Tyler Adams has the most successful tackles per 90 in the Premier League
I watched most of the second half yesterday... Adams was really quiet during that time. Only time I really noticed him was towards the end, he was late reading a pass into the center circle on transition, then was late tracking back after he was turned.. allowing the man to receive a pass back and continue on towards goal untouched before hitting a shot from outside the box (ineffectually, but I'd never seen him so slack two times in a row). You could see the moment he realized and then switched gears, but it was too late.

As we sit 2 years post the last World Cup, it got me thinking about what's happened to our player pool. We haven't had a lot of turnover in starters nor have we (obviously) had a lot of retirements. But our depth has changed significantly.

Here's my broad strokes 23 man roster of players not included in the 2022 World Cup roster - yes, I know some were due to injuries but the point is that we have another 23 after the 26 man roster called. For the record, there are no projections to this, just where players are as of right now. And no players are assumed to make one-time switches.

GK - Schulte, Steffen, Celentano
FBs - Fossey, Wiley, Tolkin, D Jones
CBs - Richards, McKenzie, Miles, Trusty
Mids - Tessmman, Johnny, A Morris, Tillman, Busio, Cremaschi
Wings - Cowell, Zendejas, P Aaronson, Luna
Strikers - Pepi, Balogun

Easy to overlook how much progress has been made to the player pool in 2 years. We don't have a full 2 years to the next World Cup, but if we see anywhere near the growth we might be surprised at our pool.

Great exercise, pre... Thanks!

Some names like Booth and Puksas, amongst others I'm sure others will think of could slot in too. you could put a respectable starting 11 together from that list that would be competitive regionally.

For sure. I left off Lund who I know you like (but just doesn't do much for me). The fullbacks are probably the most questionable as Poch chose not to call any of them the last window so he's clearly not enamored with anyone.

Wings are another area as we've used Musah ahead of these guys. Suggests the Campbell, Albert, Berchimas types that are going to emerge in the next 2 years are likely to pip these guys.

But it's a good group even without a ton of star power. To your point on the regional wins, I think a decent coach and this roster would qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Yeah.. my little smiling sniper!

Looking at that group, I was most concerned with the wings and the generating quality creativity out of the MF... But solid top to bottom, especially with a couple of quality 9s up top to score goals.

@FabrizioRomano on Antonee Robinson being linked to Liverpool:

"It’s true Liverpool have been following and scouting him, but their preference at the moment is still for younger players, so age could be a factor. But let’s see because he’s been fantastic and the situation could be open. I don’t think it’s one for January, I think Fulham want to keep him until the end of the season"

I've been seeing the same "too old" comments as well.

This could be an interesting Jan window... And certainly summer for US players.

I can see the concern. With Jedi's style of play, him losing even a half step could see him drop from a top LB to just an average one (average for EPL that is, still very good for the US). But at 27, I guess the tippy top teams want to be very careful.

Yeah, his speed is very much a part of his appeal, but 27.... Too old?!!! He's got 4-5 years before teams should even worry about his speed falling off, especially since he's never had issues with leg injuries. Usain Bolt was 30 when he won his 3rd Olympic gold. Unless Liverpool's expectation is to make money off of trading him in the future, then I'm not sure why this issue is coming up.

The way he plays, I don't know that 4-5 years is viable tbh. He's all over the field, mostly through sprints and then sprinting to close passes and players off with pace and physicality. That style doesn't have legs, imo... at least at the upper elite Liverpool, City, RM etc level. I think 2 is safe.. and they'll have to determine if he's worth shelling out for that vs someone else. He's clearly better than the other names I've seen as competition, but they're all 20-23, so can grow into their game.

LOL at the Guardian having Pulisic at 95 in their top 100 players list.
 Might be a little high, but you gotta get those American consumers in. Borderline top 10 at his position? Not completely out of line given the last 1 1/2 years IMO.
Seems about right, but their relative rankings of AC Milan players suggests that whoever wrote the article doesn't follow Italian soccer at all. Morata above Pulisic is crazy. And Reijnders not even being on the list (while Morata is ranked) is even more crazy.

