US Men's National Team (9 Viewers)

Right now he is the best option with Adams out and the more time he gets there the better he can be.
Prior to these 2 games, I actually thought Weston would make a better fill in for Adams than Musah since Wes is a better passer. Not sure that Wes has the discipline to maintain defensive shape or stay home as the ball progresses into the attacking 3rd when we have possession.

I’d hesitate writing Aaronson’s obits considering Canada was overloading that side all night long with world class attackers. I don’t anyone would have said he’s better than those guys going into the match and that’s obviously the conclusion after, but that could be said for anyone but the guys out last night.

Booth has not impressed me thus far, but if he's on the GC roster maybe he'll show out some.
he is not on Gold Cup roster
Shame. I wonder why he's not on that roster?

The expectation is that he's going to be sold. He played really well at the end of the season and there are rumors of big clubs sniffing around (not sure I buy that someone like Manchester United would buy him, but who the hell knows)

Utrecht want to cash in and I'm guessing they asked US Soccer not to bring him in for the Gold Cup and risk injury. Frustrating (as I too would like to see him play extended minutes) but I get it. the Dutch League and its clubs are fertile ground to develop young attackers and I get wanting to stay on their good side.

I think it is far more than one game against Canada IMO. I watched almost every minute he played this season at Leeds. The last 6 months were a mess. And these last 2 games with the US should not really give any one confidence that his play at Leeds was not going to carry over.

I don't think any one is writing his obits. I think we are suggesting he needs to find his feet at the club level again before worry about the US. He is still only 22, it would be crazy to write him off this early.

Aaronson was working hard to help Scally deal with Davies in the first half before Davies switched sides. It seemed like that was his focus - like an annoying gnat harassing Davies and a few times rotating in behind when Scally was drawn out.

Roster construction at 23 is FAR more crucial than at 26.

For example last night, when the US closed up shop, it was clear that Pepi was not built for that role. But a player like Sargent is. But can we afford to bring 3 #9's in a 23 man roster?

This is an area I will be watching VERY closely when GGG starts to select this fall.

no can ever question his work rate. Even at Leeds when he was struggling, he ran his nuts off. But that is no longer enough for a team at the slowly rising level that the US is on. We can't really afford to have a player that has no confidence when he is on the ball IMO. He has to regain that IMO.

For you guys that were mentioning Brandan Craig, I am a big fan, at least at his age group.

I don't know if there are any ties, or if Ream would even be interested but it would be some nice synergy if US Soccer some how got Ream and Craig to communicate because Craig is effectively a right footed Ream. Great on the ball, but slow of foot. It would be nice if Ream could some how impart how he was able to raise his game from good every day pro in the MLS and Championship, to very good in the EPL.

Reminder that this is the Gold Cup roster. The midfield continues to look rough each time I look at the construction

They just want to play Roldan SO badly. It really is insane.

I have never been a Roldan hater but he has had 32 caps and at his age he is not going to get any better. He does not solve any problems we have in the roster. It feels like a wasted spot and any minutes he get will be wasted as well in terms of learning for the main squad.

Yeah, I dont hate the guy. He seems like a good locker room guy and he's fine for his level. But he's pretty much the poster boy for the "mediocre MLS guys keep getting chances" crowd. He's good enough to help win the Gold Cup against a bunch of minnows and the Canada/Mexico B teams but he has no future in the program.

They should use that spot to give experience to someone who might be able to contribute going forward.

Who's not in the squad that would help us win the Gold Cup in his place?

Well I guess that is where I differ in thought process. I don’t think we should be rostering a B team with a focus entirely on winning. I would focus more on players who might not yet have received a chance.

Yes Roldan may very well be the best choice to help win a Gold Cup but I don’t understand how that helps the future of the main squad.

We know GGG wants players to get a feel for the team before he plays them. Rostering a player who might be for the future helps get through that process for GGG.

Yeah, agree to disagree. I get that we can't field a "A" team for both tournaments. But I absolutely do want to win our continental championship.

Without having to qualify for #Debacle2026, this cycle should be all about identifying who's going to provide the depth and competition for the starters. Who's going to help the US compete at the WC. Obviously we want to win the GC and anything else we play in, but this is about building for the Cup.

I only care about World Cup outcomes.

Winning these ancillary cups is nice and hopefully helps grow the fanbase and revenue for USS (even with streaming catastrophe), but at the end of the day I just don't care very much.

I'll evaluate Berhalter on the World Cup performance and that's it. The Berhalter meatriders will point to unimportant wins as we get closer to the WC just like they pointed to the Gold Cup and other crap to defend Berhalter, but that's just a distraction from the real prize.

The US should expect to win the Nations League and the Gold Cup. We won't win them all the time but that should be the expectation. And at this point you shouldn't get bonus points for meeting expectations. For this cycle, competing in the Copa and going far at the WC is what we should be looking at.

I was expecting/hoping to win the Nations League. I am not quite as hopeful for the Gold Cup.

Qatar is bringing their full team and Mexico looks to have rostered almost an identical team to the Nations League. Granted they were out of their depth against the A squad but it is likely to be a different story against the Gold Cup roster.

It looks like Canada is taking the same approach we did though so they will not be any where near full strength either.

Then why even follow the team? If nothing matters outside of 3 games every 4 years, why waste your time with any sort of time investment in the team?

I am not saying you are wrong in only caring about the WC, as you can enjoy the sport how ever you like but I can't comprehend wasting any time on something I did not care about for 99% of the cycle.

As I recall, Weah had to track back a bunch to provide some defense on that side. Likely because Canada was trying to key on it and beat Scally and Aaronson with Davies.

