I've also always thought that there shouldn't be offsides inside the 18 yard box. IMO, if you drop a dime to someone right on the goal line and they put it in, you should always be rewarded
Do you mean no offside on a ball initially played inside the 18 or received inside the 18?

Played. I don't want someone camping in front of the keeper when the ball is at midfield.

But if you've already made it into the 18, I don't think offside trapping you should be an option anymore

I agree entirely. It would be an easy rule to implement too.

I don't think the % of total offside would be effected a great deal but it makes too much sense not to do.

Although from what little reading I have done, this does not appear to be part of the new change.

ok I found some more details on the testing. I am unsure what they mean "across Italy and Netherlands" but if that includes the top divisions, this is going to be a big test. I assume it is this year?

==============================

FIFA will first trial this new rule in Sweden, with the nation’s men’s Under-21 and women’s Under-19 leagues the chosen test subjects.

The new law will then be put into action in stages across Italy and the Netherlands, with FIFA’s rule change board to assess its’ impact.

This is my preference. "Daylight" will completely turn the game on it's head. You're talking about moving the onside line by like 5 feet for a player at full speed.
I would not worry too much about it. Given the speed at which FIFA moves we probably won't see the changes (what ever they end up being) for a long while.

Wegner's original goal was to have them all in place by WC2022, and they still have not even started to test yet.

The rule needs 2 changes, IMO.

1. It's based on feet on the ground. Nothing else. I don't care how you're leaning, where a finger is, drawing a line on a shoulder. Feet on the ground, use VAR.

2. No offsides inside the 18.
No reason to make it more difficult. For an AR, you see space between them with no overlap, it's off sides. It will improve the AR's at the youth level so fast, and the whole game will be better. So easy for the average Joe to understand. As for feet on the ground, that's the HARDEST thing to judge. I would almost say ignore feet on the ground with the new rule.

for people having a hard time picturing the new rule change (which has been championed by Wegner for quite a few years), look at this picture

I don't think this lowers the use of VAR IMO, we will still have it in use a lot but I think it does, finally, give an advantage to offense in a sport that has always favored the defense
My favorite part is that with more scoring, ref PK calls become less important as the value of a goal is reduced.

Feet on the ground only works at the highest levels of the game IMO.

The amount of mistakes that will made at levels that don't have professionals AR's and don't have VAR would be enormous. It makes the call so much harder to make because of the congestion at the feet.

This is perfect.

There will still be VAR at the highest levels of the game because of the stakes but at all other levels, the ability of the AR's to make the correct call is going to sky rocket. And while it will give some MUCH needed advantages to attackers, the sport is SO heavily leaned towards the defense, I don't expect it will make too much of a difference. I could see total goals go up by .5 to 1 a game (after defenders and tactics adjust to it), but that would be very welcomed.

There is a possible negative here in that it may cause weaker teams to bunker even harder to make sure they are always behind the ball. But I guess that happens already as is.

@NewlyRetired this change would make off sides super easy to spot. Especially for youth. I don't understand why you would think otherwise. You see daylight, they guy is probably off sides. The calls in youth have been so bad that something really needs to change.

I have been around the sport in the country for way too many decades to get ahead of myself but even saying that I can't shake the sense that a perfect storm could be forming with Messi, the Copa, and the WC all building on each other.

Did you tag the wrong person? I was agreeing with you entirely. Here is what I wrote for regarding the new rule and the feet on the ground idea.

New rule: "the ability of the AR's to make the correct call is going to sky rocket."

Feet on ground: "The amount of mistakes that will made at levels that don't have professionals AR's and don't have VAR would be enormous. It makes the call so much harder to make because of the congestion at the feet."

I can only speak to my state but ar are not used in most towns until college. I reffed high school soccer for about 12 years. A single referee used until Jv level then 2 refs for jv and varsity.

Who would have thought that when Juventus plays AC Milan, we'd be watching McKennie/Weah vs Pulisic/Musah?
That would be so cool :)

I think the likelihood of Weston staying at Juve is low, although if rumors are true, I think Juve have set too high a price for Weston. You can read more here

He’s their only good MF player. They need to sell players though

Sky Sport Italia have reported that Milan are getting closer to reaching an official agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Christian Pulisic. Chelsea value the player at around €25m, despite his having only a year left on his current contract. Milan have put in an improved offer of €22m including additional bonuses on Wednesday, which is significantly closer to Chelsea’s original asking price. Sky believe that the breakdown of Milan’s latest offer includes a guaranteed €20m for Chelsea, including €2m in add-ons. According to Sky’s reports, Milan are now awaiting the final and definitive green light from the decision makers at Chelsea.

Our schools use AR's sometimes, two man systems others. EVERYONE else including youth, club, rec, and Revs always all use AR's here.

Christian #Pulisic to #ACMilan from #Chelsea is at the final stage for €23M (bonuses included). Contract until 2027 (€4M/year). #Milan are planning medicals and signing before Monday. #transfers #CFC

For Pulisic practically nothing is missing, the agreement is there, between today and tomorrow the transfer is completed with all the documentation. Final figure around €22M. Milan absolutely wanted to complete it within the week and they will succeed.

One step away from official now. Just need to pass the medical!

Christian Pulisic to AC Milan, here we go! Deal in place between clubs as Chelsea accepted conditions of final bid. Personal terms agreed weeks ago as the player only wanted Milan — pushing for this new chapter.Medical/travel being scheduled.
My dream here we got has arrived (ok my biggest was always Messi to Milan but CP was always a close second)

Per Romano

Excellent relationship between Chelsea and AC Milan was crucial to get Pulisic deal done today. 🔴⚫🇺🇸

Player was pushing since Monday to join Milan, not considering any other club or destination.

Deal worth more €20m with add-ons.

After Loftus-Cheek, Pulisic also done.

€4M/yr is less than half his current contract (just over €9M/yr the past 4.5 years). Sometimes salaries are reported differently in different countries, so I guess its unclear, but we knew he'd have to take a pay cut wherever he ended up. Regardless, it seems like he really wanted this Milan move so I'm happy for him and it seems like a win-win-win for both clubs and the player.

He’ll make more off endorsements if he does well there and the upcoming copa and we.

Italy has always reported strangely. I think it has to do with before and after tax.

That being said I am sure he took a massive pay cut.

That's what I was thinking as well. If the quoted number is net of taxes, he's done pretty well here. I mean, its fantastic for him to go to a club like Milan in any case, but that's not too much of a drop in salary if its a net number.

$4mil/yr to play soccer.... in Italy. I could handle that.
Buy one of those fixer upper deals for 1 euro and live the high life.
Pulisic seems like the least "flashy" guy ever in terms of spending money. Also, he has no kids, no wife, no partner that we know of. I think he has a nice car and that is about it.

I would bet he has saved a ton of his huge wages to date and can now smartly pick and choose where to play with out worrying about getting top dollar salary any more.

Is MLS beneath Dest at this point? He seems to play so much better for us, I wonder if a few years over here would help him get back on track

I would hope he has one more try in Europe. There has to be mid level teams in the big leagues he could help. He does appear to play much better for the US than at club for what ever reason.

He's got two years left on a pretty nice contract. He's in a very difficult situation but Barca is right there with him so hopefully they can work something out.
