US Men's National Team (6 Viewers)

I have not been impressed with Pulisic's consistency on driving corners.   He too often bloops too high or leaves it short.
With CP's knack in the box, I would almost prefer him not be the primary corner taker.  (So that he can be in the mixer ready to pounce.)  But who else would it be?  Aaronson if he's on the pitch?  Maybe Dest?  Swag and the CB's need to be in the mixer going for headers.  Same with the #9.  Need Adams and another defender back to defend the breakaway.

Ugh, OK maybe CP is the best choice.

Gio has shown signs he can drive a corner.

This would be a massive move for him.  They came in 5th in the Bundie last season.

Union sold their top scorer from last season FWIW to Nottingham.

he's been really poor. exactly in the ways you described there.

I agree it will/should be Gio. Acosta is probably their best dead ball delivery taker- and LDLT has looked decent too... but not guaranteed or likely either will be on the field enough in the WC.

watching the u20s last night vs CR- it struck me how dominant CR was in the air.. set pieces or in play. not used to seeing a US team get so dominated that way... and it unfortunately made me think of the senior team and their lack of control in that regard too (don't get dominated, but also don't dominate... a previous US strength).

It is a sign of the times in US Soccer's growth.  I don't think it is a coincidence that as a collective unit, the program is getting better technically, specifically skill on the ball, while simultaneously getting worse in the air.

Weston is really the only player we have that excels in both areas.

I agree with @El Floppothat Acosta is the best dead ball striker we have.  I think GGG agrees with this too.  Floppo is also right that unless Adams gets hurt/suspended, Acosta will probably not be on the field enough to make an impact in this area.

That brings us back to Gio.  In the few moments in time he was not hurt last year, Gio was taking set pieces for Dortmund from all areas of the offensive third.  Given his age and the abundant talent on a team like Dortmund, I think that speaks highly to his potential in this area.

Miles showed some ability on dead balls (offensive) and Zimm is quite good defensively in the air.

I get your point about ball skills, and even tactically setting up to play the ball more to feet as a team so spending less time training and game experience bringing down the more direct ball in the air.

but the foot skill part alone doesn't seem mutually exclusive with ability in the air, and considering more and more varied type of athletes are coming into the sport- it's still strange to me that we've fallen off in that area.

I watched most of the Honduras Panama game last night.  It was my first time watching Honduras and I was not impressed, given their perfect record.

They scored on 2 PK's (not terrible calls though, just terrible plays by Panama which they had no need to foul in either case).   I thought Panama looked the more dangerous team most of the game.

Even with Honduras being the home team, I don't feel like the US should be the underdog in the semi finals.   They look to have enough talent to continue to create chances.  Hopefully they can finish them at a decent clip.

This speaks to my point exactly.  It is no surprise that the two players you mentioned are old school type CB's, with lower foot skills.  I think Zimm is REALLY good defensively in the air.  He wins balls played high into the midfield with an incredible success rate.  But I am sure you would agree that no one is going to confuse Miles or Zimm with having great feet.

I think there is more causality between feet skills and aerial skills given this point in our development period than you will notice at first glance.   Look at players like Dest, Aaronson, Pulisic, Adams, LDLT etc.  These players, as a whole, are a full level above US players from previous generation technically but I am sure you will agree none of them posses the physicality needed to also be dominant(or even just good) in the air.

Maybe in another generation, more players like Weston will evolve, although even saying this, there are not tons of players who can be dominant in the air and on the ground even in the best countries.

More info on the Pefok move

@RaeComm

Per @berger_pj @SPORT1, #USMNT striker Jordan Siebatcheu (Pefok as he is referred to in the USA) to fly to Berlin ahead of likely move from YB to FC Union. Medical check tomorrow, 4 year deal, 6 million Euro transfer which can rise to 8 mill with bonuses. Awoniyi successor.

I like the move for Pefok.  If he's getting regular run this full in Bundes (and hopefully knocking in a few goals) I like his chances of making the Qatar roster.

DR continues to roll...just now beating Jamaica 1-0.

This will be a chance for him to show his true qualities, with nowhere to hide.

I'm still hoping that sub performance vs Mex was an aberration and not indicative of his normal workrate and effort. And if it was, that upcoming bundie play kicks his ### and gets that out of him.

Tbh, I've been less impressed from his appearances for the US than I have been with Haji's (similar player and main competition if GGG decides to include that type of guy...although I guess Pepi is on there too)

the tweets say it is the first FIFA tournament, at any level, that DR has qualified for.  How cool...
Amazing! I forgot that the win qualified them for the WC. I was thinking we had narrowed to 8, not 4.

All they have to do is beat Mex and they're in the Olympics too! (Assuming Mex beats Guat in the 10pm game).

Well we can't blame Concacaf for this

Christian Pulisic was fouled in the final third more frequently (every 92 minutes) than any other player in the Premier League last season (10+ starts)

Probably fouled by concacaf players.

Well, ####.

I thought Johnny Perez fouled the guat guy from behind on the break before Mex broke the other way leading to that free kick....but no replays, so who knows.

Andy...has the rule changes for handballs again? That guat kids arms were at his side...terrible call that should have had VAR. Karma that it got saved.

Guat getting some terrible calls going against them here. The PK, and now this yellow when the giant kid got all ball and didn't even touch the mex player.

Are you sure this is correct?  That's not even once a game.

Rules have not changed but with out var, it is a split second call.  I too thought hand was close to body.

VAR is being used.  They have two VAR refs in place.  Although I think I heard it went into place after the US game.

can't tell if he is trolling or not.... :)

Bummed for Efra, Araujo & Ochoa. This means no 2024 Olympics for them.

- Cruel format. Mexico concedes 1 goal over 480 minutes, doesn’t qualify for either tournament