I've watched a lot of their games this season, and it's pretty clear that this season, the order has been:
Reijnders
Pulisic
Leiao
some other guys
Morata

Also kind of wonder if Jedi should be on the list, given how underrepresented left backs seem to be

I understand they are not as sexy but I am more interested in top 10 players at their positions, than I am a top 100 overall which leaves certain positions severely under represented.

I would break down the modern game into something like this for groups:

GK
CB's
LB
RB
DM
8's
AM
Left Wingers
Right Wingers
Strikers

You can do a top 10 for each position group and end up with effectively a more useful top 100 in the world.

Jedi 100% makes this type of list list for LB's. Pulisic would be close but I think he cracks a top 20 winger list in the world (since he can play both sides effectively the same)

I'd probably include 20 CBs, and make it a top 110, so all positions are equally represented. Agree that Jedi makes it, and if you lump all wingers together I think Pulisic makes it. I assume nobody else is especially close right now.

I agree, I don't think anyone else is close.

In an alternate reality where Adams is healthy for an entire season, he could be a top 30ish type DM, but that is probably the closest we have. The 8's are absolutely loaded around the world.

Dest has the talent level to be a top 40ish RB IMO, but we need to see how he recovers from the injury and how his mind set is.

damn it

Paulo Fonseca on Christian Pulisic’s availability vs Roma:

"I expected that we could have Pulisic. He is fine but these last two days he has an ankle problem, which is another one. He hasn’t trained with us. It is a problem that arose during the recovery process, he is not ready for tomorrow, not even for the bench. Not for the previous problem but this new one that has come up."

Jedi and Richards start today.

Adam’s does not dress. FotMob does not list him as either suspended or hurt so I have no idea why he did not dress.

Tyler Adams was rested today for Fulham-Bournemouth. Andoni Iraola has hinted multiple times to give him a break here and there to save him for the long run of the season. Busy schedule, can’t start Adams every game.
More info

====

Asked why he was missing from the squad, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “He finished injured the other day, when he played the game against Palace.

“It’s not something big.

“I think it’s small muscle, rotator or something like this, but obviously he was injured

I got home telling my wife I was going to watch the game, what with CP and Musah playing.

Neither are playing.

Looks like it's cleaning up the apt instead. :kicksrock:

Don't recognize those other 2. Any US involvement for them yet?
from the last line of his tweet, it does not sound like it.

I never heard of the other two either. I assume maybe they are dual nats born abroad but I really don't know.
both were born in the US. I think Delplace moved to France at like 3 and De Marzi to Italy at 12 or 13. I have no idea how good either are but they both have legit US ties.

What an odd season for Juventus.

They are 1 of only 2 teams across the entire top 5 leagues in Europe to not have a loss so far this season (PSG is the other).

And Juve are not even in a Champions League spot in Serie A due a MASSIVE amount of draws.

I wonder if they will loan him out immediately this winter or simply let him adjust to the change and let him train and loan him out next summer?

Bournemouth agree fee with DC United to sign breakthrough US teenager Matai Akinmboni. The 19-year-old to have medical now before completing formalities and joining Andoni Iraola's squad

James Sands is being loaned to St Pauli (Bundesliga) for the rest of the season. St Pauli is a promoted side that is in a relegation fight.

I don't really see any future as a DM for the Nats but I still feel like if he'll move to center back he might have a path. Sands is still only 24 so, given our need at the back, he could still emerge as a back of the roster guy in his prime.

Rumor that they will loan him to Lorient in Ligue 2 (they are in first place at the moment).

Bournemouth is not a loan army club as they are the poorest club in the EPL. Their investments really need to work out. This should be a good landing spot as they will do everything possible to ensure Akinmboni develops.
