We've cut the cable (2 Viewers)

Late to this thread. We ditched awhile ago and have been streaming via Chromecast, which works fine.  Did not think about using the COAX throughout the house to hook up antenna for over the air.  Right now I just have an antenna immediately near TV and the wife hates it.  How do you figure out if / where all the COAX are connected? Ultimately, was hoping to just put an antenna in the attic.
http://www.ebay.com/gds/How-to-Trace-a-Coax-Cable-/10000000205203345/g.html

Or a commercial tester like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCKOAnnSb3c

Is anyone familiar with an attic mounted antenna? Based on TVFool, that's what I would need to get my local channels.

Also, if I go the antenna route, how do I get it to work with all of my TVs? Is it like the same as satellite where it would have to connect to a central location and then it would go out to all the TVs through coax?

I did all of this. Check back in the past few pages. You can get an antenna and put it in your attic (I think I linked mine). Yes you can run it down to a splitter (powered/amplified one is the way to go) and then split it off to all other TVs. Check out Tablo for a streaming solution that lets you stream to all your TVs instead, and also DVR.  See my prior posts.

New streaming service option now available from Century Link.

I got an email from Spectrum (nee Time Warner) that they are now offering something similar. #### them though.
Looked into this a little bit more. So the email says it's $19.95. But it's not $19.95 because there is a $6 monthly fee. And then $15 to add sports channels. And the only way to enroll/cancel is over the phone.

Why don't they just say that it's $26? That's a competitive price for what they are offering. Nobody gives a #### about the cost breakdown, they just want to know how much they are going to pay each month. So dumb.

Well, it was a nice run.

Yep. I got the same letter yesterday. I think I will just keep rotating through each provider, taking whatever free offer they give me. Otherwise, it will be netflix and over the air.

Its odd that $10/mo makes the difference. Obviously, its more about principle than the value of money for me at this point, which is admittedly somewhat embarrassing. I think I'm going to try Hulu for a month or two next.

I agree, it's not the $10. This just reminds me of the way the cable bill started creeping up year after year. I'm not going to wait until streaming packages are over $100 to send the message.

I would be curious to see if this raise is to offset cost, or to increase profits. I've wondered if these streaming deals were started to gain market share at a loss. Sooner or later all of them will need to increase to prices closer to regular cable.

Been with Vue since the beginning. Thinking about going back to Directv. Since we have ATT for wireless they are offering $50 a month for two years, HD DVR included. Basically 50 bucks plus taxes for two years. Seems like a better deal than $40 for Vue since its a much better product imo.

Went back a few pages and didn't see it mentioned...

Plex now offers a live OTA DVR service. For about $5/mo or $40 for the year.  I know a significant hole in my setup was the ability to record live TV (sports, esp.) and watch it later.  We subscribe to Hulu, but this would definitely be an upgrade for us as Hulu runs $8 a month and it usually takes a day to get it on there.  Plus it looks like Plex has the ability to sync it to your mobile.  No doubt though you have to have the storage on your PC, but we run a Plex server as it is for home videos so I don't think this would be too complicated if I make sure our storage is satisfactory.

Prime day deals:

Surfboard modem normally $50 going on sale at 6:50 AM.

Plenty of cheap routers, lots of Netgear available now.

A couple no name powered antennas.

Tablo is a nice Live TV and DVR option. Once you make the initial investment it costs $0 per month. That's what I like about it. Trying to kill off as many recurring fees as I can.  So far it works pretty well.

They have like five different shows. Kill me.
have you tried watching at eonline.com? Some networks air episodes for free soon after airing on tv

ETA - also looks to be available on hulu though you would have to see what seasons they have

It took me a little longer than most, but I'm at the breaking point.  Tired of wasting the money on cable we don't watch.  Everything lately is just streaming or shows we could have streamed.

Antenna/mount arm ordered today.

Fire-stick at house today

And setting up Vue account to pair with Netflix/Amazon Prime account.  Not sure if I'll need Hulu, but I'm guessing I'll need to add that.

I think that should do the trick for us.  Going to pilot test it for a week so to make sure there is nothing we are missing, but the days of DirectTv are numbered.

You PSVue guys, why not move to Sling?  It's been a great solution for us.
My main/only issue is getting all the NBC sports channels and BeIn, to cover the major euro soccer leagues. PSVue included all those channels in its "core" tier for $35/mo. I think Sling does as well, but at a mid- or higher level tier. I'm going to take a closer look when I get a chance.

I would think that with Vue, you won't need Hulu.

