What foods or resturuants make you scream GROSS!? (1 Viewer)

Oh ####. The Hat! Yes! Only had it once but it was as close as I’ll ever come to finding Jesus. The definition of underrated.
I wish they had locations on the Westside. The pastrami is ok quality but so damn good... like boiled hot dogs.

Also, I went to Popeyes earlier this month and ordered their Chicken Po-Boy.  Tasteless and bland.  Didn't really appreciate the diahreah the next day either.  I remembered Popeyes fondly from my days in the south, but it sucks up here.  Least, that sandwich sucks.
I didn't even know Popeyes sold sandwiches.

I'm a NY kid. Kosher pastrami. Katz' deli. The Full deal.

Ill have my NYer card revoked for this, but the HAT has the best tasting Pastrami sammich (the Pastrami Dip). You are totally right in that it's not exactly the best of quality but the end product is the tastiest I've ever had.

We once walked two miles each way at like midnight one time in college to go to the hat.  Pastrami Dip with chilli or gravy fries? Well worth cutting a year off your life for it.

Round Table = best chain pizza
Dude, I thought I respected you.

Arguably the worst out there. And we ate plenty during college in claremont.  I'd rather dominos or the hut. Papa Johns even if it weren't owned by a human vat of  bile.

I once planned a business trip around going to the hat.  Had to fly into Palm Springs. Instead of connecting flight, flew into LAX and rented car, drove out and stopped at The Hat in Upland (the one we went to in college).  Was SO worth it.

####, I'll be in LA next week, how much is a LYFT From downtown to El Monte or Alhambra? Maybe the one by Pasadena?

Will not eat at any of these places:

  • Wendys
  • Burger King
  • Hardees/Carls
  • Jack in the Box
  • White Castle
  • Popeyes
  • KFC
  • Subway
  • Sonic
  • Taco Bell
Will eat at these places in a pinch but prefer not to:

  • McDonalds
  • Arbys
  • Bojangles
Don't mind eating at these places but they are overrated:

  • In N Out
  • 5 Guys
  • Firehouse
Prefer eating at these places if I need to eat fast food:

  • Chick Fil A
  • Rubios
  • Jersey Mikes

Absolutely. It may be more expensive too though (worth it IMO) but just for context.
I like to think our place is exactly that (local joint with a better burger than 5G). I think ours is better in pretty much every way, but of course, it's always a matter of personal taste. For the patty itself, I see 5G lists it as 94 grams. I actually use grams to way our patties (which I do personally for every burger we sell). Our patties are all between 153 and 157 grams. 80/20 choice Angus beef. Not sure what 5G uses, but it's certainly not better. I remember 5G having tiny little patties. I didn't realize they were that much smaller.

Anyway, my point is that it's not always more expensive either. We sell our Cheeseburgers for $4.79. A double is $6.19. Haven't checked 5G prices in a while, but I think they are a fair amount higher.

Of course, I assume 5G pays about 5-6 times what I do for their building space.

I lived in NH from the mid 90's to the early 2,000's and Dunkin Donuts coffee is like crack up there. I'm not a coffee drinker but every morning they had about 20 cars in the drive thru.
Where I lived in PA there was five of them within a mile of each other on the same (busy) road. Always crowded.

i find their coffee to be okay and I believe the caffeine content is pretty high so I kinda get it.

LOOK AT ME I HAVE STANDARDS

Hard to believe somebody made a list that says they would never eat at Popeyes, but would actively seek out jersey mike's. :loco:

Don't forget all the money they spend giving away free peanuts.

And   at those who think they're actually free. Their burgers are ridiculously overpriced because they include the costs of all the peanuts they give away.

I've read where ol' Papa is a pretty heavy drinker - what makes him a human vat of bile.

Perhaps VAT is a bit much, but there's a history of homophobic remarks and a number of issues with underpaying (already underpaid) employees.

Maybe just being a selfish megadoosh would have been a better way to put it.

Next time just mention that Peyton Manning owns a bunch of Papa Johns. That's insulting enough to the brand, and needs no explanation.

OMAHA!!!!

:bag:   I eat at Subway about 2-3 times a week.  It's literally 20 yards from my front door.  Might back off once I have a kitchen in my home again.

I’ve always hated Subway - haven’t eaten there is many years.  I used to have a Blimpie’s close to my office 20 years ago and I would get their tuna sub occasionally- thought it was pretty good but I don’t remember seeing a Blimpie in 15 years - are they still in business?

They're owned by Kahala now, which seems to be a company that buys brands that grew too big. Every brand they've bought seems to shrink in number of locations after they purchase it.

I can't fathom how Burger King and Subway are still in business.

In-N-Out is the definition of overrated.  Sure, it's decent, but people rave about it like it's the best eating experience they've ever had.

