Tush Push - Do the rules apply for this play or not? Doesn't seem like it (5 Viewers)

The play has been legal in the NFL since 2005 when the league removed the language in the rule book that prohibited pushing offensive players.

Maybe people subconsciously don't like it cause the phrase tush push isn't masculine enough. Maybe if it was called something like the a$$ blast they'd get on board. "Eagles punch it through the end zone with another a$$ blast for the win!"

I don't care what they call it, as long as the ref signals first down or TD when bodies are getting up off the turf.
And the fact they're now attaching a name to it with a Phillly connotation tells you its viewed as an Eagles play - one they're very successful at, so sure let's ban it.

Funny this play has been legal since 2005 but just these past 2 years are the complaints about it. I wonder what happened in the last 2 years.

Yup, players have been pushing the ball carrier for 19 seasons now - over the line to gain, over the goal line....but something about the last 2 years are just unacceptable.
If you can't stop it, ban it. And trust me, if they could stop the Eagles, they wouldn't be worried about banning it.

I think you’re talking to the wrong guy. The Fanny Pack has been successful for the Eagles, but it’s not like a difference-maker (not anywhere close).
There was a reason it was illegal for so long. You can make cases both ways, but all the attention it’s getting is now subtracting from the game. It’s time to put it on the shelf so it’s not a thing. Tomorrow won’t be soon enough. It’s the worst “hot” NFL topic I can ever remember, lol.
It’ll get the ax next season & we can go back to actual NFL news. Rules get changed all the time…just have to adapt & overcome. I didn’t like it as a Cowboys fan when the NFL started FA in the early 90s. We were the deepest team in the league by far, but it was best for the league.
My advice is to enjoy the Fanny Pack this year as long as it keeps working, then try to come up with something else. The NFL is an ever-changing organism.

I agree with everything here. The reason they now allow pushing the ball carrier is because the refs couldn't call it consistently. In a scrum, it was too difficult to determine if players were pushing the runner, so they allowed pushing. But the move now seems to be to ban the pushing of the QB but allow it elsewhere on the field, and that's where I have a big problem.
Go back to 2004, but don't complain when your* team is flagged for pushing the WR over the goal line.

I think all the rule needs is some clarification.
Can you "push" the ball carrier in the back?

Or are both legal?
Or is neither legal in the truist sense of how the rule reads?
Is there a lawyer here on the board who could look into this to see what the rule implies?
Or is implication a mute point?

A thought that just popped into my head that I had to write down. Haha.
They do not allow a player to jump on another player in any way to try and block a field goal so i don't know why this push from multiple players forward is allowed. Just seems like an odd play and and unfair advantage for the offense.

So it's hard to find actual metrics on conversion rate this year, but if we go by the metric that Redzone generally shows every short yardage play then the rest of the league appears to be converting right around 50-60% on tush pushes this year that we've been able to see on TV, which is below the league average on traditional short yardage plays. That gives some good insight on solving the great mystery of why every team isn't using it every time when it's allegedly an automatic 1st down.
That's not even accounting for the notion that at least two of the conversions on it (Pats a couple weeks ago and Broncos today) came on plays where the QB had already picked up the 1st down before the "pusher" even got to him, so in reality it was more of a traditional QB sneak.
