US Men's National Team (5 Viewers)

While GGG's wording in the press conference was a little unclear, there is a lot of speculation that Gio is going to start today (probably go 45 minutes).

If he does start in the midfield, I would guess at a line up like this... (I could make agreement that this may be one of the highest skilled lineups the US has ever fielded...just from a technical aspect only)

......................................................

.................................Turner

...Dest............Richards.........Ream..............Scally

.....................Weston.............Musah

...................................Gio

Weah......................Balogun....................Pulisic
This, with Adams in place of Musah and Jedi in place of Scally is pretty much the lineup all of us were hoping for last fall.

This has beat down written all over it.

Agreed. And with the way Musah is playing now, it is going to be hard to keep him out of any starting lineup even if/when Adams returns.

Here is the starting line up (I don't yet know how they will line up)

late correction from USMNT. Richards starts in place of Miles.

I don't get the feeling Miles got hurt in warm ups, it sounds like just a mistake from the original announcement

isn't Scally primarily a RB? I'd think he'd put Dest on the left

game is on TNT/Peacock
Scally has played a lot on the left but I don’t know how they will line up tonight
This is Scally's second ever start and 4th appearance under Berhalter. He's played left back in 2 of his previous 3 caps under Berhalter including his only start. His only appearance at right back was when he subbed in for Yedlin vs Saudi Arabia.

His 3 caps this year - under other coaches - all came at right back. I bet he plays on the left.

Bad News: Noel Buck got into the game for England's U19 team in an official UEFA event, which preliminary cap-ties him to England

Good News: Rumors are swirling that 2004 Winger Luca Koleosho has submitted his one-time switch to the US
I would take this trade in a second! That would be a wonderful get.

And the one time switch locks him into the US forever I think even if he is under 21, coupled with Buck unlikely to crack a full England lineup could see him switch back in a few years.
The Buck thing doesn't make much sense to me. He's on the verge of our senior team but he's not even a starter for England's U19s. This is bad agent advice IMO.

He felt neglected by USSF and I get that. But why play in this event? Now his options are severely limited and he's miles away from their senior team. I'd guess he'll switch in time but for a kid that wants a big move, having a few US caps can help facilitate that.

I'm pretty sure Scally will play on the left. And I think that works if we're sticking Gio at the ten. Pulisic tends to have to move inside a lot when playing with Jedi because of all the overlaps. Scally tends to just play support on the left. Which can leave CP wide and give Gio those pockets in between the lines. And Dest and Weah have obviously played with each other on the right a lot. So I'd be very surprised to see Dest on the left.

Scally just stopped on the play. Guess he thought turner would get it
He had made a great play earlier to cut out an attack, surprised me with his speed. He's young but too old to ball-watch like that.

Plus, the Germans are exposing Dest badly, especially when they got the equalizer. Maybe he and McKennie switch positions against top-notch teams.

TBH... germany coulda shoulda had a few that first half. US looked ok- especially breaking (I thought CP earned the PK on the GK... based on phone viewage). but Germany were carving them up in front of the box.

Do we always take at least two touches or dribble every ball? Serious question. I haven't been watching this group much.

Aaronson played his way back into the fold today. looked positive and good.

Pepi did some nice work defesnviely... but the beat goes on that the forwards are finding no love from their teammates on the pass.

that was our A team... and I can't recall the MF getting so over run like that- at least since Netherlands in the WC. defensive line was under pressure as a result all game.

it would be interesting to see how the press worked so well. the US isn't usually so shaky- but I think it's all rooted in the MF. high press and solid defensive shape through the MF for the germans leaving no options for the US.

Huge fail. Richards was beyond awful. Lalas would have been a better backstop.

no. I didn't notice it out of the ordinary today.
Just watching the replays now. Even on CP's goal, it was a very low percentage play. I expected so much more I guess.
their best plays were off the dribble.

Germany's shape was dominant- the quick pass wasn't on as much with the way they were pressing and also covering the field behind them.

Germany had so many points in the game where they had nine guys around the box. The thing to notice is the Germans body language and positioning off the ball when they have possession. They know that none of their players is going to have a bad give away, or try and force something that is not there. They never have to back off. They play very relaxed/patient yet creative. Dis·ci·pline, we have none.

I think we need to find a coach that can bring that style of play to our entire system at some point. Sadly, I doubt it ever happens. To much $$ to be made as is.

I agree with the overall sentiment... the US is at it's best playing the ball quickly and finding the space. it's always opened up the extra bit off the dribble- but today they needed it just to progess the ball.

The US was overrun by a very good and yes, disciplined team. that's where we are, coach or no. and that's always been germany. I mean- GGG caught flack because he wants them to play it like you're describing, but which gets them into trouble sometime against a well organized press.

and tbf, the germans had a number of surprising giveawyas in the 1st half leading to dangerous US breaks.

I'd need to look closer at the MF- but the breakdown was there... either tactically with numbers mismatch or something else. it felt like the germans always had an open man in the MF, and they always found him.
