Weird Food Combinations You Like (1 Viewer)

Ketchup and butter sandwiches. Had them at Gramma's house after preschool (around the corner) way back in the day. Still make it from time to time for a quick snack.

Or if I want some protein, a peanut butter and butter sandwich. Yum.

I actually threw up a little.
Maybe this will work for you....? Mayonnaise on bread. That's all. We called it a "Wish Sandwich", as in, we wish there was some meat in there. haha.

My best friend/neighbor growing up would put Saltines between two pieces of white bread with either mayo or Miracle Whip and called them "cracker sandwiches". His mom didn't cook.

That said, I've had more than a few cracker sandwiches growing up with him - not horrible.

I feel like there is a handful of FBGers that were raised by wolves, or gypsies or maybe gypsie wolves and you guys never shared your stories.

:lmao:

You're not far off.....my next door neighbor was an only kid, his dad was a bookie and his mom was the sweetest, nicest, prettiest lady in the world, but lived on Miller Light and didn't really parent the same way my mom did. Oddly, they were best friends too, but they ran in very different social circles. They divorced when my buddy was 7 and let's just say Danny Jr. didn't have much in the way of supervision. He ate at our house A LOT.

I don't know how weird these are but I have two. When I mention these to people I get some funny reactions. They're not weird to me. 1. Peanut Butter and jelly on a (bacon) cheeseburger. I'm a peanut butter fanatic so I love this combo.

If you're ever in the Portland area, you have to visit a Killer Burger because they feature a Peanut Butter Pickle Bacon Burger that is dynamite. https://killerburger.com/

For some reason I seem to be the only one who doesn't like mixing in sweet with the non sweet. Nothing wrong with dessert, I just don't like it mixed into the meal.

Thanks.

Can you give some examples of sweet + savory combinations that others like that you don't?

Not to answer for LH, but Walkman cleverly mentioned an example earlier without really spelling it out and it's a divisive issue for sure: Pineapple on pizza. Specifically, pineapple with pepperoni or spicy sausage so you get the sweet/savory combo. I love it. Others think that's tantamount to a crime. :lmao:

Fridays are calzone nights with Mrs. GM making her homemade dough in the morning. Here's what she makes me....

- Pepperoni
- Hot Italian sausage
- Shredded mozz
- Diced red and green peppers
- Pepperoncinis
- Pineapple
- Kale

Coats the dough with some sea salt and Italian seasoning. You know, after a bad day and a bad week, it's nice to know this awaits me for dinner. Kicks the weekend off right.

My dad used to eat peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. He'd eat like 4 of those after getting home from work.
Saw a YT video the other day on forgotten depression era food and this was on it as well as a banana & mayo sandwich
It mentioned how peanut butter used to be very dry

Lots of southern food items listed already - most of these I don't care for but they are common around the areas I've lived:
  • Banana and Mayo sandwich
  • Tomato and Mayo sandwich
  • Peanuts in Coke - remember my uncle doing this 40-45 years ago
MIL has done ranch on pizza for a long time - I tried it and it's ok but I don't need to make my pizza more fattening and calorie dense.
There is not much better in the summer than a tomato sandwich. Fresh from the garden with Mayo on white bread and a little salt and pepper.

I don't know that's it's weird as famous chef Mason Hereford from Turkey And the Wolf in New Orleans does this and I copied but on Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwiches now I put a ton of roasted sunflower seed kernals on top. A little like adding peanut butter for the nutty taste but also adds a little crunch. Fantastic. He also puts a ridiculous amount of fresh dill that I also do. Not really weird as dill on tomatoes is normal. But really good.

I would add one more thing to make it even better......jalapeños. the flavor profile for pepperoni, pineapple, and jalapeño is amazing. It's my go to pizza

Big fan if this on toasted bread. Once in a while I’ll go really wild and add a slice of cheese. Simple & delicious

I also make salads without the lettuce. Iceberg lettuce has almost no nutritional value

If only they had come up with other types of lettuce by now!

:lmao:

My wife makes a kale salad with some apples and other tasty treats and man oh man do I sure like that.

You ever grill your lettuce? Did that once with blackened salmon and holy moly was that good.

Got the idea from a local joint that serves this:

Hardwood Grilled Steak Salad
Grilled romaine hearts, tenderloin steak medallions and flash fried brussels sprouts topped with multi-colored grape tomatoes, parmesan cheese, and our house-made lemon Caesar dressing.

Top 5 salad in the world, easy.
Man, I'm no salad guy (shocker) but that sounds amazing.

Yeah, I've probably ordered a salad as my main meal less than 20 times in my life (I used to travel a ton for work too, so a lot of dining out) but I've sought this salad out at least 3 or 4 times since they opened.

Banana and mayonnaise sandwich. As a kid I used to love peanut butter and banana, and one day we were out of peanut butter so I tried mayo instead. I love em.
Ok, now that's weird

It's pretty common in the South. Not sure in other places.

The most common is probably all three - Banana, Peanut Butter and Mayonnaise. Delicious. Dukes Mayonnaise of course.
Did I co-invent this then? I've lived in the south (MS, TN, and AR) all my life and never found another person who says "yeah I eat those". Usually I get "ugh, mayo is gross".
In high school I loved a peanut butter and miracle whip sandwich. Creamy peanut with tangy miracle whip.

Fry Bologna so it makes the little bowl, fill bowl with Jelly for a FB&J sandwich.
You had me at "fry bologna", but lost me at filling it with jelly.

I used to make fried bologna sandwiches all the time. Bologna on white w/ some American cheese.... mmm I can taste it now.
My mom used to fry bologna in a pan but she would cut slits on the edges so they bubbled up less. We ate a dairy-less version with mustard and lettuce on white toast.

We used to have fried bologna but we'd have fried carrots and potatoes too. A balanced diet is important.

My grandfather used to make fried bologna and a huge slice of raw onion . As a kid this seemed nasty . He also ate something I love. He didn’t invent the wheel but he would spread ricotta on crusty Italian bread , add black pepper to the ricotta and then top it with vinegar peppers.

It's probably been 40 years since I had a fried bologna sandwich. Reading this description, I could taste it like it was yesterday.

Choice of what's added can vary and be good - but I went with the weirdest thing I put in it (as a kid) and Jelly won the weird combo award.

Cheese is too easy as it's kinda like po' man's roast beef&cheese or pastrami&cheese. Both scrumptious when grilled up.

Try that combo with Mike’s hot honey. Easily my favorite combo.
Pepperoni or bacon
Jalapeno
Pineapple
Hot honey

It's been said before, but the Monte Cristo (with powdered sugar and jelly) is really weird. But something I really like. But then, I like Marmite, especially with a good English cheddar. Actually, Marmite and just about anything is good - even peanut butter. Ooh. Peanut butter and everything bagel mix is great too. Sigh.
