Tush Push - Do the rules apply for this play or not? Doesn't seem like it (1 Viewer)

Pat McAfee just told you all to shut your yaps and get over it.
Well, that counts as "analysis" on ESPN nowadays.

And when the league does eventually ban the play
At least we all agree there.

As it stands, I'm not sure those two guys behind Hurts are actually doing a helluva lot to move that pile.
Um, no. That's exactly why those players are there and a huge reason the (soon to be illegal and sometimes currently illegal) play is so successful.
As I said previously, I don't know about other teams running this play BUT I've seen every single one of the Eagles running it. Jalen gets the first down/TD on his own often. Other teams do it and even with the guys behind, they often fail. Jalen is the reason the play is so successful for the Eagles. He can squat two interior linemen.
prob true but then shouldn't be a big deal if no longer allowed

13 pages about this and counting?

I mean clever rhyme and funny euphamism but what?

Super boring play that is situationally effective for most teams as long as I can remember now being questioned as unfair?

Im shuked.
I guess you have a short memory then, because it hasn’t been around forever. Nor has it even been legal forever.
Say again?

How is this any different than a QB sneak besides a different name?
The play has been legal in the NFL since 2005 when the league removed the language in the rule book that prohibited pushing offensive players.

Yup. Which has been covered repeatedly in this thread.

Yeah I regret ever coming into the thread.

I just wondered why it kept being bumped is all.

Excuuuse me for not being up to speed on this terrible conversation.

Not a big deal either way IMO. But seeing as how this is on page 14 I guess it’s a big deal for some.

Maybe people subconsciously don't like it cause the phrase tush push isn't masculine enough. Maybe if it was called something like the a$$ blast they'd get on board. "Eagles punch it through the end zone with another a$$ blast for the win!"

I don't care what they call it, as long as the ref signals first down or TD when bodies are getting up off the turf.

And the fact they're now attaching a name to it with a Phillly connotation tells you its viewed as an Eagles play - one they're very successful at, so sure let's ban it.

The play was illegal less than 20 years ago & it’ll no doubt be changed back to where there’s no pushing allowed next season.
Prior to 2005, it was a penalty to push or aid the ball carrier, not the QB, but any ball carrier. To be clear, this is what you think they should go back to - no pushing of any ball carrier anywhere on the field?
Funny this play has been legal since 2005 but just these past 2 years are the complaints about it. I wonder what happened in the last 2 years.

This thread was started on the day of a certain team's NFC Title Game this past year.....

Yup, players have been pushing the ball carrier for 19 seasons now - over the line to gain, over the goal line....but something about the last 2 years are just unacceptable.

If you can't stop it, ban it. And trust me, if they could stop the Eagles, they wouldn't be worried about banning it.

Philly Special
Brotherly Shove

Keep adding to the lore.

I think you’re talking to the wrong guy. The Fanny Pack has been successful for the Eagles, but it’s not like a difference-maker (not anywhere close).

There was a reason it was illegal for so long. You can make cases both ways, but all the attention it’s getting is now subtracting from the game. It’s time to put it on the shelf so it’s not a thing. Tomorrow won’t be soon enough. It’s the worst “hot” NFL topic I can ever remember, lol.

It’ll get the ax next season & we can go back to actual NFL news. Rules get changed all the time…just have to adapt & overcome. I didn’t like it as a Cowboys fan when the NFL started FA in the early 90s. We were the deepest team in the league by far, but it was best for the league.

My advice is to enjoy the Fanny Pack this year as long as it keeps working, then try to come up with something else. The NFL is an ever-changing organism.

I agree with everything here. The reason they now allow pushing the ball carrier is because the refs couldn't call it consistently. In a scrum, it was too difficult to determine if players were pushing the runner, so they allowed pushing. But the move now seems to be to ban the pushing of the QB but allow it elsewhere on the field, and that's where I have a big problem.

Go back to 2004, but don't complain when your* team is flagged for pushing the WR over the goal line.

*not you specifically

@trader jake can you please post the full quote of the Eagles player who "admits what they're doing is illegal"? TIA
“I was yanking him for sure,” Goedert said. “They say you can’t pull, but I was behind him.”

That’s all I’ve seen
Me too, which is the equivalent of a O lineman admitting he may have been holding on a play or two that wasn't flagged. But I'm going to give @trader jake the benefit of the doubt that he's not using a misleading thread title.

I think all the rule needs is some clarification.
Can you "push" the ball carrier in the back?
Or can you "push" the ball carrier in the "tush"?
Or are both legal?
Or is neither legal in the truist sense of how the rule reads?
Is there a lawyer here on the board who could look into this to see what the rule implies?
Or is implication a mute point?
Or is implication even a word?
I hope this brings some clarity to this thread.
I'm just glad Travis Kelce and his new girlfriend knocked this item from the news cycle for even a little bit.
Or did it?
Has this thread "jumped the shark" yet?
Anyway I am rambling, like this thread.
Peace
Out

Recently, five-time All-Pro and former Houston Texans standout J.J. Watt defended the play, surmising that even without the extra push, the Eagles would be "just as successful" due to their dominant offensive line. Meanwhile, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes echoed Watt, praising how the unit has "mastered" the play.

"It's an advantage for them but you see other teams try to do it and they can't do it as well as they do," Mahomes said, via the Chiefs. "It speaks to their offensive line, it speaks to their quarterback."

Pffft. What do those guys know?

4th and a long 1 in overtime.

No problem, run the play. 🙄
watch it again, the pushers didn't even get their hands on Hurts until he was over the line to gain. Without the pushes Eagles would still be super successful on sneaks

This would be like Shaquille O'Neal using his hand and shoulders to give Kobe even more elevation on his dunks. And it would not be allowed.
Wat???
A thought that just popped into my head that I had to write down. Haha.

They do not allow a player to jump on another player in any way to try and block a field goal so i don't know why this push from multiple players forward is allowed. Just seems like an odd play and and unfair advantage for the offense.

They're entirely different plays. Completely unrelated.

So it's hard to find actual metrics on conversion rate this year, but if we go by the metric that Redzone generally shows every short yardage play then the rest of the league appears to be converting right around 50-60% on tush pushes this year that we've been able to see on TV, which is below the league average on traditional short yardage plays. That gives some good insight on solving the great mystery of why every team isn't using it every time when it's allegedly an automatic 1st down.

That's not even accounting for the notion that at least two of the conversions on it (Pats a couple weeks ago and Broncos today) came on plays where the QB had already picked up the 1st down before the "pusher" even got to him, so in reality it was more of a traditional QB sneak.
