What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (3 Viewers)

Joe Daddy Coffee Stout....so-so.

Anyone have a favorite coffee beer?

I did like the Goose Island Fulton St.....first non-porter/stout that I've had that has a nice coffee taste.
great divide oak aged espresso yeti stout. I sound like a broken record but I love their stuff. also like ballast point victory at sea porter. I'd say they are my 2 favorite beers.

Thanks, I haven't had this before; I'll have to check out Binny's next weekend!

Have you tried maxwell house? I hear Ken makes a mean brew.
That's the best you got? Not even close to funny, but i appreciate the lack of effort.
No, I'm not very "funny"...I will, however, suggest you just ####### drink SOMETHING.

Buckfast, you going to GABF? I'm flying on the Wednesday before and out Sunday.
Yeah, I will be definitely be there. I'm not sure which sessions yet, but I am hoping to get tickets for Thursday night and Saturday afternoon next week. I'm really excited to come by your booth. If you are getting in early enough on Wednesday and don't have any plans/obligations, you should get a ticket to go to the What the Funk festival on Wednesday night. It is an awesome festival hosted by Crooked Stave with an elite selection of rare sour and barrel-aged beers. I already got a VIP ticket. Here is the link to buy tickets if you are interested:

There is so much good stuff going on in Denver during GABF week. Let me know if you want to meet up and hit any events that week.
I just booked everything. Land at 140 Wednesday. Need to set thing up then I'll be looking for something to do. That fest looks awesome, but might be a bit much for me. Might be on a tight budget. Staying at downtown Sheraton. Looks like the fest starts at 530 everyday, so I guess I'll be free most days. I'll want to hit as many breweries as possible. How's public transportation over there? Is it useable for brewery visits and beer bars at all? I know Crooked Stave is a must stop for me. Nothing else on that list. Never been to Denver, so I'm pretty excited.

Some others from yesterday:

Three Floyds Panther Transformation - red ipa with sea salt

Mango sculpin

Tribal hero - collaboration between Revolution and Tribes Beer, nothing too exciting. Ipa with Amarillo and galaxy

Bells Wildberry Rye barrel aged fruit beer

4 Hands/Wicked Weed Super Flare Brett ipa with mango, guava and mosaic and galaxy hops

KBS

Lagunitas High Westified

Stone Wicked Weed iipa - aged in tequila barrels. 75% iipa 25% Belgian triple

Pipeworks disappointed me. Brought NvU and blood of the unicorn. Meh.

Now....Vallejo

Oh yeah. Half Acre Tuna Grande. Double pale ale version of their Golden Tuna pale session ale

This one was really good

First "beer festival" and it was relatively small and tame. Want to do Great Taste of the Midwest now. Maybe next year

I was all set to book a trip for the Great Taste but issues came up that prevented it. I'll be there next year 100%.

Nice. I'm at the office working right now (terrible), but I'll give you a full rundown of my Denver beer recommendations when I get a chance tomorrow or Tuesday.

Cool. I am going to try to do it.

I am looking at the list of things I didn't try and I wish I could go back and sample those....

This whole series is tops in my book right now.

spotted puffer

crimson snapper

square grouper

####### amazing beers.

Yesterday, I drove 45 minutes to Boulder to meet up with a self-proclaimed "beer addict" in the parking lot of a grocery store at 10:00 a.m. to illegally purchase three Avery barrel-aged vintage sour beers for $100. My own "beer addiction" may have reached new levels yesterday.

However, I'm really looking forward to drinking my Avery Opuntia sour ale aged in tequila barrels with prickly pears, Avery Thensaurum sour ale aged in rum barrels, and Avery Oud Floris sour brown ale aged in Cabernet Sauvignon, bourbon, rum, and Chardonnay barrels.

$100 each or $100 total?

Total. Still pretty steep, but I've been trying to track down a bottle of Opuntia for awhile and figured it would be easy to just pony up the cash in person. Some guy was trying to liquidate his Avery cellar.

GABF Week is great because there are all kinds of different beer events/tap takeovers/special tappings going on at different brewpubs and breweries during the week. Most of the stuff hasn't been announced yet, but I will keep you updated on cool events that are going on around town as we get closer to the festival.

Denver has decent public transportation, but I'm not sure that you will need to use it all that much to get to events around town. A lot of the best brewpubs and breweries are concentrated around downtown and within walking distance/short cab ride from of your hotel. I would highly recommend using Lyft or Uber to get around Denver. You can even rent bicycles from a public bike share system to get around to a lot of the breweries.

Here are some of my recommendations of places to try to hit during the week:

Brewpubs

Falling Rock Tap House - This place is renowned as one of the best beer bars in the country and a must hit. A lot of the brewery owners and brewers will be hanging out here during the festival. They will be doing special tappings all week long of rare, amazing beers.

Freshcraft - This is another one of my favorite brewpubs in Denver. They will be doing special tappings and tap takeovers during GABF.

Star Bar - Cool dive bar with great craft beer selection. They always do special tap takeovers and bottle release events during GABF.

B-Side - Sister restaurant of Star Bar with a great beer selection and delicious fried chicken. Like Star Bar, they will be doing special tappings during GABF week.

Hops & Pie - Great beer selection with special events and really good food. The downside is that it is not located very close to downtown and it is usually really busy, especially during GABF week, although it should be less busy during the day.

Vine Street - Delicious food and great beer that is brewed in-house.

Breweries

Crooked Stave - Crooked Stave is definitley a must hit. The Source is a cool venue for a brewery and the restaurants inside (Acorn and Comida) are both really delicious.

