We've cut the cable (2 Viewers)

Looking for any advice. Finally moving on from DirecTV and my $160 a month bill.

I've zeroed in on Youtube TV as having most of the 32 or so channels I care about most. Missing History Channel, A&E. And ATT Sports Southwest that has Rockets and Astros but that may change next year. Other services seem to be missing more or more important channels for me.

Any gotchas to know about Youtube TV?

I have an older TV with great picture (though not 4K), so it doesn't support newer apps. I still have an old receiver that my surround sound runs through. I use a Logitech Hub universal remote to tie everything together. Have a PS4 that I use with Plex for my media collection, and also watch Thursday football on Prime with it. Use the PS4 controller for both.

Any input on using the PS4 for Youtube TV, versus getting something else like a Fire Stick? Leaning towards getting something else so can use a remote. I'm hoping the Youtube TV DVR lets you do stuff like jump 30 seconds ahead, 6 or 10 seconds back, etc. Also can you skip past commercials in a recording or if you paused live TV? I saw some mentions on other services they wouldn't let you in some cases. I have wired ethernet available behind the TV which is much better than my wireless bandwidth there, so would prefer something with an ethernet port available.

Thanks!
I've never used YoutubeTV and know nothing about the PS4 player, but I agree with @ChiefD - get a firestick or a Roku. I have a Harmony universal remote that runs everything.

I had an older receiver that had issues "talking" to all of my mismatched components - not always, but sometimes. I got rid of that and got a Bose sound bar. My ears are so wrecked that speaker quality doesn't much matter anymore, but others have told me the sound bar sounds as good as my old Onyx surround.

Appreciate it. So anything about Fire Stick or Roku to favor one over the other? I have a little experience with a Fire Stick, set up one for my parents though that was a few years back now. But at least I know the gist with it.

I've only ever had a Roku, so can't compare. It's not a stick, but an actual device (about the size of the old Walkman CD player). It's a model #3, I think, and I've had it for years. My TV is smart, but I just use the Roku since I'm used to it.

My mother has a firestick and, based on my limited experience with it, it looks like it does the same things as my Roku does. At least, it does on stuff like performance and the apps you can load. I don't know anything about voice control or phone control.

I don't know what Plex is, either.

I prefer the cube or Apple TV box because there is more memory, less freezing up. There are more apps for IPTV on a firestick and cube vs Apple.

Plex is a media player. So if you have your own collection of movies, tv shows, sports, etc, it becomes your streaming service for your own copies essentially. Has its own player apps on most operating systems, consoles, etc. Will download metadata and subtitles for you, play lists and search capabilities and such.

Youtube TV is great. Love it.

Underrated bonus is how easy it is to sign up for/drop premium channels.

Paramount+ often has some things (ND games or national team soccer) that I might like to add it to see, then drop it again. Can you just get a day's worth then or do you get stuck paying for a month or something?

No idea how often you can add/drop -- but I know the sports package with RedZone is prorated when I add and drop.

Regardless, you could definitely do it a month at a time.

If you're a Verizon user check what they offer for discounts on streaming services. For example quite a while back they gave me free Hulu/Disney+/ESPN+ (I upgraded to the no commercial version for a few dollars a month) and a few months back I paid for a year of Paramount+ ahead of time through them and got a free year of Netflix. Not sure what their current offers are but worth checking out.

I haven't made a change yet. I wanted to clear off my DVR first. Though, finding out the YoutubeTV's DVR doesn't do well at like, frame by frame, is giving me some pause. I mean when I watch football I'm always pausing it and doing that to watch line play or coverage, not to mention questionable calls. I think that would wear on me quick. I might look into cable TV so I'd have a hardware DVR still, or even just, back to the DirecTV customer retention line and see if they cut me a big enough break.

Anyone running into this issue with yttv and firestick?

I have new sticks and haven't hit that but I have the baseball playoffs set to auto record and some of them aren't showing up in library on the firestick app but do show up in the app on my phone. Could be somewhat related.

The article is mixing both YouTube and YouTube TV but I think they mean TV.

Getting ready to make the streaming plunge. Been with DTV for 20 years. A few questions:

Is there a live streaming service that integrates best with Roku devices?

I’m a channel flipper. Which streaming service is best for this?

Is there a way to cleanly blend other apps (Disney+, AppleTV, Peacock, etc) into the streaming service guide/interface?

We’ve hoarded favorite movies/shows/games on our DVR for years. Will we miss having this ability to save things infinitely?

Surprised to see that MLB Network not only isn’t on the streaming services, but also isn’t available as part of a MLB.tv subscription. Baseball sure is in the dark ages.

What else will I love and hate if I switch? I’m sure there are others here who were in the same boat.

MLB Network is on FUBO if you want to pay for a higher-priced streaming service with a lot of channels.

Honestly, I think it is getting to the point that it is better to stick with cable/DTV than try to get multiple streaming services, especially if you like flipping channels like you say. Flipping/changing channels while streaming is much slower and annoying. I'm thinking of switching back to cable, the price is similar to get everything I want and the quality of service with cable is higher.

