US Men's National Team (4 Viewers)

thanks- that's what I thought.

but I think The mini-me is there now too... got confused.
I don't know who the mini-me is, but they still have Novacovich and I think I saw he had a goal in an exhibition the past week or so (probably upthread.) They've loaned him out 3 straight years. It'd be nice if he could stick this season and get some games in the Championship.

Here's the (probably false) story on MM: https://www.tuttitalenti.com/talenti/la-scheda-matt-miazga/; also: https://fiorentinauno.com/mercato-prima-di-miazga-fatto-tentativo-per-un-altro-talento-americano/

(highly suspect in that these sources seem to report that Chelsea want E20m for Miazga, which can't be true.)

This graphic is an excellent example of if/when Pulisic can turn his dribbles into assists more readily, he is going to become a world class player

Is "assists" something that can be learned?   Does it progress naturally with age after age 20?

Funny you posted this because I was thinking "he should have more assists given the spaces he gets into" after watching that video of his dribbles from '16-'19.

great question and I have no idea.

I assume it is something that can be improved since he still has 4 years of incremental development in all areas before he becomes the final product heading into his prime at 24.

The good news is that the harder part is getting the dribbles completed successfully which he excels in.  So he gets deep into the box and makes crosses but now he likely needs to be much more precise with the crosses (mostly the low hard ones) to start getting more assists.

I don't say this as an excuse but he was snake bitten last year.  He set up so many great goal scoring opportunities that normally would be buried by a top 20 type team like Dortmund's strikers.

His goals and assists per 90 were I believe were as good or better than any of the Chelsea wingers last season, so I am really interested to see what happens this fall.

Probably the best we could realistically hope for from a new coach.  If he burns last years tapes, it can only benefit Wood

New Hamburg Coach Dieter Hecking on Bobby Wood “What happened in the past doesn’t interest me. You can see that he’s looking for his chance. In practice he’s very robust, physically fit and lively. I hope he’ll be a benefit to the squad”

The Long to EPL rumor has a confirmation from ESPN

On Sunday, FS1 analyst Brian Dunseth dropped a nugget that a Premier League team is hot on Long's trail.

ESPN FC can confirm that Long has an offer from a Premier League side. And not only that, a source said that the same club has made two offers to the Red Bulls for the 26-year-old's services.

This would be some demerit level ascension.

He doesn't seem ready to me, from a distribution level primarily.

In a friendly organised at short notice this afternoon, the boys managed to emerge 4-1 winners against Oberliga team SV Rugenbergen.   Samperio and that man Bobby Wood both securing braces and staking a claim to start on Saturday against Anderlecht

I agree.

A team that needs to grab a back up for say $4-$5m for Cup games and fill in league duty might be ok if it is a lower half EPL team.  I mean if Yedlin can survive on his speed alone, maybe Long could carve out a spot....

news of his demise, greatly exaggerated?

would be nice for him to find some form given the dearth of options for the US.

never thought he was *great*, doesn't seem to combine well- but I liked his runs and he seemed like he was developing a really nice quick turn and shoot in tight spaces.

He is a "me first" striker, so when he is not scoring it looks awful.  Let's hope he finds his form of a couple of years ago which was not great but plenty good enough for a roster level player for the Nats.

scored a winning goal or two in the salad days when the US was beating top euro teams in europe.

the question is- him or zardoz?

serious question.

As much as I don't like Zardoz's skill set, I honestly could not choose based on Wood's form last season.  Ask me again in a couple of months.

You never really know until he gives it a try.  He's the same age as Geoff Cameron was when he signed with Stoke City.  Cameron hadn't even really played for the USMNT at that time.  Could be the same type of thing happening.

That is a good point.

Also Cameron's career was kind of saved by Kinnear.  Cameron fought tooth and nail to stay in the midfield until Kinnear finally convinced him that his future was a CB.  About 12 months after he made the switch to CB, he was sold to Stoke.

And Cam was not considered a top defender in the league like Long is.

He has been in England longer than he was in MLS.

Is there really anyone who watches him and doesn't think he's fantastic?
You would shocked at how many people think anyone who plays in MLS does not belong on the National team, but ten seconds after they get to Europe, they suddenly are good enough.

The worst legacy Klinsmann left us was the dividing of the fan base into worrying more about where a player plays rather than how he plays.

I find it ironic that of all the places online that talk US soccer, it is here on a fantasy football board where I can find the most balanced and knowledgeable discussions.