Great Divide - They expect to open their new state-of-the-art brewing facility by GABF week. Their new brewery is located right by Crooked Stave, so you could hit both in one trip to the River North neighborhood.

Comrade - Comrade's Superpower IPA is the best Colorado-brewed IPA in my opinion. Comrade is located a decent way from downtown, but I think it is worth the commute. I could probably give you a ride over there on Friday afternoon if you are interested.

River North - They have lots of interesting Belgian-style barrel-aged beers and are located downtown by Coors Field.

Station 26 - Station 26 is my neighborhood brewery which is located in a converted firehouse. I think Station 26 and Comrade probably make the best Denver-brewed IPAs.

Ratio Beerworks - They are a relatively new brewery that has been putting out really solid beer since it opened and has a great newly-renovated outdoor space.

Beryl's - They are a relatively new brewery with emphasis on barrel-aged beers. They are located right by Ratio, Epic, and River North, which would make an easy walking brewery tour near downtown.

Black Shirt - They brew all of their beers with a red base, but surprisingly they manage to keep it pretty interesting. One of my favorite beers from GABF last year was their sour red saison aged in pinot noir and whiskey barrels. They are located relatively close to Crooked Stave and the new Great Divide brewery.

TRVE - Heavy metal-themed brewery on Broadway that makes some fantastic sours. I expect they will likely do some sort of special sour release during GABF.

Former Future - Another brewery on Broadway that makes some incredible spontaneous wild ales, although their wild ale production is so limited that I'm not sure if they will have any available during GABF. Their beers are generally very solid.

Copper Kettle - Another good brewery that is a decent way from downtown, but which isn't far from Comrade if you make the trip over to the east side of town.

I'll keep you posted on cools events around town when they are announced. Let me know if you have any questions about anything. I'd love to meet up for some beers when you are in town. Congrats on your first GABF experience with the brewery!

Awesome and Congrats! I'll be at all four shifts as an Island Captain. GABF is a fantastic experience every year. And this year there should be A LOT more space as GABF is going to have 20% more of the Convention Center space than last year.

Work with your Island Captains so that you can get time on the floor to roam around. I don't know how other teams work but we like to at least have an idea of when brewers are going to be at their space and when they want to enjoy the festival. NOTE: If you are not at your brewery at the start of each session, we have been instructed not to pour your beer. This is not a hard and fast rule on our island but, again, I don't know how other teams work.

Good info, Aristocrat. We will have good representation there. 4 of us going. Should always have a couple at the booth. We like to interact with the customers. Sounds like you guys do all the actual pouring? Seems like it is different at every festival.

Do you know when the floor map gets released?

The brewery reps will pour beer at some of the stations whereas, at others, they just leave it to the volunteers to pour. I always think it is great when the brewery reps are standing around the booth and eager to chat with the GABF attendees. I just think it leaves a memorable impression of the brewery for people when you get a chance to talk to the brewers/owners about the beer they are pouring. That said, make sure you plan on getting out from behind the booth and experiencing the festival for yourself. Towards the latter part of the session, it is rare that any of the brewers/owners are still hanging about their booth.

They generally release the floor map to the public a few days before the festival. I'm not sure if the breweries/volunteers get it sooner than that or not. The GABF IPhone app is pretty cool, as you can select breweries that you want to hit and it helps you make a game plan for the festival. After the beer list is released, I always come up with a pretty detailed plan of which breweries/regions I want to hit first to get a pour of the beers that I know will kick earliest in the festival.

I've seen the generic floor map but not one with specific regions on it yet. We usually see that in September at the final Captain's meeting.

Pouring can be done by your brewery reps or by our volunteers. Just another thing that you manage with your Captain team. Some big breweries like to pour for all sessions and don't want volunteer help. Some like to use our volunteers so that they can interact with patrons. It's a play-it-by-ear type deal with our team. We don't mind, just let us know if you are going to take a walk so that we can get volunteers to where they need to be.

i'm in austin, tx for a few days, what beers should I be looking for? please don't say shiner bock.
Jester King!
Yeah, Jester King is what I would recommend as well. Over this past weekend, they just released their Atrial Rubicite sour ale with raspberries, which is one of the most sought-after sour beers in the country. I don't think you will find any bottles around town and I'm not sure if it even gets put on tap anywhere outside of the brewery, but if you were to come across any, it would be a glorious find.

Austin Beerworks, Live Oak, and (512) Brewing are all supposed to be pretty good breweries in Austin as well. Austin Beerworks' IPAs seem to get really good reviews on the beer rating websites. I had a few of their beers recently at Oskar Blues' Burning Can festival, and I recall being impressed with what I had.

GABF Thursday! WOOT
Nice! I got GABF tickets for Thursday as well. I love the Thursday night session, as there is just a great excitement in the air, none of the beers have kicked yet, and the crowd is filled mostly with true beer gurus that willingly sacrifice work on Friday to attend opening night of GABF.

Can't wait!

My previous two GABFs were on the Saturday eve session - which I saw many unavailable beers. Oh well.

Cheers!

Some breweries hold back some special beers until Friday so they know they won't run out for the Sat afternoon session. Not all that frequent but its the only downside to Thursday.

Picked up some Austin Beerworks and some other stuff, but haven't seen any Jester King and have been to 3 different stores so far. thanks for all the recs.

Finally made it to revolution tasting hq on Milwaukee ave. had hefe Rojo - hefeweizen with more malt / caramel. Good stuff! Have to get back there when I'm not driving.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company - The Kimmie, The Yink & The Holy Gose. Never had the style before so the flavor hit me completely unexpected. Very good after a few sips. Great summer beer.
