US Men's National Team (8 Viewers)

Who's our LCB?  Noticed him a few times and then the sequence leading to the goal was really outstanding.

And is Akinola really good, or just bigger, stronger and faster than the other kids?  He stood out, but a lot of it was his physicality.

And the good guys win.  Ghana was abusing the right side all night, but Sands held up in the end.  For all Akinola's physical gifts, he has the touch of Zardes.  He had 3 or 4 more good opportunities (between open shots and bad touches that stopped his runs) that say someone like CP finishes.

The US was overrun for about the first 10-15 minutes of the second half before they settled down and made the match even again.

Pretty even match all around.  Best players for the US were Sands, Durkin, and, Carleton though no one was really fantastic nor really bad.

LCB is Sands who has already broken through at NYCFC (why Ghana choose to pick on his side, I don't know since he's the best defender by far).

Akinola is all athlete and no skill (besides for that goal)....and that goal is why teams will continue to give him chances.

Ahh... he really stood out for me.  I started watching him on D instead of the ball and I can't explain what I liked beyond he just moved like he knows what he's doing and was very calm.

Are they not playing at Ato Boldon? Isn't that outside PaS? Where are you reading about these conditions? (not that I doubt them, just curious to follow).

Thx
In order:

1. Yes

2. I am not an expert on Trinidadian geography.

3.  It’s all over soccerTwitter.  You can check Grant Wahl’s timeline for a sample.

I think ideally he's a 6, but he reads the game really well and knows how to position himself quite well to deny shooting angles and passing lanes.  He also distributes quite well and never really looks like he's in distress (just very calm looking in general).

Am I the only one uncomfortable with bagging on a tiny poor(ish) ocean island about standing water?  Unless they put it there on purpose, which doesn't seem to be the case, they're probably doing the best they can.  Some of the Twitter stuff walks and quacks like an Ugly American.

Also, since this seems to be where we're hanging out at the moment...

A lot of the "worst miss of a wide open goal ever" clips are guys hitting a bouncing ball or, like Wondo, from players who have to worry the GK might intervene and get too precise instead of just touching it on goal.

But this one... oh my.

I don't read the twitters so I can only imagine. But for me it's just about how it affects the US. Not a reflection of T and T

Pulisic showed no discomfort 2day @ practice. Had 1 of those treatmnt patches on left calf but seemed 100% #usavtt @beINSPORTSUSA #usmnt

Considering that we, the richest nation on Earth struggle to put a decent pitch out there like 50 percent of the time, I would never mock Trinidad for having a lousy field.

It's just frustrating in this instance because the game is so important and this is a potential variable that could screw us

Yeah some of these fields are worse than most high school fields. Is this the one that’s like adjacent to the runway?

that was St Vincent- in a cricket field. to be fair- T&T is way more professional a setup than StV... and this isn't even their main stadium.

as bad as the track looks- and I'm sure the field is soggy too- the field is crowned to drain the water over to the areas on the sides... just like it's showing. granted- that water looks like it has nowhere to go now, but the field at least seems to be doing what it was designed to do.

So ESPN3 has literally every meaningless UEFA match streaming today but not IRE-WAL and UKR-CRO ;(

Guess the game in the background will be Iceland stomping Kosovo

fwiw, here's a note from my German friend - the soccer-crazed Bayern season ticket holder who keeps me posted on all things sports-related. He is normally somewhat harsh on our German-Americans - for example he always maintained that Julian Green was not an international-level player.

Subject Pulisic: I’m pretty sure that you are excited about the guy, but I believe you don’t know how excited you really should be, in my opinion. This is the best football-material ever to come from the US and he is consistently improving. Having him in my fantasy team and he is bringing big dividends. Best thing that could happen to him and the USMNT is the fact that Dembele has left Dortmund. That opens the first team place for him. I think the BVB-officials knew for a long time, that they needed a replacement for D. soon, so they gave him a lot of playing time last year already. He has gone another big step this year and, for me, is one of the Top 3-key players at Dortmund. Expect great things from this guy. Dortmund is playing well in the Bundesliga, but I also think they haven’t had any big game yet, while, in the CL they lost both games quite clear. Especially the game against Tottenham was really bad. The next two months will show where both teams, Bayern and Dortmund are. However, 5 points infront, so early in the season is a good thing to have for BvB.

I’m not yet sure what to think about McKennie. He is now in a good Bundesliga-team and will get playing time. He is probably in a position which Christian Pulisic was in about 1 ½ years ago. After scoring 2 goals coming in twice in the first two teams he has played more for Schalke. His grades are mediocre but not bad for a 19 year old in his first professional season. We have to watch him closely in the next months. I’m not sure whether the World Cup won’t to be one year to early for him!?

...

Was relatively impressed by the USMNT’s performance against Panama. It’s always good when you have the “can-opener” early. That opens up the game, forces the opponent to change their tactics and gives you more space for counter-attacks. Still, they shouldn’t be too sure to win easily in T&T. It will be hot and humid and, God beware, let the “Trinidadians” score first and you will see the pressure will rise tremendously. Suddenly, nothing works, and even games like this, will get lost. I’ve seen it a hundred times in soccer. Still, I believe it will be one of the thousand times I’ve NOT seen this happen. And Pulisic will make it, you will see.

Not the only pictures out there.
ok. but those pictures do show the sideline pretty clearly all the way to the corner... also show the track in about 3" of standing water, while the sidelines show none. leaves me confident to call bs on 12" of standing water at the corner flag based on the info at hand.

but I'm not married to this opinion and don't really care- new pics, and I'm fully on board.

I forgot about McKennie.  Looking just now he played 25 minutes in the first two matches, but has 221 in the last three -- only three games but that's a true starter on a mid-upper table club in the Bundesliga at 19.

ETA:  why exactly isn't he involved with the USMNT?  Just a case of letting him get more established at Schalke?  If he starts all year I bet he makes the squad for Russia.  Arena called up young players at the last minute in both 2002 and 2006 IIRC.
