the last 15-20 mins was a bit much (except the actual aerial footage), and dropped the rating a point for me.   Can't get more specific on what I am talking about or how I think it would have been better.    I can PM if anybody cares.

Long story short the +s way outweigh the -s, and it's still at least an 8/10 for me.

Yeah, looked up local IMAXes and found that one.  I may just bail from work at noon next Friday (we get off at 1 on summer Fridays) and go see it.  Unless it's just evening shows.  Gotta look.

I will always remember that white tank top.

the answer to almost every one of the questions is “ 🤷‍♂️ it was the 80s”

Saw it. Liked it didn't love it. The nondescript bg bothered me more than it should. IDC what anyone says still love Connelly

Loved it.  Whole family loved it.  The song at the end was stupid.  Gotta do better than that.

It was missing the light hearted comedy of Goose.

That Dogfight Football game I was so confused WTF was going on when that started up.  He says you play offense and defense at the same time?    How the hell do you know which guys are on your team....they are all shirtless and in denim shorts/jeans.   And wouldn't you just have one guy on your team go deep and the rest of your team play Defense?  You'd score every single time.

Saw it last night and enjoyed it!  Was I blown away by it though...no.    The plane scenes are amazing, good fun overall.   The original 1986 Top Gun is probably the single greatest quotable movie of all time.   Almost every single scene has a memorable line.  This one only had a couple after first view..."we're having a good moment, let's not ruin it" and "you told me not to think!" are the 2 that stand out.

And Jennifer Connelly isn't bad looking but her couple scenes of her walking to the door....she has the body of a 10 yr old girl.

And thank god at the end when he went back to the bar to find Penny, she wasn't hiding and played "you've lost that loving feeling" on the jukebox.   I was waiting for it and I'm glad they didn't cave.  Would've been cheese city.

And that one move by the enemy plane to avoid the missile....WTF was that?  Can they really do stuff like that?   Almost like he shut the engines down and let the air resistance put him into a slow motion side spin.  That was pretty crazy.

@flapgreen thank you for not replying to this.  It was obvious right away who Rooster was but I'm glad I didn't know going in.  :salute:
I thought they did a good job of tying that in without being overly sappy, except for maybe the piano part. Could've left that part out.