I would get a firestick or roku. Put all your apps on those and let them drive the bus.

I don’t know what is the best for channel flipping. From what I can tell….none of them really. Maybe YouTube TV - their interface doesn’t look too bad for that.

I use HULU Live which gets me all of our local channels, and their interface is dog crap. But I also get Disney+ and ESPN+ with my sub so there really is no sporting event I don’t get. Except the Royals. That’s a Bally sub but I may not go there this year.

You are right - MLB is in the dark ages when it comes to streaming baseball. If you leave Direct TV make sure you can get your baseball team somewhere if thats important to you.

As for price, I’ve been loyal to DTV and still like their product. But my bill is going to get near $200 once a 40/mo credit expires. Any streaming service under $100 will save me a ton.

One thing I do is keep a spreadsheet of costs of each app. I’ve been streaming about 4 years and I’m STILL about $30 cheaper a month than what I was paying on cable. I’ve saved a ton of money over the years.

My spreadsheet keeps me honest to make sure my cost isn’t getting dumb. The beauty is I’m in and out of apps monthly just to watch a show and then cancel. And I can move a tv anywhere my phone goes, since most of my tv’s also have chromecast built in.

Good to hear! I’m not worried about the cost of extra apps as I already subscribe or have free access to the ones I use. Those costs are kinda fixed for me.

Youtubetv is probably the closest thing to cable or directv
Agreed, and I've used pretty much all of these at one point or another. If you already subscribe to hulu, disney+, and espn+, then the hulu live tv bundle is the most cost effective option in my opinion. I don't think anyone who likes channel flipping will find that to be an enjoyable experience on any of the streaming services.

I already have Hulu/Disney/espn via Verizon. What I’m seeing on the Hulu site is a live tv option for $75, or to go up a buck to $76 for it to include h/d/e. Weird that they only give you savings of $1 if you don’t want or need the apps.

Plex will integrate most into a single interface, but it won't be like the channel guide you are used to. In all honesty, I would just get a great steaming device (I think the Nvidia Shield TV or TV Pro are the best) and just go from app to app.

I use Tivimate for my IPTV lists and it is the closest thing I have found to the channel guide for DirecTV, Dish or Cable providers. I bought a lifetime license for Tivimate pro and have been very happy with it.

Tivimate is a must-have for customizing IPTV.

Sure, I use Smarters for that, but it doesn't integrate the other apps into it. Just the IPTV, so I didn't mention it.

For the uninitiated......what does this do for you and how does it work? Explain it like I am 5 year old, please.

Basically lets you customize your IPTV. You can sort folders, channels inside folders, hide channels and folders, create favorites.

And this cuts across streaming services? Could I have YTTV, Netflix, Prime all on one "scroll"?

ETA: "IPTV" does this have a deeper meaning than just a term for streaming services? For example, I have YTTV, Netflix, Max, Prime. Am I using IPTV or is there some other device that "bundles" these somehow? Treat me like a 50+ yr old guy that doesn't understand technology (because I am one).

IPTV is a package of channels you subscribe to from an IPTV provider (there are a million providers out there, most are similar but offer different channel packages/groups).

I have Voodoostreams (closed to new customers) and get around 9000 channels. Most are channels in other countries I'll never watch or even try to watch, and I'm sure a large number of them don't ever work.

I get every imaginable cable channel, ABC/CBS/FOX/NBC channels from around the country, every movie channel there is, every game of every sport, every PPV, Redzone channel, porn....literally everything.

I pay $10/month in 3 month blocks, so I renew every 3 months for $30.

The drawback is that it's illegal and isn't always 100% reliable. Sometimes a channel will drop, sometimes there's buffering, and sometimes the whole service might go down for a few hours. But for $10/month, I can live with it. It's a little techie to set up, YouTube is your friend.

In simple terms, IPTV is pretty much illegal online cable TV with a million channels.

I see where streamers are trying to bundle - with comcast crooks. IMO they should bundle without comcast and offer a package through fire stick or similar. Prices for streaming are going to continue to rise as it appears new content is muy expensive

I wasn't sure if it was kosher to mention it here or not, but I used Voodoo for quite a while. I started having way too many buffering issues and crashes so I started exploring. I am currently using Appollogroup and Trendyscreen.

I haven't had many issues at all, but I know there are a few different Voodoo streams out there (mine is dot cc) Ive had it for about 2 years and it's been the most stable IPTV I've had.

Been playing around with Tivimate and can't believe I never heard if it before. Love the customization and slick UI...I'm going to try to set it up this week so I can record shows DVR style from Tivimate to my laptop since the Firestick doesn't have much storage space. I found a Troypoint video that explains how, it looks pretty simple. Will report back if all goes well.

Up until now, I've kept regular cable on top of IPTV because I like having a DVR for my usual shows. I've only been using IPTV for football games, PPVs, and movie channels, but if I can get it setup where I can record from IPTV, bye bye cable.
