What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

That's cool. It's been s couple years since I've been to Canada. It's cool to hear the craft beer scene is growing there. About 5 years ago I went and the beer store only had the basic mass produced Canadian beers and it sucked.
DON'T YOU DARE BASH RICKARD'S AND MOOSEHEAD AND ALEXANDER KEITH'S.Actually Alexander Keith's does kinds suck.
It's ridiculous they call it an IPA, as a generic lager, it's still bad but no worse than you're average Bud/Canadian/whatever.

Keith's also has a new hop series where they have a bunch of single hop beers (cascade, hallertauer, celeia, saphir), they're better than their standard IPA and they at least educate a bit about decent beer to people who normally drink Keith's. Plus my brother works for ABInBev, so I get some freebies.

My understanding is that Toronto (and GTA) beers have been getting substantially better in the past few years, but it's been probably 2 years since I've really been there for more than a few hours.

I like Tankhouse, probably my favorite of theirs. That said, I would buy any number of Michigan beers over Mill Street beers, so it probably won't stand up to Bells, Founders, Dark Horse, Shorts, etc.
The Canadian Great Lakes brewery is pretty good. I like Muskoka Brewery as well.If you're in Toronto, BarVolo is a good place to go. I'm there for a concert Tuesday night and were going to head there for a couple before.

Yeah, it's the worst "ipa" I havd ever had.

Bar Volo is solid. There is also a place Beer Bistro which may or may not still be open that had a great list as of 2-3 years ago.

Spent the afternoon at Half Acre....

Hot Tropic - Coconut Pale good not great - have a growler for home, will be a great beer for the heat I think

Navaja - DIPA - Excellent. 10% and doesn't taste like it at all. Have a growler for home as well as a few bombers

Shrub Tundra - Coffee brown ale. Similar to Surly's Coffee Bender but better. Not as weak of a body as Bender and a bit more coffee

Meat Wave - English IPA - meh, english and german malts and hops.

Vallejo - Great as usual

Akari Shogun - As others have said a very nice wheat beer

Freedom of 78 is on tap for next week and I noticed a bunch of barrels sitting the brewery and asked them about it. They are empty and will be used for a collab with 4 Hands :excited:

Great afternoon there, love that place and got to talk to a bunch of the guys who've been there a long time. Some cool info about the Tap Room (Kitchen coming soon, full on restaurant at the new brewery in a year).

Last night, I had some good stuff:

Prairie Okey imperial brown ale aged in whiskey barrels

Jolly Pumpkin La Roja Du Kriek

Almanac Farmer's Reserve Pluot

Deschutes Pinedrops IPA

Anyone have any beer recommendations for Manhattan? I will be there for a wedding this weekend, the missus is in the bridal party so she'll have to do bridesmaid things, spend half the day getting her hair done, pictures before and after the ceremony, etc. So I'm on my own for a time.

The hotel is in the Murray Hill area of Midtown Manhattan. Can anyone recommend any decent beer bars in the area? I don't want to stray too far if possible but am not averse to hopping on the train if necessary.

Have you tried Illusive Traveler?

I found it at Olde Town Tavern in Arvada. Similar to Dry Dock's Apricot Blonde, but with grapefruit. Surprisingly good beer.

I don't know names of the neighborhoods, but my favorite non-brooklyn beer spots were Ginger Man and Blind Tiger. Rattle and has a great selection, but has been way over crowded most of the times I went.

Turns out I was wrong on where the actual wedding is. It's a 15-minute walk from Blind Tiger, and there's ~2.5 hours between ceremony and reception, so I guess I know where I'll be going in that open window.

Ginger Man is a few blocks from our hotel, could be an option later in the evening Friday/Saturday. Good stuff here.

I have not, but I do enjoy grapefruit-infused beers. I'll have to give it a try sometime.

I had some really delicious beers on Sunday and Monday in Boulder:

Avery III Dolia sour ale aged in Madeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carcavelos barrels

Avery The Preacher Belgian strong ale/quad blend aged in bourbon barrels

Avery Carlos Caliente Belgian quad infused with raspberries and chipotle peppers

Powder Keg Lettre Rouge farmhouse ale brewed with citrus and hibiscus aged in Cabernet barrels with Brett

Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin

Was able to score 3 bottles of espresso oak aged yeti's at a small store today. I'm sending you 1 wing as I know you deep down are a fan...

3 way trade. I will send you a bottle of Penzoil and the next Short's IPA for the Oak Aged Espresso Stout.
ok, so where am I sending this thing now. I have a 6 pack of grapefruit sculpin that needs to go too. that stuff is nasty. :)

I will gladly trade some Michigan beers for either.

hi 80's,

will gladly ship you off the grapefruit sculpin. I will not gladly ship you an espresso yeti, but will part with 1 if you really want 1. :)

in your opinion, does MI have any stouts comparable to yeti? I do not like the bourbon aged stuff, but sure michigan has some great stuff.

^ I worked on Mackinac Island for a summer back in 89. My sister actually lived there from about 92-2004. Very cool place.

Having a pretty crappy day, so far tonight Ive had a CCB Invasion Pale Ale, a Sixpoint Bengali IPA, and a Resin DIPA, and am trying to decide my next beer.

Looks like I'm going back to the fridge for a Mackinac Island Fudge Stout
How is it? I haven't had it in a few years, but I remeber being very disappointed.
It's ok...very chocolaty
Very chocolatey is good. It is a fudge stout. Founders has a brewery only Donky Fudge Stout and its unreal.
A local brewery, Angry Chair, has an a stout called Fudge Bucket...havent had a chance to try it but Ive heard its the imperial version of their German Chocolate Cupcake Stout, which is awesome.

My god, I want to make love to that beer.

Yeah, I may head over there this weekend, hopefully before it kicks...I must try it.

Another jaw-dropping beer by Trillium - Galaxy dry hopped Fort Point Pale Ale. Tell me you've seen a juicier looking beer.

http://i.imgur.com/gy6D73N.jpg

And the juiciness lives up to how it looks. Insane.
I love you, but I mostly hate you.
lol...Im tellin ya...trade for any Trillium hops you can get your hands on, especially the dry/double dry hopped stuff. Its life changing. The Double Dry Hopped Fort Point might be the best hoppy beer Ive ever had (including all APAs, IPA, and DIPAs Ive had)...and at 6.6% ABV, its stronger than Crank, which makes it feel like an IPA to me.

Point me in the direction.

Boston. Only available at the brewery. Facebook trading groups are a possibility, I got mine from a trade on BA, but I had some Cycle Rare DOS (barrel aged stout) to trade...its not easy to land Trillium, but it can be done...I tried for about 6 months before I got a deal.

The limited Trillium stuff I've had, mostly at the TBS get-together last May in Connecticut, was all top notch stuff. I don't trade, but if I did trade, I would recommend the brewery. That is, if you can get a hold of it.

Nice. I will likely pick up a bunch if I can find them for our trip to South Carolina. Going to HA tomorrow to get Freedom of 78.
I would just drink local during your trip. Save the NvU for your return.

Does Half Acre fill growlers from the tap room after the store closes? Ie Navaja and 78?

It's a trek for me to get up there and won't likely make it by 8 tonight. I guess I could try tmw

Finally got to stock up on 2 cases of Zombie Dust (7/15) again after going without for about a month. Amazingly the line was only about 10 deep when I swung through at lunch time expecting to drive past.

And now today they bottle Alpha Kong for the first time in years... had to get a case of that for the cellar. Hopefully the wife misses the $200 in two days on beer LOL.
