US Men's National Team (16 Viewers)

The more I watch Tillman the more I think we lucked out.

He may not play with the energy level and urgency that I like to see but he is giving us almost everything we expected out of Gio. He is significantly softening the face plant of losing out on what we thought was going to be a core player.
Ok, it’s not just me. Saw this online today :lmao:

This is South Africa all over again. US has the vast vast vast majority of possession and are losing 1-0 on only I think the second time Morocco attacked the final 3rd.

Had to stop watching...taking my daughter to something.

What i really didnt like...for all the possession in the back line, which is fine, the passes were so sloppy and lacking pace or accuracy. If youre going to play it from the back, the passes have to be decisive every time and not behind the player or slow.

The 30 mins i saw, Campbell and Tsakris were both really positive and aggressive...needed more of the ball. I wanted more of that from Raines, who i can understand didnt want to take too many chances from his 6/8 role...but they were there to be taken.

And again, way too sloppy and slow moving the ball around the back line to support that style of play.

Such a bummer for the US to go out whole looking like the better team on the front foot.

I didnt watch the rest...GK howler? Again? Lack of clincal finishing? Anything else?

Who do you guys think elevated and should be in the back of our minds for the big boy team?

The US gave up 6 goals in the tournament and the keeper was directly responsible for 3 of them. That is completely unacceptable given how few shots the team faced.

I was hoping that losing Kochen was not going to kill us. I did read when Kochen was removed from camp, that many fans who knew these players preferred Beavers or Eyestone over Beaudry but Mitrovic stuck with Beaudry the whole way.

The biggest problem yesterday was not finishing, even if better finishing should have got them at least 1 more goal. They simply were not creating a large amount of chances like they did in every other game.

In terms of the big boy team, it probably remains the two guys that were missing, Kochen and Banks. Both play a position of need for the US.

For the rest, there is clearly some solid professional talent in players like Gozo, Cremaschi, Wynder, Miller, Raines and a few others. Campbell was the one guy everyone was hoping would pop and he did the exact opposite. I am 99% sure none of the players who played in the U20 WC will have any effect on this cycle for the senior side. After that it will depend on how their careers develop at the club level.

While our senior side is starting to finally age, they are not yet at the point where we need wholesale changes to the roster. Many of them likely have one more cycle in them. It would not shock me if a Mathis or a Cavan get to the senior side before many of the U20 players.

Pulisic looks to be dressed and participating in training today. Goff posted that Poch is expected to talk about his availability for the game tomorrow later today.

I didn't watch all the U20 matches, but to me, many of the guys that LOOKED (at least to my uneducated eye) to have the most obvious transferable skill (in terms of a role with the big squad) are also probably blocked by some of the established or (presumably) higher upside guys that already there. I think Wynder is probably the exception, as he probably has starting CB POTENTIAL....but he's also probably the furthest away due to his lack of first team experience and club situation.

I liked Raines quite a bit, but is he gonna be better than the 6's/8's that we already have? I think Habroune is similar. Cresmaschi looked good at this level and probably still has some upside, but I think he's PROBABLY a B-teamer/back end of the roster guy at best. Kinda seems like Niko's level as well.

Didnt really get a great feel for any of the wings/FB's, but nobody really popped for me. Obviously the GK was awful.

Hopefully the 2 supposed crown jewels of our youth program pop at the U17's.

And sadly, France won yesterday, which means had the US played just a little better in the second half yesterday, their semi final match up would have been against a team they already beat 3-0.

It would have been a fabulous chance to make a finals, which I believe would be the first for a US means team at any level for a World Championship (U17 WC, U20 WC, Olympics and World Cup).

I THINK France left a roster spot open and called in Saïmon Bouabré after he was released for the international break. He scored both goals vs Norway.

I’m listening to Poch’s press conference.

Pulisic responded well to his 20 minute sub appearance and trained today. If he looks good tomorrow, they are intending to play him.

Jedi was 100% ruled out of tomorrow’s game. His knee is still bothering him. I don’t know if he’s trained at all while in camp.

Poch spent a long time talking about Roldan. I have heard enough coach speak over the years to know that he’s building the groundwork to show that Roldan is the perfect end of roster player. I think if they take four defensive midfielders, Roldan is going sneak in in front of Johnny. This is probably dependent on what the roster size is. I still don’t know if it’s 23 or 26.

and while I understand this next part below, I am still disappointed:

Poch said due to the quick turn around and elevation of Denver, and not wanting to risk players, that we should expect multiple changes in the lineup and shape. From the way he was talking I think Richards, Tillman, Balogun, and Tessman are all very likely not to start since they played the entire game against Ecuador. I also expect that possibly Weah and Weston may not start either.

He did not mention the keeper so it will be interesting to see if he continues to stick with Freese who appears to have clearly overtaken Turner at this point.

Poch also mentioned one of the reasons for the rotation was to make sure that the other players can make their cases and knock on the door loudly to push for their inclusion. I also understand this line of reasoning but I hate it because it is reasoning that only comes from us being hosts of the WC. Were we neck deep in qualifying right now, I feel like the best team would be put on the field and not a big rotation.

Any word from Poch on Tessman and Morris? (Other than possibly resting Tess)
not that I heard but I think there were a few more questions left in the press conference but I have not yet watched the end.

edit: I just checked, there was only two more questions I missed. One on Australia as an opponent and one on what its like to have to change stadiums for every game when many countries have a single national stadium.

Oh how cool. I just found out a member of the Cape Verde team that just qualified for the WC is American, and was born in a town near by me, before his parents returned to Cape Verde.

The parents were concerned about his education in Cape Verde, so he came back to Massachusetts and was here for junior high, high school and college. He even played a little in the USL.

Puerto Rico is playing Argentina. really wish that was the US.

CAN dominated AUS, but lost 0-1 (GK stood on his head). CAN is playing COL (who I'd also prefer to AUS) who spanked MEX 4-0. Mex are playing ECU.

Here is the lineup. Formation is your guess, maybe Weah at LWB? Wish it was Balogun starting up top though

==========

Freese; M Robinson, McKenzie, Richards, Freeman, Sands, Roldan, McKennie, Pulisic, Wright, Weah

…………………Freese

……..Miles…..Richards…..McKenzie

Freeman……Sands…..Roldan………Weah

………………Weston……….Pulisic

…………………….Wright

I'm actually ok with this lineup.