Old school underrated:
Rax
Roy Rogers
I used to love Rax so much I may have gotten it pregnant.  I'll never know, it just up and left  me one day.

McDonald's is underrated. Their egg mcmuffin is top tier for fast food breakfast. Their coffee, at least in Canada is better than most coffee/donut places. Their french fries are legendary. Sure the sandwich is probably going to be subpar but none of these places make a better hamburger than I can make in my kitchen, I'm really there for fries or quick breakfast anyway and McD's is near the top.
WERE legendary

The podcast will make you :lmao:

Come to Blimpie's - enjoy a chia pet of shredded lettuce with your microslice of mystery meat!!

My sub of choice is steak & cheese.

I can not order this from an establishment that doesn't have a grill (see Subway).

I've never tried Blimpie's but the name doesn't give me the urge to eat there.

Here in Tom Brady land, we have a sub shop chain that I've yet to find better .... D'angelos Sandwich Shop. Maybe 150 restaurants around and south of Boston?

They haven't gone national (to the dismay of most Footballguys I'm sure), but if you are ever in the area, try the #9:

from Wikpedia:

Although making no claims to originality in the concept, D'Angelo's established itself as a purveyor of steak and cheese sandwiches endemic to the Northeastern United States. The "Number 9" (so named for its initial place on the menu) consists of finely chopped steak, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and melted American cheese. This is also available as a "Steak Bomb," a spicier variant with genoa salami, ham capicola and melted provolone cheese.

The bread is also amazing and I promise you will never look at Subway the same again.

We have 2 blimpies left that I know of. Was a sub staple when I was a kid. Much better IMO then subway, at least in the taste dept.  they use to have a breaded chick breast patty that was awesome, but it's been gone for some time.  I still go there every once in a while. Cant beat a good independent sub shop though. One of those places where you can barely close the bread and its soaked in oil and vinegar ......uhhhh huh!!!

But I just had a Jersey Mikes at Orlando airport and it was pretty good.

Now my guilty please is White Castle....feel free to rip that up.

Never tried D’Angelos  but I lived in New England for eight years and still believe they have the best sub shops in the country overall. Not so much the chains but the local places. If you ever get up to Hudson, NH look up Bill Cahills Super Subs. Haven’t been there in over 15 years but they still gets great reviews.

It's not just the peanuts, but when you compare local hole-in-the-wall joints and chain restaurants, folks have to realize that a huge chunk of the money they are paying at a chain is going towards advertising costs and expensive real estate, instead of food and labor costs. Food and labor costs contribute to overall quality, where as advertising and real estate do not.  The hole in the wall place may be off your beaten path and harder to find, but that just means their expenses are focused on food and labor (it also means they are probably more likely to go out of business but that's another matter). If I ever moved to another part of town, I'd leave the food the same, just charge more to cover the crazy high mortgage. Current location does limit prices, of course (I'm way cheaper than chains like 5G and Waffle House across the board but still catch flack about prices because of location).

And the labor cost factor is very important. You go to a chain and you are dealing with kids that don't give a ####. They move on, you rinse and repeat with new underpaid workers that don't give a ####. Meanwhile, I've go a staff that averages about 20 years of experience. They are preparing your order when they see the car pull up and want to know how "your mom and dem" are doing. It's a whole different ball game.

I get people asking about expanding and adding locations all the time, but I really can't imagine doing it without raising prices, along with cutting quality and wages. I've got no interest. I know I'll never get rich doing it this way, but that's fine. I'm a simple man. I just love my job and want to keep it.

Anyway, sorry for the tangent. I'm a little drunk already because I've got to get up and go to work at 5AM on my "day off" tomorrow. Point is, you find a hole in the wall that's out of the way, and it's probably really good food at a great price for a number of reasons.

Hey Pollard, would love to see an update on your restaurant thread. Hope all is well!

I like Chik-Fil-A, but agree it is way over-rated. The chicken sandwich is ok. But I mean, you get chicken and a few pickles. Pretty plain and unimpressive. So that would be my vote based on the OP.

Won't get in to the whole burger thing. It's been done to death in another thread. The fact that thread exists pretty much points to at least two highly over-rated chains.

As for chicken, is Bush's just local to Texas? Love Bush's. Best chicken hands down. Sides aren't great though. KFC has become disgusting. Literally got sick the last time we had it at my parent's house. I think they inject it with grease. Dreadful.

Thanks for starting this thread you jerks. My wife was gone all day yesterday as she was throwing a baby shower and what did I do? Get McDonalds for lunch and Taco Bell for diner. I hadn't eaten at Taco Bell in maybe 2 years. It was pretty good tho.

So how many times have you plunged the toilet today?
