US Men's National Team (7 Viewers)

And I still want somebody/any body to get stuck in.

The lack of heart/will is genuinely disturbing. You're getting outplayed, outclassed, outhustled... At least try to do something in your power- fly in and take a yellow
This... Even in a friendly, was the most disturbing trend I've seen from this team.

Ok- you want to play it out of the back with guys who can't trap or pass the ball consistently at the pace of international game, I guess whatever. But at least attack it with grit and determination and heart... Especially on defense. Anybody can do that- should be a bare minimum starting point to be in this or any team.
They really miss Adams in this regard.
And swag.

Musah has been disappointing in this regard..he strikes me as a genuinely nice kid and could use a bit of chop on the shoulder stick. He's also been so inconsistent in his own game as he's gotten older (and hes still young)- too many clunkers like yesterday.

That was my thought. If I was him I might just stay in Europe given the lack of heart this team shows.

Embarrassing.

I am not as worried about the lame duck game.

However, if we see that same lack of energy with the players knowing Poch is in the stands I will become extremely concerned about the DNA of the team.

If you can't get a pep in your step with a brand new coach watching, I have no idea what would motivate the players.

A bad coach throwing his players under the bus or a guy who tells it like it is?

USMNT interim coach Mikey Varas didn’t mince his words in the press conference
“The mentality is on the players. Sorry, they know it.”
“That mentality to fight and to run and to sacrifice, I can’t do that for them. I can’t do that for them. That’s on them.”
“The trainings were intense, they were aggressive. But when the game comes, you’ve got to get going.”

“The players are the ones who bring that. Coaches can only get you so far on the mentality perspective.”

“They’ve got to search deep inside. That’s something I challenge them with.”

ESPN is reporting that the US Soccer Board of Governors is meeting tonight (very soon) to approve Poch as the coach. This will be the last step before the announcement (tomorrow?)

I lean more towards a coach who shares responsibility with the players for how they perform on the field.

But this is clearly a different situation. This is an interim coach in every sense of the word. He has no ties to the players nor do they to him.

I certainly wish to have seen more professionalism from the players from an effort point of view but I can't say it shocked me at all.

If they had shown any heart, grit or determination in the Copa, this game wouldn't have bothered me as much.

Interesting tidbit (tho no surprise) re: Turner mixed into some LFC news on Kelleher...

James Pearce@JamesPearceLFC

The bid Liverpool rejected for Kelleher from Forest towards the end of the window was just £7m plus Matt Turner, who #LFC had zero interest in.
That was £8m less than they offered in January. No chance he was going anywhere for that amount.

LFC doesn't even see him as a quality backup.

I think Turners next step is likely just to hang on until his contract runs out, getting very little playing time and come back to MLS for one more contract.

That was impressive... for both teams. The defensive team's press was incredible. Perfectly spaced, each guy did his job. The passing out of a press like that.... pretty sure our USMNT couldn't do that. That's a level of youth soccer we haven't played or coached in the past. Really cool to see.
That said, there was a pass across the entire box that should never ever be made with that kind of defensive press.

But yeah... Very nice stuff.

I see him moving in the next window. For a cup of soup and 2 bits.

I might be on an island here, but I'm finding myself much less enthusiastic about qualifying, sine you know, we've already qualified. When we actually had to qualify I was on the edge of my seat every match...that won't be the case this go round.

Kind of a bummer and not something I expected from myself.

You probably already know this but I was a little confused by your wording. Just to be clear, there are no qualifying games at all this cycle for the US. The best we can hope for is for a friendly with another team that has an open date during a qualifying window.

And yes, I very much agree with you watching qualifying every cycle was wonderful entertainment and more nerve wracking than it should be.

I wonder how much of an advantage it will be from a prep standpoint...we don't have to go down to central america and play on god-awful surfaces, and can concentrate on sides that profile similar to our group.

The problem will be finding quality teams during the few International windows that aren't already playing meaningful games for qualifying themselves.

Qatar put themselves into other regions with good success. The US playing Panama, Mexico and Canada in friendlies isn't really the same.

Pretty sure it's a big disadvantage. No truly meaningful games from the end of Copa America to the beginning of the World Cup.

I am leaning towards big disadvantage as well.

And we can't really do anything in the next 15 months to schedule teams that will be similar to our group because we won't know the group until very late in 2025 (or when ever the draw occurs)

Meanwhile, Jesse was a really perfect hire by Canada. Perfectly fits that group of players and how they've already been built to play

USMNT Only

@usmntonly

Juventus scouts were in attendance for the USMNT’s match against Canada at the weekend, reportedly scouting 21-year-old striker Ricardo Pepi and 22-year-old attacking midfielder Malik Tillman, teammates at PSV
Hmm... Neither strike me as Serie A players, tbh. But both young enough to pick up some good skills there if they head over and actually get PT. I don't see that happening at Juve, tbh... But who knows

Pepi needs a new situation, as De Jong being a club legend that is showing no signs of slowing down is going to be really hard to unseat.

I would love to see Tillman move up to a stronger league in the next summer window but to more of a mid tier team in said league. He is unlikely to see much time on a team of Juventus's quality.

Sounds like there is a ton of turmoil going on in Chelsea. I don't know if that has anything to do with the Poch signing taking so long or not.

This may be an interesting name to track in the future. Sciaretta highlighted him in a Soccer America article.

Santiago Castaneda was born and raised in Tampa. In late High School he signed with the Tampa Bay Rowdies but only played one game for the main club before rolling the dice and moving to Germany where he signed with 3rd division team Duisberg.

He played a healthy 32 games for them in his first season and was signed this summer by Paderborn, who play in Bundesliga 2.

I believe he has started every game for Paderborn so far, who have yet to lose on the year and sit in a tie for 3rd with 2 wins and 2 draws.

Santiago plays midfield for them.

I do not believe Santiago has ever been called up to any US team to date. He is only 19 right now and is a dual nat (Colombia). His dad was a pro soccer player in Colombia.

The whole situation with Mikey is odd to me. During the game the announcers said Mikey was trying to put his stamp on the game and have them play how he wants them too, his system.

My thought was why? You are an interim coach who is not trying to stay on (possibly the new coach of MLS San Diego, Poch being finalized), this is a meaningless window of friendlies, you don't have much time to get buy in on a system, and half the top players are missing.

And now these comments? What is going on? I wonder if there is something behind the scenes we are not seeing.

Interesting about the donors....

@SoccerInsider

Major donors helped bolster Pochettino's salary. All the parts of the deal were not finalized until a few hours ago.Poch will debut in the October intl window: vs Panama in Austin and at Mexico in Guadalajara

That's not a call the referee's assistant can make IMO. A ticky tack foul call in the middle of the field? Get out of here.