My first comcast bill over $150 a month just came in.  I was ready to do it, cut everything but basic internet service where I'll provide the modem (which I already own).  Contacted them by chat, was offered a very good TV plan, with 120/6 up/down internet speed with HBO included (great with GoT starting back up) for $90 a month (with I'm sure certain fees and such on top of that, likely will be just under $110 or so a month).  In that basic cable alone (and only 25/4 speeds) would be $60 a month, I think I'll keep what I've got for now.

Every time I think I'm out, they suck me right back.

Yeah, when cable alone would be $60 a month (and I'm sure with taxes and fees on top getting it to around $70), paying $110 for much faster internet along with a very nice TV package (keep in mind I live too far away from towers for an antenna to work unless I go crazy and install a huge telephone pole in my yard) with HBO included is a no brainer.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just get internet then go with fire stick for TV?

Philly area, no CSN due to Dish never getting it.

Over the air also?  I bought a different antenna (VHF vs. UHF) and it added ABC in HD.  THE BACHELORETTE IS ON!!!
Haven't tried OTA yet. Trying to find the right antenna to use since I'm about 50 miles outside of the range. I've found a couple, but want to make sure they'll work for how far away I am.

From the research I did, you should have no problem. I recall seeing well reviewed VHF/UHF antennas on Amazon for 80+ miles.

This is the the one I bought, works great:

ANTOP 80 Miles Digital Amplified TV Antenna Outdoor/Attic/Roof with Multi-Directional Reception,High Performance for VHF/UHF Band with 40ft Detachable Coaxial Cable & 3 Way TV Signal Splitter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XRRK7VB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_mk2zzbGSA568P

I have this one

1byone 80 Miles Digital Amplified Outdoor / Roof HDTV Antenna with Power Supply Box, Extremely High Performance for UHF Band

Got it to pull in Steeler games from a station 40 miles away. It works great and that is just from hooking it up and laying it on the bed aiming towards the window. I am eventually going to mount it in the attic or on the roof.

I believe MattFancy has the same issue I have with OTA - mountains in between us and the towers.  I'm directly behind some very big hills/small mountains that totally eliminate any line of site.

I don't have mountains, just that I'm a good distance away from any towers. When I went to TVFool, I believe the closest station I can pick up is 47 miles away, and that's just PBS. Most of my locals are a good 50-60 miles away. Doable with an OTA antenna, but they recommend a roof antenna to get them.

Yes, I was.  Can you pick up any OTA out there in the sticks?
No hope of getting DC locals out here. I tried a Leaf a couple of years ago just for grins, and I could get a couple of local PBS channels and ABC out of Harrisonburg.

My Sling package has added for WRC & WTTG out of DC, so I could catch them if I wasn't carrying a basic cable package (basically, just DC locals). If they'd add CBS (& I'd use the Leaf for ABC), I could get rid of the cable package, but unbundled internet by my provider is just as expensive as my cable/internet/phone package so I've been in no rush to do so.

Like you, I'm loath to give up the locals.

great!  Is it an app or web site for pc?
I've had both Sling and Vue (at different times) over the past year. Sling has an app for the pc while Vue is a webpage. I don't really notice a difference between either other than the Vue page takes a little longer to load for me. With Vue, I also have times when I click on a program and it fails to load. I have to go back to the guide and select it again. I never noticed this problem with Sling.

Keep in mind that you can use your Sling or Vue login credentials to access additional content on a channels website (or through their app). Example: Discovery channel on Vue has a limited number of shows and episodes available through the pc app. On the Discovery GO app or website I get a much larger selection. I just bookmark all the different channels websites for quick navigation.

I think this site has been mentioned before in this thread but just adding it again for the latest discussions. Good maps/recommendations of OTA antenna requirements for your local area: tvfool

It ends up being $45 on Sling to get the sports channels you want. $40 for the combined package that gets you ESPN and Fox and then $5 for a Sports Extra package that gets you beIN.

Just ordered this one yesterday from Amazon.

Reaches up to 150 miles, not sure if that is accurate or not, but I like the idea of a stronger antenna to pick up locals from other towns if need be for possibly more NFL games this season.  Hopefully get it mounted this weekend and test out the strength.

So last night I installed a new TV and Soundbar at my oldest daughter's place. I just grabbed a Mohu mini antenna (I think rated for 25 miles) for her since she didn't even care about local channels, assuming it would at least get her a few channels (she's about 20 miles from Minneapolis). Instead, the TV came in crystal clear on all the normal channels with a minimum of moving the antenna around. Is it possible that this little mini antenna is better than my Amazon basics 40 mile Mohu knockoff? We often run into channels going in and out of service with the bigger antenna, despite being the same distance away as my daughter, and have to constantly move it around. If so it's an easy $18 to spend on the new mini, or I'd pay the money to upgrade to the larger Mohu if it really does make a difference over the Amazon version.