I was speaking generally that should be the expectation. There will be times we prioritize other things for sure and this GC is one of those times.

Is the GC still every 2 or 3 years? Need to make it every 4 like the Euros. Make it a bigger deal.

The gold cup is still every two years.

I think we would all prefer it to be every 4 years but that is very unlikely as it is the Gold Cup which helps keep Concacaf afloat financially

If the Mexican fans ever abandoned their team in the US, every game would look like last night in the stands if they are intent on using the big stadiums.

I think that was one of the issues with attendance. Lots of el tri fans bought tickets thinking they'd be in the finals but they got smoked by the US.

That's what I saw too... so much so that it had the look if intent. So this was a coaching decision IMO to use Aaronson as cover for Davies or David (I know I saw him pop up on the opposite wing... maybe not for David but Kone?). he did a decent job with that- Davies was mostly kept under wraps in the 1st half.

So if we're upset at the kid for playing wide too much, I think that ire should be directed at the coach.

and that's regardless of his relatively poor play with the ball, as Andy points out. something he must improve or there's no point to him on the A squad other than a late sub as a forward to help close games down.
How many times now has Mexico fired it coach where a loss to the US was his last match?
or a win to Panama

Honduras’s men’s football team is at loggerheads with a Louisiana club after its players backed out of a friendly match hours before kickoff, citing poor field conditions.

Honduras had scheduled the match against Barbados as preparation for this summer’s Gold Cup, Concacaf’s regional championship, which will run from 24 June to 16 July in various US cities.

The Baton Rouge Capitals Soccer Foundation, whose home state has a large population of Hondurans, had arranged the match and agreed to act as hosts at the municipally owned Olympia Stadium.

But the pitch at the 7,000-seat venue, where high school American football teams regularly play, had several large patches covered with sand, while its stands have signs of deterioration. Some of the biggest names on Honduras’s roster told their federations that they would not play in the match after training at Olympia Stadium on Saturday evening, according to Honduran sports news outlet Diez.

James Vilas of the Capitals foundation said his organization – which competes in a regional developmental league – learned on Sunday morning about the players’ boycott. Organizers, who had announced that tickets could be bought for $80 at the stadium, sent a statement at 10.50am on Sunday saying the match, which was scheduled for an 8pm kickoff, was canceled.

Demarai Gray has switched international allegiance from England to Jamaica. The Everton forward, who has played through the age groups for England, has been named in Jamaica’s squad for the upcoming Gold Cup.
always liked him- solid speedy player. shouldn't trouble the A team, but might give the B team fits.

wow... I mean, it's an international friendly with a decent sized regional team competing- they can't do better than a HS football field?

hoping this next season brings more consistency from our bigger players at the club level. they need to play.

but I do think Weah is a guy who was one of the best players over these two games- and some of that defensive work he's been forced into for club seems to have helped his game in that regard. he really was all over providing cover while still getting forward. that kind of work could really open up some tactical formations... if GGG goes that route.

oh! btw- don't remember anybody commenting. but after Taj shoved Aaronson on his way off the field getting subbed... I loved CP giving him a shoulder on a subsequent play. not a stupid Dest card level thing, but enough to send a message not to **** with our players.

And I have no problem with Roldan. The guy is a very useful jackknife who can play almost anywhere on the field as needed, and adds high floor, low-ceiling consistency especially in the MF to a squad that will likely be all over the place. Also provides a link to the A team in terms of how to approach camp and the games for these younger players. Zero problem with his inclusion- unless one of you brought some not included super youth that's killing it as a similar type of player... but I haven't heard that name yet.

Time wasting is a bigger transgression than a shove in the back?

As I recall, Weah had to track back a bunch to provide some defense on that side. Likely because Canada was trying to key on it and beat Scally and Aaronson with Davies.

Most national teams struggle to get their players to perform at their equivalent club levels.

We are in such a unique spot right now because so many of our players are out performing their club levels.

Weah is just one example of many.

This speaks more to how rough things have been at the clubs than anything else.
hoping this next season brings more consistency from our bigger players at the club level. they need to play.

but I do think Weah is a guy who was one of the best players over these two games- and some of that defensive work he's been forced into for club seems to have helped his game in that regard. he really was all over providing cover while still getting forward. that kind of work could really open up some tactical formations... if GGG goes that route.

absolutely should've been.

but thankfully that ref did a solid job on the night, even if it felt like he started to favor CAN over the last part of the game (there was a clear foul on CP that went uncalled that led to CAN doing something... and Musah couldn't win a foul most of the night).

unless it's the GK holding the ball for 30 seconds after flopping on it for another 15. (actually liked Turner's game management in the 2nd half doing this).

I felt like the ref was calling it tight for most of the night, trying to keep a repeat of the Mexico from happening. But then kept his cards in his pocket for things that should have been booked.

I hate when a keeper catches a ball with no one around then lies down to waste time. They want to speed up the game or get more actual game play then stop letting them do this (among other things)

I was hoping for Pomykal, but as always, injured.

Honestly, they don't need to stop it at all. They just need to start the 6 second (or what ever it is) clock instantly when he catches the ball. if he wants to waste the time on the ground that is his choice. But refs allow like ten seconds to run off while the keeper lounges on the ground, and gets back up before they seem to start the imaginary timer.

The refs have almost all the tools needed to prevent time wasting but they are never enforced. I thought the sport took a huge step forward when the WC used accurate timing for injury time but all the leagues ignored it and we are back to refs tacking on less than half of what has been really wasted.