I'm sure you're a lot closer to all that than I am, but I didn't know it was still a thing.  And Pomykal stands out so much that I'm surprised it's a thing with him specifically.

Really hope we see all four of Adams, McKennie, Pomykal and Pulisic in a lineup at least a few times.

should be in the match-day, but US related...

Jozy with a fantastic backheel goal vs RBs tonight

and....

nagbe got his first goal for ATL. which seems insane, but then I remember the heat map.

and it's an apocalyptic thunderstorm here... coincidence?

it is worse now than it ever has been unfortunately.   Really toxic.  Twitter, reddit, Big Soccer, almost unreadable. You have to really pick and choose what you read.   The tweets I post on here tend to be from people who have some balance in their thought process.

Emmy seems to be integrating nicely into Atlanta.  He started again tonight and picked up another assist in the blow out (thanks to an early red card)

The MLS hate is unfortunate (as the league is obviously getting better) but I sort of get it from people that mostly watch and root for the National Team.

We're simply not far enough removed from the days of guys like Wondo dominating in MLS despite being unable to knock in a sitter against any sort of decent international opponent.

No doubt that MLS has advanced to a point where certain players can play there and still be successful Nats.(especially young studs like Pomykal that are <18 months away from making a trans-Atlantic jump)  But I just really hate it when guys like Roldan make their way into the lineup as first off the bench (or even spot starter) types. I feel like we've seen that movie many times over the past 5 or 6 years with a number of guys and it always ends the same way.

IMO, if you're in MLS between the ages of like 23-30 (other than maybe a goal keeper or central defender at the lower end of that range who still needs to mature) its just hard to argue that you should be anything more than an end of the roster guy for the Nats. (with the exception being a guy like Altidore who came home for just stupid money that he would never get elsewhere). Or at least I HOPE we're at that point relatively soon.   We just dont have much upside as long as we have to rely on guys like Arriola to consistently produce.

Any guesses when we'll get to see Pulisic play next?
on the US or with Chelsea?

For the US, there has been mention that the US Mexico game may not include the full batch of Euro players but I also think the choice of the game being in NY was not coincidental in that it allows for the easiest travel for the Euro based players.

For Chelsea, I am feel pretty good in saying he should see time this summer in preseason games.   Whether there will be streams or not to watch these, I don't know.

I have high hopes for him but I don't expect him to be a starter.  I am hoping that he has a good enough summer where he is the first attacking player off the bench when needed early in the EPL season.

I was thinking Chelsea, but good to know about the NY game.

Dortmund is playing Seattle tonight.

Reyna has dressed and is on the subs bench, with other scrubs like Sancho, Delaney, Zagadou, Rues, and Witsel.   Yeah, he does not look out of place in that group :)

This is kind of a "catch me up" article if you are late to the Pomykal party but it did contain one tidbit that caught my eye and that was Paxton saying Berhalter has not talked to him yet.

This does not have as much meaning as a dual nat like Dest as Paxton can only play for the US but I still kind of wish our coaches were more pro active in contacting players, telling them they are being watched for the future etc.

Meet Paxton Pomykal, the next USA soccer star who is catching the eyes of Serie A and Bundesliga clubs

There is not too much to make of this as it was just a scrimmage but I thought it was possibly important that the Werder first team played the Werder U23 team today and that Sargent scored the only goal of the game, while playing for the first team (when he could have easily been playing with the U23's at his age).

Sciaretta got a quote from Bacon about Sargent

=========================

“I don't want to say too much because I feel like I don't want to overhype him but he's an amazing talent and he can reach levels that I don't think many strikers from America have reached,” Johannsson said. “But he's still young and he still needs to learn. That's what I hope he will do that he will be patient and he will learn and he will listen to people giving him advice and stuff like this. And yeah he just needs to be patient and wait for his opportunity because he has an enormous amount of qualities. It's very exciting.”

“I just I know he's working very hard and he's doing extra work all the time but in this in this world it's a harsh world and always you don't always get what you deserve,” Johannsson added. “So he just needs to be patient and then work for his opportunities and then I think he will make it very far.”

Another good tidbit from Sciaretta is that Fortuna's coach said he intends to play Steffen in each of the next two games they have.  Steffen arrived today.

He should have Dest, Weah, Pomykal etc. on speed dial.  The future is now.

Reyna played the last 15 minutes of the first half and is still in early in the second half.

Had 5 touches I think. Drew one foul. All his passes were completed. Had a golden chance to score a header 1v1 with the keeper but put it wide
